2.5" HDD from Laptop Into NAS

hi!

pardon this post if a little bit of stupidity comes with it.  But with the increasing price of new HDD these days, I can't help but wonder if I can use my old 2.5" HDD from laptop into the NAS.

If you've also tried it before, how did you go about with it? :)

Hi,
Assuming your laptop drive has the standard sata connectors, the only problem I would anticipate would be mounting the drive securely as there would be nothing to keep it from flopping around and coming loose.  A couple bits o***ood grade of electrical tape perhaps.  I would be very careful though as a loose hd moving around in there could destroy both.  Good luck

TS, using 2.5" HDD will work but take note when moving the NAS as there is nothing holding the drive to the cage, basically it's sitting on the sata connector. I know because that was how I get started with this NAS before upgrading to 2TB 3.5" drive.

I'm not 100% sure, but that case looks like it has the same dimensions and profile as a 3.5" HDD and is designed to accommodate a 2.5" drive and can slide into standard HDD slots.

Again, I'm not 100% sure. . . so you'll have to investigate further.

I'm also not entirely sure if it would work, you have to do some measurement as I remember there are rail-guide on the side of the cage. But since your objective is to save cost, simply installing your 2.5" drive will suffice.

tried slotting the bare 2.5" and it worked, looked stable inside the 320 with the sata pins holding it

As a test I fitted a 2.5" drive with some spacer rails used to allow the mounting of floppy drives in CD cages.  Said rails gave the drive the same profile as a standard HD drive and fitted in a spare 320 case we have.

It should also be possible to fit plastic spacers to hold the drive in place securely.
