NAS to NAS (and online) backup question

Hi,

I'm a noob to NAS storage, but i hope that I can get an answer to my question anyway.

My plan is to buy a DNS-320L and persuade a friend of mine to buy one as well. Then setup my NAS to backup to his and vice versa, thus securing offsite backup. My question is if it is possible for my friend to access my files via the backup "file" on his NAS?

Would a 2 disk configuration help in any way to secure that there is no access to the backup file on the remote NAS (one disk for local backup and one disk for remote backup)?

Also I'm considering Symform on-line backup, but their website only lists QNAP, Synology and NETGEAR integration. Is there an integration on the way for the DNS-320L or is there a way to setup automated on-line backup using this provider?

Hi,
I don't have a 320L but I have several 320's and 325's.  I tried to figure out a similar issue but quickly discovered some major problems.  The main one as I recall is that everybody I know has a Dynamic IP, meaning you or the other end will periodically get a new IP address.  Since the backup software requires a numeric IP address, xxx.xxx.xx.123, you will have to regularly monitor your actual IP address.  This pretty much stopped me because it's hardly automatic.  Also, there is no way I can think of that would not give access to any of your files on the remote NAS, and the same on the other end.  So if I understood you correctly, I don't think there is any automatic way to do what you want to.  If security on both ends is not an issue and "automatic" is not a necessity, you both could just set up your ftp server with DDNS accounts and do a manual backup but speed could be a problem if you are moving a lot of data.  Just my thoughts.  Good luck.

NAS DNS-320L is networked computer like any other networked computer. If you want to exchange data between them you have to establish some kind of connection between them (e.g. FTP) and setup some synchronization mechanism.

DNS-320L has one tool called Remote Backup where one can setup regular exchange (download) of some data from remote (source) computer. In Remote Backup you can setup e.g. that your NAS every night downloads some data from defined source. In order to be able to reach this remote data source (other NAS), it must have or fixed IP addres (rare case) or Dynamic DNS name. 320L supports dynamic DNS (or you can setup it in your router).

I would recommend looking into CrashPlan (http://www.crashplan.com/consumer/crashplan.html). It's free if you're backing up between two remote computers or you can pay for a cloud account also the data is encrypted so neither you or your friend can access each others data. I've been using it backing up my home laptop to my work laptop in the office for well over a year now and it's been superb.

However, I've been using it with a directly connected USB drive so not sure if it'll work between 320Ls...
