Installing in pci-e x4 or x8 slot ok?
« on: August 01, 2010, 09:59:27 AM »

I know the description for the card says it's compatible with an x1, x4, x8, or x16 pci-e slot. But what will the downfall be of using a slot with lower lanes for a wireless card? Does that impact performance any?

My mobo only has 1 x16 slot which is used by my Radeon 5850 HD. Unfortunately, the card covers the x1 slot, and if I put the DWA-556 in the x8 slot below the card, my video card fan is blocked. This only leaves me with an open x4 or x8.

Will I still be able to get a full signal and transfer speed out of these?

Regardless of what slot the card's in, it can only use the lanes equivalent to a x1 slot because of its physical connector only being the size of a x1 slot.

I personally have a 3-way SLI motherboard and use my DWA-556 in one of the x16 slots without issue (well... sort of  ::)). Likewise, you shouldn't have any problems with it in x4 or x8 slots.
