Title: HP Wireless printer

I recently purchased a HP PHOTOSMART D110 wireless/eprint all in one.
I have the dir-615 router and cannot get the printer to show up on my home network.
Printer works fine hard wired to pc but wireless not at all. The ip address of the printer is 169.254.147.xx while everything on my network is 192.168.0.xx.
Printer says connected for a few seconds then disconnected....
I have tried to configure it on a vista and a win 7 machine.
Everything else shows up fine on my network, as a matter of fact a friend brought his laptop over and it connected great....any ideas?

The 169.254.147.xx is signifying that the printer is unable to get a host IP address from the router and thus is assigning a self assigned address. Did you use the CD or installation wizard for the printer to it up? I believe there should be a wizard or installation help that will guide you thru the install process and it should ask you how your connecting and there should be an option for WiFi. Make sure your 615 router is set up correctly for WiFi and the Cipher type probably should be Auto and you should use WPA2. Check the documentation on supported WiFi settings for the printer. It may not support some wireless options like WPA2 or AES Cipher types. I should thought if it new.

Looking at your model, I would set your router up for WPA mode first to see if the printer will connect. Then try WPA2.

Yes, I used the CD and it "sees" the network, I put in the key and it says connected (for awhile). But it doesn't show up on my router page or on my network on my pc.
I even tried to install using the usb, everything went fine until I tried to switch it over to wireless. It told me the IP address of the printer was not compatable with the ip address of my pc?????

I would contact HP and talk to tech support and see if they can help you with this. Seems like the printer isn't connecting to the router correctly. The printer should be getting a 192.168.0.something address and it should stick. You can even save and change the address to a static reserved IP address for the printer in the router if it gets connected.
I presume that your watching the Setup/Network settings page on the router when your trying to install the printer? It should appear under Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients last section at the bottom. You can select Reserve so it will always get the same IP address. You can do this for all of your connected devices.

What HW version is this router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

Try assigning a static IP address to the HP that is outside of the DHCP range specified in your 615.  Also, temporarily disable WPA security in the router, and see if you can now connect successfully with the HP printer.

If the answer is Yes, now set up the wireless.  Your printer supports wireless N, so it will support the cipher you have set, but your best choice, if compatible with your other wireless devices, is WPA2 only + AES; this will give you the best security and the best performance.

You may also want to check to make sure you have enabled N wireless, under the Wireless settings.  If you don't have any G wireless devices, select N only.  Otherwise, unless you have some old B devices, select G,N combined.

You can also experiment with the Channels.  If you currently have auto 20/40, select 20 and see what happens.  Also, have you hidden the SSID by making it Invisible? Make it Visible and see if that fixes it.

The router has the latest firmware but I cannot reserve an ip to it it isn't showing up in the router.
Also the printer is supposed to go online so things (coupons and such) from the internet.
Both have an option to connect via WPS but they won't communicate that way either....

Ya sounds like the printer isn't establishing the connection to the router correctly. If the printer had a LAN port I'd say try connecting that way. Only other way to check to see if the routers WiFi is working is to connect a Laptop or wireless device and see if it can connect.

You could see if you have a freiend or neighbor that has Wifi that you can take the printer to and see if it will connect to there network.

I would contact HP and ask them.

Is there a control panel on the printer that lets you assign a static IP?

I had issues setting up two different wireless printers - a Brother and an HP printer.

The ONLY way I was able to get both to work was as follows:

- Setting up using WPS (wifi protected setup) did NOT work.  Let's just say that the router/printer would never see each other.  It does not work.

I recommend you set it up MANUALLY.
Your wireless config on the router is already set up - so you know your SSID, passphrase, and encryption method already.
On your router, make sure that you make (temporarily) your network VISIBLE.
(this helps the router and printer to SEE each other better - trust me, just do it to eliminate it as a possibility of something going wrong).
After all is set up properly at the end, you can change it back to being INVISIBLE.

Now, on your printer - MANUALLY configure its wireless networking function with your ssid, passphrase, and encryption as it is on your router.

REBOOT your D-LINK router.  This ensures that the router spits out an IP address properly.  I had issues with my dir-615 where it did not want to give out an IP address to the printer UNTIL I rebooted it.  After ther reboot, it behaved properly.

Now log in to your router and verify that the printer is listed in the NETWORK SETTINGS area - under Number of Dynamic DHCP clients.
I would suggest that you now RESERVE the IP address that was given to that printer so it always gets the same IP address if power failures or reboots happen in the future.

NOW you can change the router network back to INVISIBLE.

LASTLY, you can now run whatever software installation on your pc that came with your printer - to set up its drivers/applications. 

The main thing here is that you have to first set up the router-to-printer communications before you set anything up on your pc.

I hope this helps you out.

I went through this twice, with two different d-link routers and two different wireless printers.  Manual is the only surefire way to do it correctly without a hitch.

I have it semi-connected.
HP TS checked my router for the exact same things you mentioned.
 BUT it is a b, g, or n printer and the only way the router will see it is if it is the b,g only mode.
Tried g,n only mode and it won't connect. 
Tried Mixed b,g,n mode again no connect. Put it back in b,g only and it works great....
It's right on the box.... b,g,n certified....go figure

Ya if it supports N then something isn't right with the printer I bet.
Can you use a single G mode?

Just got off the phone with HP tech.
Used their network diagnostic utility and according to it there are two exact same networks being broadcast by my router ???HUH???
EXACTLTY the same, only one says connected, one says not.
He said this was confusing the printer ???HUH??? I'm the one that's confused...and still no n....

They both dissappear when I uplug, but both come back when plugged back in.
The difference now is that one is at the bottom of the list and it says not connected....

Create a new Wireless SSID, something that you can identify easily when you run the HP Printer install program.

Turn OFF all other wifi devices in your house while your trying to install the printer. Turn off after.

Set the WiFi mode to Single mode G on the router for now and see if you can get the printer to install.

what mfr/model router do you have? If it is a dual-band router then it will have 2 ssid's one for 5GHz N and the other for 2.4GHz b/g/n

The printer is installing fine using b , g, but will not connect to the n network. I can even print with my phone, as long as the router is set to b, g mixed. When i go into the router and change it to b, g, n  mixed or set it to use g, n mixed it simply drops off of the network. There is no n connectivity at all....
I can't leave my router on g because my pcs all run on n, plus this is supposed to be a n printer.
Just got off the phone with d-link and they said one is not actually a network, but a hardware profile created by the printer...? ??HUH(again)???

Sounds like if the PCs are working over N and the printer isn't, would mean that the printer isn't setting the N mode correctly. The router is probably set up correcty. After you switch to the G and N mode, do you power cycle the printer after and see if it picks up the N mode? I should at least pick up the G connection.

If, it's working over Mixed modes then I would probably leave it there.

And lets be realistic for a minute. Do printers really need High speed connections to send a print job? I work in the printer industry and ya it's nice to have wireless for printer however a high speed connection isn't really needed and most print jobs are fairly small in size and are mostly processed on the PC first, then sent to the printer for actual printing.

Unless your doing volume printing or working with large picture files alot, having a printer connect at G or even B modes won't impact print performance. Once the printer has been handed the job, it's up to the printer to get it done, not the connection.

I changed the channel from 6 to 11 but as far as 20/40 or 40 you lost me.

found it, changed it from 20 to 20/40, but no joy again....
I think I will take it back to the store and do an even exchange, then start from scratch.
I seriously think this one is a lemon...

Can you confirm that your router is a DIR-615 and which Version it is (eg. "C3", etc)

Can you tell us what firmware version is running on the router?

Did you follow these steps and STEP 6 in particular, below:

To connect the product with the Wireless Setup Wizard
1. Write down your network name (SSID) and WEP key or WPA passphrase.
2. Turn on wireless radio.
a. Unplug the network cable.
b. Touch Setup.
c. Touch Network.
d. Touch Wireless Radio, and then touch On.
3. Start Wireless Setup Wizard.
▲ Touch Network Setup Wizard.
4. Connect to wireless network.
▲ Select your network from the list of detected networks.
5. Follow prompts.
6. Install software.
