655 dropping connection on LAN and WAN
« on: February 11, 2009, 02:11:15 AM »

I just bought the Dir-655 router (revision 4) a couple of days ago and set it up yesterday. Everything was set to basic and I upgraded to firmware 1.21EU. I have my PC connected through LAN and my wifes laptop is on wi-fi.

I have a 25Mb/25Mb fiber connection that has been running flawlessly connected directly to my PC earlier.

But with the router on I lose connection to the internet on both computers very frequently (every 5-10 minutes) and then it reconnects.

At first I thought it was related to load, since I tried to test a torrent application to push some data and connections through, and the drop off happened almost immediately after running maybe 2 mins with maybe 8-10 connections established. But today my wife reports the same drop offs with just her laptop on and with just a browser open.

Do I look at a potential hardware problem here (bad power supply or similar), or are there some settings I should try to change from default to get it running?

Thanks in advance!

Mine does the same thing (REV. A2) and has been exhibiting this behavior for months.   There are periods when it's fine for days or even weeks,
then it goes nuts (like right now), dropping the connection to the internet and re-establishing it every few minutes.

It sucks.

Nixudos, i got almost the same setup as you. My PC is connected, with a DGE-528T network card, through LAN and i have a DSM-520 media player a netbook and a windows mobile connected through Wi-Fi.
The router is a A3, an i am yousing the firmware yours were shipped with 1.20EU.
Right now i am on DHCP (10/1 Mb), and my system funktions perfect. I use PlayOn and WMP 11 as media servers playing wirelessly to my HDTV through the DSM-520.
You should proberbly have stuck with 1.20EU insteadt of upgrading to 1.21EU, did you try 1.20EU before you upgraded ?, otherwise you could try downgrading.
I am waiting for the official 1.22 to arrive.
On monday i get a 25/25 Mb fiber connection, so will see if the change to PPPoE from DHCP change any thing.

Do you guys have 2.4ghz cordless phones?

I used to have 2.4ghz phones and they would always cause my old netgear router to reset.  It was like the router didnt know what to do with the interference the phones created so it would just restart.

I upgraded my phones to 5.8 a while ago and have not had any issues with any other 2.4ghz devices including my dir-655.

I tried to disable uPnP and it doesn't help much....

If I disable wireless it seems more solid, but the main reason I got a router in the first place was to have wireless connection so it's not a viable solution.

I have my fireless set on a fixed channel, conservative settings on spped, and g only, fixed 20 mHz and it still doesn't work.

Anyone have a real good solution to get wireless running on wireless as well?

I have decided to return the router since it is impossible for me to get a just reasonable stable connection whenever wireless is on.

I tried all the suggestions presented on this forum, and just about every firmware that works with revision A4 but will now throw in the towel. I'm really sad about it though, because on paper the router sounds like just the thing I need.

I just hope that the shop will agree that a router that resets every 2-8 minutes with wireless on is a defective router  :-\

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions from all of you guys here!  And I hope you will have better luck than me to get past your problems  :)

I'm thinking about the same... returning it...  it seems like a lot of the DIR-655 with v1.2x have similar issues...  probably going to get a Trendnet instead...
