"the DGL-5500 uses the Qualcomm Atheros VIVE draft 11ac chipset"
"The VIVE chipset uses automatic QoS technology based on Bigfoot Networks' technology, not Ubicom's."

So who is Bigfoot Network? Check them out:http://www.killergaming.com/technology/ (http://www.killergaming.com/technology/)

Ya, been told the UI is different. Very excited about this router.  :o
Will be interesting to see how this router will handle gaming and multiple game consoles all on line at the same time.

Well what I like is the more intuitive UI. Its alot easier to click and drag icons on a network map then it is to figure out IP's and ports. Lets just hope they allow us to access advanced options too though.

Precisely.  And throw a couple of media streaming devices on top of that for good measure.

Your dad do any gaming? I really wouldn't recommend this router for just the average home user that does email, surf and moderate video streaming. Seems like a waste of features that would not be used.  :-\

Looks great, if its base of their Bigfoot Killer series, should be awesome.

But, my DGL-4500 is running like a champ still, not sure if its worth blowing money just for the sake "mine is bigger than yours"

Would not get much use from the wireless improvements, since all my important stuff is wired now (DLNA clients, ps3, & xbox360).

But their QOS from Bigfoot technology is top notch, especially for lag and ping times.

Supposed to be good. Been told, "it's a beautiful thing!"

Glad your 4500 is running well. They are still great routers, even though mine is bigger than yours. Hehe.  ;D

Enjoy.

ok, can you somehow arrange to get one of these sent out to Tim Higgins at Smallnetbuilder, I would love to see his take on this puppy.

I read some of the details, and it is very interesting concept to set certain bandwidth speed limits per device, not sure if there is anything else like it in the consumer space (at least I have never seen it).

the way QOS is handled by priority on DGL-4500 is great, but i think is taking bandwidth sharing to the next level. No need to let netflix client take all the bandwidth.

Thats in the hands of DLink and the PM there I don't have any say on what goes on regarding that. If anything I want one first.  ::) LOL

I presume at some point DLink might sent some out for review and or reviewers will acquire them by some means.

Actually its weird..I don't think he has reviewed any of Dlink's cylinder type routers. I think his last review was of the DIR-857 if I am not mistaken. Its too bad, I'm a huge fan of his work too. Opening up a router and look at it parts can tell you so much about build quality you just can't get from feature lists and performance reviews. Imagine buying a car without even popping open the hood.

I read that review, and it seems lately d-links routing performance and functions are superior to the competition, but their wireless speeds/range are lacking. D-Link is usually the only ones that implement the better chipsets, like Ubicom/Bigfoot Killer series. For me that is more important, but alot of the ****py cnet reviews tend to focus just on the wireless aspect.

But I will be honest, Asus has really stepped it up lately and might be my next router if DGL-5500 does not turn out that great. Each company is releasing too many products (with many subsequent revisions), instead of taking the apple approach, of making one solid product, and giving it dedicated care throughout its product lifetime.

These new routers look.. fugly, to say the least.

Also, that new UI is ripped right from Bigfoot's Killer Network Manager program (used with the Killer cards).  Though, it's worse because everything is like doubled in size.  I do hope there's a 'small icons' or 'list' view setting for it.

Maybe aesthetics isn't pleasing to some, however the style and form factor of these routers works very well. Based on the DIR-645 which first debuted this new form factor:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51380.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51380.0)

I personally like the new style.  Less desktop space foot print and better WiFi radio signal broadcast operation. ;)

One thing that I do not understand is why this router uses different technology, and only supports AC1300 - yet others, (such as their dir-868L supports AC1750).

Just wondering why D-link would under-spec their high-end gaming router like that.
One would expect them to trump the ac1750 spec, but that's not the case.

BTW, it would seem that all the other manufacturers are planning on their new models in the middle part of the year - all "boasting" the latest and greatest technology and specs.
I have my eye on the new ASUS RT-ac67u (ac1900 spec).

Decisions, decisions...

I would think that it's not always best to always have the fastest specs in products. Besides, AC is still new and not native to most client HW. And I don't think it's been certified as of yet either. I would not jump to conclusions until it comes to market. The DGL-4500 didn't have the best in Wifi for what it was, it could only due one or the other bands on WiFi unlike the DIR 8 Series routers do. I presume there was some reason behind that as I presume there is probably a good reason behind the 5500's specs. Yet, the 4500 is still a great gaming and general purpose router. I speculate that one possible reason is that they didn't want to over tax or under perform what is supposed to be a "GAMING" router so they are putting more into the gaming aspect, form and function rather than going all out and putting the most WiFi. It's not always needed that you technically need the highest WiFi connection. Besides, the speeds are only between the router and connecting devices. Not data flow. Were just getting bigger pipes for data flow. I presume D-Link is attempting to balance HW, design and performance to make this a great gaming router.

Just having the most or highest specs out there doesn't mean things will be great. Honestly, having AC1900, whats available for it right now and what will you really need it for? AC still needs to be finalized and certified as well.

So far I'm not highly impressed with AC. Still needs work.

My 2 cents.

Pretty good analysis!  I'm still going to at least try it out. My thoughts are always looking to get a future proof product where ever possible so higher specs to me personally are always attractive. I've had the 4500 since its release years ago and hope the new one will last just as long.

Of course, future proofing is good as well. I think and really hope that with all they learned from the 4500, that they will, hopefully, make the 5500 to last as long. If I weren't doing much router testing, I'd still use the 4500. Still love that router.  ;D

The "UI" on the (my) dgl-4500 router is still the best that D-Link has ever created.
They have changed certain aspects of it for their other routers - and I still don't like those changes.
When the 5500 comes out, I'll definitely take it for a test ride, as I am always interested in doing things differently and better.
I am sure this will be an exciting year for new technology.
I just hope my aging 4500 lasts long enough for me to test the new ones and decide on a successor.

I can't wait to see the reviews that will start coming in.

Things I'd like to see:

- Wireless performance vs its competition
- Functionality of its "automatic" traffic recognition and prioritization
- Usefulness of its UI

In general, anytime a product touts an ability to "automatically" classify and treat your traffic/devices for optimal performance - I have doubts.
I am not as interested in what it gets right, but more about what "mistakes" it will make in doing so.
If this router will display devices/traffic streams to the user via a comprehensive UI - then at least we can see what it is doing "in action".
If it can do that - and the user can be satisfied that certain devices are given the priority (we) want it to have - then this will be a winner.
