Hello!
I just bought the DIR-655 last week, hooked it up, and have been using it ever since.
This new router seems slower than my old one.
There is problems loading any type of streaming video, contant disconnect to World of Warcraft (my son) and when surfing "Network Timeout" messages are common.
Have I set something up wrong??

Not sure, but let's start from the basics. 

1. Unplug power to the broadband modem and the DIR-655. Make sure all of the other connections to the router and modem are solid.
2. Restore power to the broadband modem first.  Wait for 60 seconds.
3. Restore power to the DIR-655.  Wait for 30 seconds.

If the above helps, the router and the modem were possibly not in very good sync before the procedure. The above procedure helps the devices make a synchronized data connection.  This procedure does "solve" a lot of out-of-the-box problems, but it is not a procedure that you should expect to have to do very often.

Played around a bit on the net, and I'm still getting "Network Timeout" messages.

You might want to
-disable SPI (Advanced->firewall settings),
-set your WAN connection to 100 Mbit instead of Auto (Advanced->Advanced network),
-Set UDP and TCP Endpoint filtering to "Endpoint independent" (Advanced->firewall settings)
-change the wireless channel (Setup->wireless manual)
-Ensure that Multicast streams are allowed (Advanced->Advanced network)
-APPLICATION LEVEL GATEWAY (ALG) CONFIGURATION has all items checked (Advanced->firewall settings)

None of the settings are dangerous for your router/connection.

I have 2 wired PCs and 2 wireless laptops.

I tried all of EddieZ suggestions but I'm still having issues.

One thing (that used to work fine) is a website my son used to watch videos on (thottbot.com) - since hooking up this router, they videos only play for a few seconds - buffer for a while - play for a few seconds - buffer.  They used to play fine.

That issue will save your son from an WoW addiction

Is it a laptop issue or a wired PC issue? (my bet's on the laptop...)
You might want to check the connection settings on the wireless NIC.
