Title: Chromecast and Google Home Issues
Post by: kpucci on January 16, 2018, 10:35:21 AM
This is interesting to me as I have both Chromecasts and Google Home devices on my network.

https://gizmodo.com/your-chromecast-or-google-home-might-be-screwing-up-you-1822112926?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_twitter&utm_source=gizmodo_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow&__twitter_impression=true (https://gizmodo.com/your-chromecast-or-google-home-might-be-screwing-up-you-1822112926?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_twitter&utm_source=gizmodo_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow&__twitter_impression=true)

I use the DIR-880L along with a DAP-1620 Extender.

I have approximately 35 devices and experience frequent disconnects.

Anyone interested in testing this with me?

Just curious...

Can you post a quick breakdown of your 35 devices? Don't really need exact model number.

Also, how many devices are connected to the 1620 as the same time? Are all 35 on at the same time? Would probably explain connection drops.

What happens if you disconnect the Chromecasts and google home devices from the 880L. Turn them OFF fully and test.

I can set up my 880L as LAN to LAN AP and test. I have about 20 devices. I don't have any Google devices.

i have 3 workstations, a NAS and a two media players that are hardwired.

here is a simple breakdown of the wireless portion

6 android devices (tablets and phones)
3 ipods (gross)
3 chromebooks
2 webcams
vizio tv
wii, switch, xbox 360
2 chromecasts and a google home mini
printer
eReader
etc.

Only about 5 or so are on the extender.  One of them being a chromecast.

I will have to test out network stability by turning off the google products and see.

i just checked again, and my DAP-1620 is not connected to my Uplink Router.  This happens everyday.

I will remove chromecasts and see if that makes any difference.

I'n only testing to ensure the router works with out any Google devices as it already should and does. Been up and running for a day now with out seeing any issues with all 10 devices I have connected to it. I'm actually in a online video class all day to day with my PC connected to a DWA-192 which is connected to the 880L. Working well so far.

Sounds like this maybe a Google issue anyways.  ::)

What are your results if disabling all Google devices?

still have issues with devices losing connection to the extender.  Same issues with DHCP. I think i am just going to try DD-WRT.  Most current release seems stables as noted in their forums.  It that doesnt work, I am going to a mesh system.

WIth out using the extender, does the 880L work on it's own? I presume also that you maybe hitting a limitation with having all these devices online along with the extender.

How many devices are all connected. Most home routers only support maybe up to 20-25 devices depending what they are doing. Theres bandwidth and connection per device that are more than just one connection.

I can also test an extender here if needed. Can you disable your extender and just run the router alone?

With most extenders, clients connected to the extender get about half the bandwidth of what is available from the extender to the router. Remember with wireless bandwidth is shared. The more clients connected, the less they get.

Why I'd like to see test results with out the extender.  ::)

Heres my current connections:

Been stable since going online Tuesday evening. SC enabled.

I will be honest, when I bought the DAP-1620, I assumed the Ethernet port could be used for a back-haul for the extender.  That is definitely not the case.

I ran the router alone for many months.  My only real issues were the DHCP limitations.  The router has usually 20 devices normally with up to 35ish at peak times.  The only reason I went with an extender was because I had two rooms with poor signal.  Mesh systems are a bit to $$$ for me.

I would presume that if you added the extender, maybe the issue here. You might try a different extender and test. Location of extender is important as well.

I can add a NG extender I have to the 880L and see if anything happens.

Unfortunately I do not have another extender to test.  I bought the 1620 because I thought it would be best to stick with D-Link devices.

How far away is the extender placement? In feet.

about 20 feet vertically.  It's LEDs show full strength.

What version of FW is currently loaded on the DAP?

And what is the most farthest distance your trying to connect to the 880L router when not using the DAP?

DAP is running 1.05 which is the latest.

beyond 30 feet I would estimate.

I'll set up one of my extenders and see if anything happens.

Would also consider maybe how many connections are on the DAP as well could be a factor. Also the connection rates differ from the 880L. I know the 880L does (600Mbps on 2.4Ghz + 1300Mbps on 5GHz)
Where the DAP only does up to 300Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz).

I've always found it best if using a extender to try to match the same connection rates that are seen on the router. So in some ways, the 1620 will be a bottle neck since it doesn't match the same rates on the 880L.

That is a good point, but throughput really isn't my issue.  It is connectivity.  Devices constantly disconnect and sometimes will never reconnect again unless the router and/or extender are rebooted.

Which could also be due to this point I made about matching connection rates and all your devices being line.

Something D-Link will have to review.

I'll set up my extender which matches same rates as the 880L and see how it goes.

They actually don't make an AC1900 extender.  Only a 1750 or 2600 which were both beyond my price range.

I flashed to DD-WRT and I could not be happier.  System is running flawless...over 30 wifi devices, not a single issue.  In fact, even my wireless signal has improved on my upper floors.  I am going to return the DAP-1620 as I have no need for it anymore.

I cannot understand how the stock FW cannot be improved to be more functional.  Thank god for the open-source community.

Possible that your configuration and environment could be a cause of bad OEM FW behaviors. Glad WRT is working better.

My 880L as been stellar working and operation on OEM FW.

Enjoy.
