Connection Problems
« on: December 02, 2012, 10:09:12 AM »

I'm having persistent problems with what appears to be connection interruptions for streaming or long term connections.

The symptom is that certain applications lose their connection frequently. This occurs on multiple devices, so is not tied to a particular piece of hardware or software. In most cases the device wireless connection is fine and other applications may still continue to function.

Some examples:
  • Internet Radio - Streaming sessions "end" and reconnects to the same station fail. Reset of router temporarily fixes the problem
  • PS3 - Losing connections frequently during some online games, especially Fifa12/13. Doesn't appear immediately when a game starts, but after 30 minutes or so the game gets interrupted due to lost connection. The connection to the wireless AP is maintained at all times.
  • iPad - Some online games lose their connection, but other apps can be used at the same time. Once again, Fifa13 shows this symptom the most.

Regular web browsing doesn't seem affected, although I do find I need to reset the router from time to time (once a week or so) because Internet connectivity stops, even though you can connect to the wireless network. This is much less of a problem than the streaming/gaming issue, which occurs daily.

I'm thinking it is some kind of TCP/UDP timeout issue since it is specific to the application and doesn't affect other activities on the device.

My setup details:

Firmware v1.01, Hardware Version A1

Canada - Rogers Cable
Scientific Atlanta Cable Modem - Model DPC2100R2
Modem is bridged

Wireless Settings:
Wireless Mixed G/N
Channel width 20Mhz only
Security -  WPA2-AES/TKIP

No other SSIDs interfering

Short GI, WLAN Partition - Turned Offf

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

I would check the router logs during this time frame that you notice the disconnect to see if there is any problems seen or loss of connection to the ISP modem. Do you still access to the routers web page during this time frame?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
