DIR-657 / SharePort Plus doesn't detect my Seagate 3gb
« on: June 12, 2012, 05:58:43 AM »

Hey guys!
I just bought a DIR-657 and I'm happy with it.
The only problem I have is that the router (or SharePort Plus software) will not recognize my external hard drive.
I appreciate your help.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What version of SP are you using?
Theres been some issues working with 3Tb drives on these routers as some are just not working right. I have a 2Tb WD My Book and it works on my 857. I've got my 657 online now and will try it when I get home. I use SP v4.00 and Windows 7x64 and Mac OSX.

I noticed my WD My Book would not be recognized by v1.00 so I updated to v1.01. After the update and one more factory reset SP finally saw the 2Tb drive:

However after loading my saved configuration file, it didn't however I presume there could be something wrong in my configuration on that file. I'll blow away the configuration once more and configure from scratch.

I'm seeing constant LAN activity on my switch after loading my saved configuration file when there shouldn't be.  ???

Try doing a factory reset of the router with the external drive connected and SP running and after it comes to ready look at SP and see if it picks up your drive.

You might want to just put the External drive on a PC that you can leave running or at least set to wake when the drive is accessed. I have 3 externals attached to my server and shared out via windows. Works well that way. Good luck.

Hi!
I have the same problem with a 640GB USB external disk. I have uploaded the latest software and firmware and now can see the disk in Shareport, and also have it as mapped drive in my Windows Explorer.
I want to use the external disk for media storage, but it seems that the media server does not handle the content of the disk as available media. The disk is connected to the router through the USB port.

I have to say that there is no problem to share any media stored in a SD card, it works perfect with all other network devices; so I think that the media server works ok and there is some problem with the configuration of the router.

What do you suggest?

Have you formatted the drive for FAT32 or NTFS using windows? The drive needs to be cleanly formatted and removing any drive Mfrs formatting system and locks.

I would also install v4 Shareport version found on the DIR-835 site as well.

Hi!

- Hardware: V A1
- Firmware: V1.01 (initialy was 1.00 but was upgraded recently)
- No formatting at all, just plugged and played. I started installing the disk in my laptop (Windows Vista), copied content into it and plugged in the USB port of my DIR 657. Is there any special formatting required?

- Regipn:Germany

I will try the v4 Shareport and will let you know more results

Thanks for your time!

NTFS is preferred by these routers however FAT32 is ok too and seems to have better performance over NTFS. I might try both and see what fits and works best for you.

Hi again!

I formatted the unit as NTFS and installed Shareport V4 and it works better now: accessing the disk over the network is much faster than before and I can see the unit as a media storage device (on my TV and on the internet radio), but still cannot share any media stored in disk. I mean, I can navigate the disk on the radio and on the TV, but cannot play media (I can play the media files when the same disk connected via USB to the TV, so there is no compatibility problem with the files)
Any suggestion?

Thanks

Any write or read access restrictions on the folders or files your trying to share out?

Nop, all users have full access and there are no folders or files reado-only.

Suggestions?

At this point I would contact your regional DLink support office and get some help on this. I only see that Media Server needs to be enabled. However there are no other additional server settings for this router so I presume that once it's enabled, any and all media should be shared and available. Seems like were almost there, just something isn't right. Let us know what they say. I would talk to Level 2 support if you can get a hold of someone there.
