Fried Ethernet Ports
« on: December 28, 2015, 08:49:40 PM »

I've had quite a few problems with this router over the years that weren't really enough for me to replace the unit until now.  The first problem I had is similar to problems others have discussed where wired devices would be booted off of the network for no reason - internet would return and die off intermittently until the unit was reset.  I could live with this despite it happening on a weekly basis, I would just log into the admin panel and do a soft reset.

Today, just now, I've found my DIR-825 ports have been fried completely, wireless connectivity works perfectly, but all ethernet ports aren't usable, meaning I can't connect to my modem, nor can my wired LAN devices see each other (or the unit).  I confirmed this by bypassing the router to confirm the internet would work, then bypass the wired connection on the router by using wifi, which worked flawlessly.

I've reverted back to an older router for the time being: DIR-628 (Firmware Version: 1.00 Hardware Version: A2), I was given this by someone who upgraded to an Apple router, and hasn't had a single problem.

What should I do now?  Are Apple routers the way to go?  Can I get a replacement from D-Link?

I'll have to check on a lot of this when I get back home, but honestly I highly doubt it will matter - the board can't receive pings when wired, WAN/LAN ports aren't responsive, all lights are lit up on the 4 LAN ports with nothing plugged in.  My last resort would be to update the firmware, I know it's overdue, but I believe it's an electrical issue/damaged board.

Do you know if RMAs are possible?

If your not getting any pings back from the router then the router is dead. These model routers are pretty much EOL and I don't think RMA covers anymore than a year depending on how it was under warranty.

I had seen issues with the 835 and DAP-1535 as they had heat issues. I still have mine and need to get one more metal heat sink in mine for complete modification of the router. D-Link used these composite heat sink chips which IMO was a bad design and lead to failure of these units. There are a couple of threads in the DIR-857 and DAP-1525 boards mentioning mod's for the heat sink problem in various model routers. I brought this up to D-Link and future model routers seem to have moved to better metal heat sink in there designs. The only down fall of these models was the heat sink design I believe.

You can try asking for an RMA from D-Link however it maybe out of warranty at this time.

I recommend looking for either a newer model router: i can help with a suggestion if you need or look for something here:

If your not getting any pings back from the router then the router is dead.

LAN/WAN pings fail, WiFi pings work.  I agree it's probably heat-related as this was BY FAR the most amount of throughput I gave it.  Multiple LAN file transfers kept it hot for about 60 minutes sustained, our down rate was probably maxed with HD streaming and pulling down software for a new computer.

Sounds like they didn't stress test the units enough - probably works great for most folks!

I don't have time for router modding, or even refreshing the thermal paste, I just expect it to work out of the box, set it and forget it.  Not sure how to even buy another router after this, but if D-Link is plagued by heat issues.. I think it's time to look elsewhere.

I'll do a quick scan of the current models that fit our needs to see if they have any latent heat issues, before checking out other brands.

Thanks for all the help!

The only model routers I've tested that had some heat issues was the DIR-835, 827, 857 and DAP-1533. All newer products since then are good to go.

Let us know what you end up getting.
