Title: Can the Drives from DNS-323 be mounted in Linux compatible hardware?

Hi,

I am copying my data from DNS dns-323 drives to another Linux NAS. The network copy is too slow. I was thinking about using a drive enclosure, and inserting the drive in a dock/enclosure and copy via USB port on the NAS.

Wondering if the EXT2/EXT3 drive will be read by the other NAS. I have done the same thing to C drives from Windows and worked fine.

No. You'll need to review this if you need to get data of the drives if the HW is failed:

Hi Furry Nutz,

The NAS I am trying to mount and transfer data to is Linux based. Why to I need windows in the middle?

Shouldn't the SATA/USB enclosure mount the drive to the new NAS?

You would need to make sure the Mfr of the USB case or caddy and Linux does what your expecting it to. You'll need to check with those Mfrs on any connection concerns and configuration. I presume Linux should see the drive if it's mounted correctly and detected by the PC hardware first, then Linux sees the drive.

Another point that must be considered is just how the drives you want to copy are formatted - by that I mean were they formatted as standard, RAID 0, RAID 1 or JBOD.

Standard and RAID 1 disks can be read without problems (you only need one RAID 1 disk and any USB/SATA caddy should have an external power supply).

RAID 0 and JBOD need special software to ensure the reference data is correctly applied to the files you want to copy - R-Studio used to have a Linux version of their RAID recovery software which dealt with RAID 0 and JBOD among other things.
