Problems with HDD writing, horrible hangups, locking up
« on: March 19, 2011, 02:55:24 PM »

Hi, this forum is my last hope, I was not able to find solution for my problem and hope some of you here can help.

CONFIGURATION: DNS-323, RAID 1 (mirror), 2 x Seagate 1.5Tb (7200.11 ST31500341A), firmware 1.08.

PROBLEM: booted NAS in the morning, tried to transfer some files (2 to 10Mb in size, around 50) from my local disk to NAS and result was that transfer started and after 2Mb stopped, then started after few mins, managed to transfer few more Mbs than basically hanged etc.

Was thinking that files are somehow bad but no, all works well on my local disk. Was trying to copy files from Total Commander, Windows Explorer, even used winrar (made archive with all files on local drive then tried to unrar them to NAS), nothing helped.

Tried to move other "small" files (again from 1Mb to 10Mb), same issue, whenever NAS is writing on HDDs. Tried big archives 400Mb and 1000Mb, that worked OK (20Mb/sec, write/read). So basically I cannot use NAS anymore for usual work because smaller files cannot be transferred.

Tried factory reset, complete setup from zero, even tried to upgrade firmware to 1.09 (NAS showed update is done but it's still 1.08, that's another problem I had from beginning but managed to update it to 1.08 so it's good atm).

I still can read all files and copy them back to local disk so it seems reading is working well, HDDs are 2 months old. Please if someone have some idea HELP!!!

(I am not native speaker so if something is not clear enough ask, I'll try to explain)

Thanks in advance

I'd run the SMART utilities on the drives to see if they are throwing errors. You could also use SeaTools disagnostics on them, but checking the SMART logs first would be easier. Sounds like a disk issue to me and nothing really to do with the NAS itself.

You may also want to check if there is a firmware update for those drives.

FYI - "Green" drives have a significant failure rate. The first one I bought was dead right from the start.

@ dosborne: I did run SeaTools and HDTune Pro (HDDs tested in Chieftec BlackBox SATA external box), both HDDs seems to be OK, only issue that HDTune Pro found was "(0A)Spin Retry Count" warning on both drives. But as I did check on internet it seems that is common for HDTune Pro to show that warning even with new unused disks.

I tried to move/copy/unpack files locally when HDDs were in BlackBox HDD Enclosure and everything worked perfect, no delays, no issues. As soon as I returned disks to NAS problems returned.

@ McPillager: yes Jumbo frames were on, and everything was working flawlessly for two months. Today I turned off Jumbo frames on both NAS and network card, nothing changed, I felt it is even more laggy now.

I am out of ideas, spent 4 hrs today testing. Short of buying new NAS I cannot see any other option atm :(

How would one go about running a SMART utility on drives that are in a NAS? I only run windows at home, do not want to funplug my boxes, but I want to update the firmware of my drives and I want to run SMART just once.

but of course. turn it back on since  your nic supports it. otherwise it could have caused trouble.

btw, are your drives compatible with the nas?

You can insert your drives into an enclosure or install them in your Windows system to update and/or run the SMART utilities.

Ok, solved problem but feel like idiot or more like someone is making full from me.

Whole issue was Avast AntiVirus that I am using for years and never had a bit of problem. Three days ago somehow for some strange reason I cannot comprehend Avast started to impact file transfer over network and only on Win7 machines, XP machines are working flawlessly.

The last thing I had in my mind but in desperation after reading some "horror" stories similar to mine I tried to disable Avast and it worked. So I narrowed problem to File System Shield where I had to setup exclusion for my NAS (files not to be checked when writing on NAS). It's not a big deal because all these files are checked before anyway.

But the most annoying thing is that neither Windows or Avast were updated or changed in any way before problem arisen (at least what can be seen in logs). So if anyone ever have similar problem check your AntiVirus software even if it was working flawlessly for years before that.

Atm all seems to be working well, I hope it stays that way.

I'm a little apprehensive of removing my drives because I don't want to break my JBOD setup. Besides, I'm pretty sure I cannot do firmware updates to Seagate drives if they're in an enclosure, and I'm currently running only one laptop and several desktops that only have 1 sata connector each.

I am really curios to see how much longer my JBOD will last (it is, after all, only a matter of time before one drive fails).
