Red cross on one of my hard drive
« on: February 04, 2017, 02:42:59 AM »

Hello,
I need help because I just notice a strange thing on my DNS-320 administration interface.
In "System Status > Hard Drive Info" on one of my Hitachi HDD I saw a red cross in "Status" column.
When I click on red cross I have big value but I don't know if my HDD is dying or... something else...
Could you help me ?
Many thanx.

The critical SMART IDs are 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10.

From what you show it could be ID 7 that is the problem.

Now, assuming you have a RAID 1 array, I would advise you to power down the unit, take out the relevant drive, put it in a USB/SATA caddy or adapter and run the Hitachi disk tools to test the drive and run a full SMART test.  This will determine the state of the disk and if you should replace it.

If it passes all the disk tools tests you can replace it in the NAS and power it on again.  Hopefully this will clear the problem but you should keep an eye on that drive for a couple of months.

Thank you for your answer !
So I downloaded the hitachi's software and ran un an extended test. Results :
- ReadErrorCheck : PASS  :D
- SmartSelfTest : PASS - Test completed without Error  ;D
- Surface Test : FAILED  >:(
Can I repair it (with a kind of checkdisk or something else ?) or is it the beginning of the end ?

Sorry but when you get that result it is the beginning of the end for that drive - it needs replacing.

Make sure your backup is good and up to date then replace the drive.

If it is setup as a RAID 1 array then the only real consideration is the drive capacity, in your case 2TB.  Anything smaller will mess up the array and possibly lose data.
