Title: New firmware (1.10) release date for the DNS-323?
Post by: mark1900 on August 28, 2010, 07:02:25 PM
When is the new firmware (1.10) release date for the DNS-323?

There are many outstanding issues with the 1.08 firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11993.0), and the current release 1.09 seemed to do nothing to address those issues.

If I remember right one of the D-Link engineers mentioned end of the year some times ago in a thread.
And that it will be major release, inlcuding bugfixes and new features (e.g. open API) which makes it well worth to wait...  :)

I agree LH2312 but it shouldn't take a year between firmware releases, i also own a QNAP and i get a firmware update normally once a month to fix outstanding issues plus new features as well so D-Link is slacking yet again and not supporting there products

I beg to differ here. I'm quite impressed D-Link still supports an aging product so well. Face it, the DNS-323 from a hardware perspective is - almost - yesterdays technology and it was not really a high-price product by then...
Despite that there is/was a constant firmware improvement but yes, I agree, bugs still remain. Nevertheless my DNS-323 is doing well and performs quite good!

If you are interested in learning about a very very sad story concerning an identical NAS - obviously coming from the same OEM source - compared to the DNS-323 and sold by a different vendor (Conceptronic) under the name CH3SNAS just google that..... Folks payed even more for that hardware and now are lost, since the company went belly up some time ago. Those users have only one alternative left: cross flashing to the DNS-323  firmware which is quite risky and definitely not suited for the masses...

IMO, anyone that buys a product based on what it might do in the future is wasting their money.

I bought my two DNS323s baaed on what it can do NOW and I am very happy.

Sure there are a few bugs that I would like to see fixed, but if they had been 'sow stoppers' I would simply have returned them for a refund and bought something else.

What if you buy the product based on what it can do and a year down the track a new firmware is released that removes or changes what it can do, can't take it back for your money back you just have to live with it.
This is what D-Link has done with the DNS323 and they don't seem to care, when there are bugs to fix and they release a major firmware from 1.08 to 1.09 that does nothing for the masses NOT ONE BUG FIXED and they are telling us the end of the year for a new firmware IMO this is not good enough.

If I could take my unit back and spend $100-$200 more for something else I would and when I'm in the market for another NAS what one do your think I'm NOT going to buy...

Rollback to the firmware you were happy with?

Some features like scandisk and ext3 support were removed, but have been readded.

This argument is flawed.  If you can still buy it and it is advertised by D-link on their own websites, then it should be supported, plain and simple.

One can't rollback because the old firmwares do not support large HDD's, I held off from changing my 500GB drives for as long as I could, now that I have 2TB HDD's in the unit I have to put up with the firmware and the lose of function.

I agree with fab4272.  D-Link is still selling this product.  Therefore, it is not an old aging product and they should support it.  I monitor this website and I don't recall them saying when the new firmware would be released.  Besides that one firmware release in two years is ridiculous.  They have major bugs and they should be addressed.

Let me ask one question.  When was the last time that anyone has seen a response from anyone at D-Link on this website?  I am beginning to think that D-Link got rid of all their support staff and that we are going to be like Conceptronic and that what we have is what we are going to get.  It might as well be Conceptronic if they are not going to fix their problems. Buggie software that is not getting fixed. What is the difference? If you look at all their NAS product forums you see the same story.  Nothing from them in months.

I certainly do not have much hope in seeing anything from D-Link.  Let's see if D-Link will prove me wrong and respond.  If I were a betting man I would say that we will not here anything from them.

I think the 323 is a great starting point for people curious about NAS.  I bought the 323 becuase it was cheap. I wanted to actually see if a NAS was right for me and my enviroment, also weather I would actually use it as compared to a *nix PC server.  I have since learned I love the space/power saving of a NAS device, i have then chose to upgrade to a better device (synology DS210+).

323 is nearing end of life for dlink im sure (I honestly wouldnt expect much from dlink on this product), but its still a great starting point for most users.

I am now a synology fanboy, and would reccomend their products.  They come at a price thought.

It really depends what you want your NAS to do. Yes, there are more expensive boxes out there that do much more. I doubt Ford owners moan about Lamborghini's being much better.

The point is, some people don't want IP camera support, automated 24x7 illegal downloads of p*** and access to a lifetime's worth of photos from any destination on the planet.

Some people want a Network Attached Storage system, to store stuff, on the network. And at a cheap price. This is what the DNS-323 does. Yes, there are some bugs - most consumer electronics of this nature do (media streamers, NAS boxes, TVs, even cars - you name it) but I'm tired of reading how apparently cr*p this box is, because it's not something that it was ever designed to be. Whatsmore, with a little knowledge and effort, you can make this box do almost anything you want it to at almost zero risk.

Most of the post's here relate to features that are advertised but are not working correctly.  Whether or not it is an issue with the NAS or their PC I cannot answer, but assuming it is the NAS, then the claims/posts are legitimate.

A lot of posts are a restult of not RTFM, from incompatible or hard drive issues, internal network issues - or from people not fully understanding what the NAS does or what they are doing. Then there's those that have complicated the setup by using fun_plug. And this is the place for those people so we can help them, but it doesn't make the box c**p. It's just like Amazon reviews who mark a product down because the delivery was slow.

I'm not totally happy with all the features and functionality of the DNS-323, but I have to go with Jamie here.  What product can you name that does everything exactly as you would want it to and has no problems with any of it's functionality?
Title: Re: New firmware (1.10) release date for the DNS-323?

I've had my 323 for about a month now and it does what it advertised and what I want it to do. With one exception. uPNP support does not work with Windows 7. I would like that issue to be resolved by D-Link as the box and specs advertised uPNP support. Granted, Windows 7 apparently sends requests in v1.0 format and the 323 expects them in v1.1 format. It should not be rocket science for the 323 to be made backwards compatible to support that and fix the issue.

As far as a public API goes. That would make the 323 quite popular and quite possibly extend it's lifespan due to the availabilty of 3rd party programs to enhance functionality.

But it's all up to D-Link. Yes the unit is still listed on their website and being sold but are they still producing it or are they using up stock? If the latter, I doubt much firmware upgrades will come out.

The only thing I want fixed is fan standby. You know, when you have standby enabled the fan starts to spinning like mad and won't shut down. This is unacceptable when you have NAS located in the same room. It is really that hard to provide this hotfix?

I am referring to a known problem which happens only on C1 hardware and which DLINK plans to solve in 1.10 (somewhere is a thread about it).
So I am not talking about fancy new features but rather about solving current annoyances/bugs which looks like DLINK isn't capable of.
So, DLINK, please make sure you fix the problems first and then add whetever you are going to add.

Also if Dlink can upgrade Kernel to 2.6.34+, we can have 4k drive (like WD with it's advanced format drive) support !

Quote
Western Digital has been working with the Linux kernel development teams and with the vendors of the some of the more popular Linux distributions. Starting with Linux Kernel Version 2.6.34, the latest stable kernel release, the default installations will align  partitions to the most appropriate boundaries on Advanced Format disk drives. For example, the following distributions will default to good alignment for Advanced Format disk drives: Ubuntu 10.04, Fedora 13, Redhat 6 and derived products. It is also expected that by release time Debian 6 (Squeeze) and openSUSE 11.3 will have completed the changes required for the default installation to be well aligned.

This argument is flawed.  If you can still buy it and it is advertised by D-link on their own websites, then it should be supported, plain and simple.

Perfectly said! If the product is being advertised as a highly rated award winning  product etc, it should be supported with regular bug fixes and popular feature requests.

Secondly, has Dlink support replied to any of the queries being posted here? Most of the answering is being done by a few people. I was at the Synology forum and saw so many posts by the Synology support engineers. Is it too much to ask for support from Dlink?

Synology does provide regulare updates to their NAS OS (or rather firmware). DSM 3.0 was released yesterday. It a big leap in functionality and usability of the GUI. Why not good regular updates from Dlink?

I'm guessing money plays a big part as to whether D-Link employees can spend time on the forums. You probably pay for the privilege with a Synology costing 3x what this does. Technically D-Link technical support and the forums are two different things.

@jamieburchell: Here is some material from my post at the other forum.

I have a friend's Synology 210j here with me. It blows the DNS 323 in matters of performance, features etc.  The cost is not exactly 2x(or 3x) of the 323. more like 1.5x for the NAS box. Look at the total cost of buying though:

DNS 323 + 2x2TB drives: 164.99$ (Amazon.com) + 2x100 = 364.99$

Synology 210j + 2x2TB drives: 199$ (Amazon.com) + 2x100 = 399$

http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DNS-323-Ne B000GK8LVE

http://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStat amp;sr=8-1

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?nam e&c=CJ

In percentage terms the synology is only (100x(399.99 - 364.99))/364.99  = 9.58%. Just about 10% more expensive, but much much better performance and features. I tried the DSM 3.0 release. Very polished and reliable and good support for external hard drives. Has a GUI that lets the user initiate rsync backups to the USB hard drive, Amazon S3 or to another rsync capable NAS etc.

I like the hardware on the DNS 323. The metal casing on the 323 and the look and the tool less design to access the drive etc are master strokes in the hardware design. Low end internals means less cost and less performance etc. Thats ok with me. But my gripes are all on the software side. 9 firmware updates in 5 years? Seriously Dlink, is that all your software department is capable of? Hardware is only one side of the product. Software completes the product. It brings out the goodies that the hardware is capable of!!! Enough of my rant. Can't help it. I am seriously disappointed with the DNS 323's software support and features.

Just to answer your statement about tech support vs forums: Forums are a easier and less expensive support tool compared to dedicated phone line tech support. On the forums one is leveraging the expertise of the knowledgeable community support and also the answers provided to previous questions. When one googles "DNS 323 usb hard drive" or some query the first link is to some post in this forum or the other forum. For most people that suffices and that means less calls to tech support. Every company maintains forums and provides tech support on the forums. This is the first company forum I have come across where tech support posts are minimal!!

The DNS-323 is still good and does what I bought it for. I was referring to the prices and thoughts on a similar thread:

Well, the analysis in that other thread is flawed, it does appear that CPU is a limiting factor.  This is my DNS-323 on a gigabit connection transferring a 600MB file from the NAS to my computer.  Not much idle time left, like 0%.

@vishnumrao: I agree with you 100%. I don't think that they have anyone working on the DNS-321, DNS-323 or the DNS-343.  If you go to the forums for those products you get the same type of posts on all three. I am not sure they have anyone working.

@jamieburchell: If you look at the post I believe that he was talking about a DS210+ not the DS210J.  The DS210J  is the closest Synology has to the DNS-323 and it does blow the DNS-323 away.

I really like my Synology DS210+ and am glad Gunrunnerjohn pointed the company out and suprising enough everything works as advertised and more.

Each to their own. I prefer the smart black metal case and tool-less design. I also prefer that it costs 99 in the UK vs. 150. I do not need most of the features the DNS has to offer.

For reference, here's the TOP from my Synology DS209 transferring the same file to the computer.  The difference is that this file transfer comes over at 45mb/sec vs. 16mb/sec for the DNS-323.  Note that the processor is loafing here.

jamieburchell,

Big thank you for that - with the wider price difference it now gives me the question of 'is the 210j still a better choice'.  I've got five323s.  Up to now I have been backing up to 323s, plus bkup to a couple of discs that I leave at work.  Next I have decided to go to all 2tb drives.  With six boxes I can use two plus two father and two grandfather backups boxes plus the offsite.  No I dont want to lose anything.

And in answer to your question, yes I have a Firefox bookmark block of about thirty companies, plus the Google 'dns-323 buy uk -ebay' type searches.  Includes
Ahead; CCL; dabs; ebuyer; europc; laptopbuyer; maplin; microdirect; morecomputers; novatech; overclockers .  .  .
Lesson learned (probably) is to use google uk for uk searches - not the anonymous google I generally use.

Ta again.  BS

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11417.60               (see last post, whatever "quickly" means)

The sad thing is: D-Link removed the post (with a header "Subject: Beta Code!") where they announced the availability of firmware 1.10 for end of the year (last quarter). Doesn't sound good to me. They also mentioned in this post the provision of an open application interface as a part of this firmware release - something which would have boosted lifetime of the DNS-323 close to infinity  ;D

I'm in the market to buy another NAS unit

99 quid eh?  Where exactly?

A brute force search last night bottomed out at about 135 pounds sterling including VAT and all postage and packing.

Pray, do tell . . .

124 (euro) VAT incluse

Hi,
does anyone have any new information about release date for new fw?
Will there be new fw?

Fan problem for C1 revision is really annoying.

This argument is flawed.  If you can still buy it and it is advertised by D-link on their own websites, then it should be supported, plain and simple.
I agree, the product should do what the manufacturer says it does, mine and plenty of others clearly dont. Dlink couldn't give a stuff, they've got your money, bye bye

Nothing at all, they do not even reply to support requests (apart from providing a case ID for the request). This is really poor support .... :-/

Guessing they have laid off or moved to other projects, some of the team players that cared at all about the -323? It's amazing they cant even respond to ANY request for updates on what is going on.

Saying there will be no support is one thing. Saying nothing at all, well that is something else, very unprofessional.

I would advise jumping ship :)

I'm using Alt-f now, an alternate firmware.

http://sites.google.com/site/altfirmware/

Supplies brand new kernel, a number of prebuilt packages ready to install, and compatibility with ffp if you are using that.

Plus is under active development and Joao (creator) is a friendly chap :)

I think a new version will be out shortly, so might be worth waiting for that, but otherwise get to it :)

NOte that it supports only rev B and C boards currently.  If you have an A and would like to help then you could test some stuff for him.

My problem with the DNS-323 Hardware Revision C1 is that the hard drives will not spin down, which means they remain hot which means that the fan never turns off. There is a work around for the fan always being on but apparently (according to support) HDDs not spinning down is a fault. D-link replaced my unit with a refurbished one which does the same thing. HDDs do not spin down, fan stays on all the time. I reported that fault in January 2009, this was the response then:
"I have been advised that this issue will be fixed in the final release however there is currently no ETA.
In the mean time the work around is to change the fan setting to something other than Auto, apply it and then put it back."
This does not help with HDDs not spinning down.

A few days ago I asked for an update to this final release and this was the reply:
"Please note that this bug was set as low priority as the simple work around was to change to the fan to something other than Auto, apply it and then change it back.
Once this fix is performed I cannot see how the DNS-323s operation is impeded."

I asked what "low priority" means and got no response. Don't hold your breath for a firmware update.

I have 2 Rev C units both with current firmware and the drives do spin down. Typically they run about 33C when idle and 38-39C when active.

Just a heads up.  Flashed this on my 323 and lost all connectivity to the NAS.  UNTIL I powered off for a few seconds.  Restarted the box and all worked fine.  Oddly enough my transfer speeds went from 9MB to 15MB per sec.  Nice find.  Thanks.

I did NOT lose any information on either of my disks. BUT if you have any reservations about it, I would seriously recommend backing up you data first.  Just because I did not lose any does not mean a thing and I was more than prepared to redownload all my stuff.

IMHO, DLink should adopt this firmware and customize it for themselves.

Johny, this firmware could be nice and I may try it.

I don't really need new features right now but I'm interested in scanner support, could be worth a try. I would also like to know if it speeds up the drive a little?

The only thing I am afraid to loose is compatibility with my printer, HP Color Laserjet 1600. It is not officially supported but it works well with the original firmware.

I've had this unit for a month now and this fan issue is really annoying, not to mention how annoying it is that D-Link has yet to solve it. The end of the year is approaching and no word from D-Link.

D-Link Sweden, where I live, don't have a clue either about when the new Firmware will be released.

:) - Swedish consumer laws give me the option of returning a faulty unit for up to three years if the fault was there to begin with.

However, the store where I bought it told me they'd like a look at it when I asked if I could exchange it for something else. We'll see what happens, since it doesn't do any good being shut off all the time.

The fact that it NEVER shuts down, which seems to be a problem for many users and it seems to have something to do with Hardware C1. D-Link said there'd be a fix in 1.10 and that 1.10 was to be released shortly after 1.09 and before the end of the year.

Fonz' FunPlug package includes a "fanctl" module with which you can control the fan speed behaviour.

I use a very silent 2,5" SSD in the right bay (Volume_2) so the main storage HDD spins down most of the time and the FunPlug runs from the SSD. No warmth is generated and the fan operates at very low speed or is turned off most of the time.
The BitTorrent client also stores on SSD.
Other users manage to run the FunPlug from USB stick but the r/w speed of the stick lacks performance.

Not the finest solution (SSD isn't that big storage place) but it works fine with an acceptable speed.

Hello,
I'm new here, awaiting delivery of my dns-323,this helpful forum and the promise of new firmware made me feel that it was a bargain at the clearance price several vendors have been selling it at.I suspect that there may well be several hundred new owners now wondering should they go with the loaded firmware or wait for 1.10, any words of wisdom from you experts ?
I previously used a netgear sc101 toaster ! and am worried that I have jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.I'm sure that just as I would never buy a Netgear product again that conversley a show of support from D-link would gain a loyal following for their present and future products.
I don't live far from D-links uk office, perhaps i'll start painting a banner for an Egypt style protest.

The new firmware may open up your choices of hard drive as I believe it will support the advanced format ones. This is especially true if you are look at TB sizes. Fortunately its seems its weeks not months away.

Most new boxes come with newer C1 hardware, and firmware 1.08 (I've bought a lot of these for clients, and have yet to see any come with 1.09). When you get it just flip the box over, and it should say right on the sticker (H/W: C1 means C1 revision, and it will also list the firmware). My advice would be to leave it AS IS on firmware 1.08, and not upgrade to 1.09. There's no need to do so as it only adds 1 option, and it's not related to any "fixes".  I've also seen reports from people that this issue only cropped up once they upgraded the firmware from 1.08 to 1.09, or that it got worse once they did, so it's another reason just to leave the box on the default firmware for now.

True. What's new with every update can be seen in the official web page if you click "Support Resources" -> U.S. -> Firmware. 1.09 only adds support for CTERA online backup.

Thanks for the update. As a developer myself, I understand how tricky these things are. I was asked for an estimate for 46 (yes, 46!) changes/fixes to some financial software earlier today. It is almost impossible to give an accurate estimate. I would rather wait longer for some tested software, so, please do not rush :)

If you are having touble with some of the features how about releasing the ones you have working.  Some of us have been waiting a long time with a lot of bugs and would really like to see some fixes.  Remember if you don't get them all in there is always 1.11.

Please do not hold up the whole release waiting on one problem.  By the way what can we look forward to in the way of fixes and new features?

Hi Guys,

I have installed new Beta firmware. Here are my quick observations:

1. Fan is not working at all
2. My LG TV detects the dlna server and plays most of the video, Audio, Photo formats ( This is great news for people looking for DLNA option)

3. Loaded two Beta applications (Bit Torrent & Firefly) from the site. Now both of them gone from my addons list. So don't install Beta Addons

I will keep updating here as I observe more things

Hi orinoko,

I don't know whether this Fan issue is related to Firmware or not. I never observed the Fan before I installed the Beta. As I saw your post, I went down to my basement and checked the Fan. I just purchased my NAS couple of weeks ago. So wait for others comments before you take decision.

I don't know whether this Fan issue is related to Firmware or not. I never observed the Fan before I installed the Beta. As I saw your post, I went down to my basement and checked the Fan. I just purchased my NAS couple of weeks ago. So wait for others comments before you take decision.

Yeah I got my NAS about a week ago and currently, after the HDD's go into hibernation the fan just stays on even though it isnt needed as the temperature is already low - just a bit annoying as the NAS is silent when the fans arent on, im contemplating applying the beta firmware but a little aprehensive as I have dealt with beta's before!

I might wait for a bit more feedback from here first!

Try a factory reset after a firmware upgrade. This may resolve your issues.

Fan is working. New Beta Addons are working. You need to shutdown and restart the NAS. Firefly working with latest Itunes. WD TV Live Pllus is recognising NAS as media server and also Network Share and it is playing all the files in both way.

Hello,

the Beta FW works fine for me, also do the both AddOn Beta packages. iTunes (was updated today too) recognizes the Firefly's server and works fine with the library.

A previously installed FunPlug accepted the 1.10 Beta as well. So for now, all fine.

Can confirm that my fan stopped.
A hard power-down and restart kicked it off again, for about 5 mins, now its off and the temp is climbing, 45c so far, its usually 36c tops.

Am using FFP 0.5, and hardware C1, UK model. Booting into linux to see if the fan control scripts that come with FFP have any effect.
Edit:  nope
root@NAS:/mnt/HD_a2/ffp/bin# dns323-fan v
program_speed=2546
actual_speed=2546
status=193

Says the fan is running, i can visually see that it most certainly is not. Gah, took me an AGE setting up FFP and various other tools, don't want to factory reset.
Can you roll firmware back?  Knew i should have waited for more feedback.

Edit3:
Have disabled add-ons, restarted. Fan comes on, then goes very loud, then shuts off.

Edit 4:
Reset to factory defaults.  Reboots.  Fan comes on, goes a little loud, goes quiet, stays on.......goes very loud, shuts off.
Bugger.
I hope that they've just shifted the high-temp up. I'm fine with the system temp being 44c, my desktop has been hotter for years. But i'm not leaving it on overnight to find out.

FFP's SSL session is still there, but now says "access denied".   :'( >:(

OK, changing fan control in Power Management to "Low/High" or always on kicks it back in.
Pretty sure it used to be on Off/Auto yet the fan stayed on low to keep it at 36c.

Didn't mind the noise as its in a back room, would be nice to know what temp it'll kick in at.

Yes I think I may have to do this although having it only a week or less makes me wonder, was it working properly out of the box or is it some kind of config setting order that causes the problem?! I am presuming a factory reset doesnt make you re-create your RAID config, its just a config reset?

Yes. Best to re-configure manually rather than import a potentially old configuration file

Thanks for testing/updating all C1 users out there..a few quick questions please:

Q1. Are you saying FFP control on the fan worked with older firmware (which one?) on C1 models, did this version ever power down the Fan with the disk, or just stayed on-slow at 36c?

Q2. Does this mean the new Beta1.10 - no longer runs fan-slow at 36c, (i.e. switches of totally when set to auto/off), and FFP no longer controls Fan temps?

Sending test Email notification doesn't work. (anonymous SMTP, port 25)
Don't know whether the email function itself works or not???

Edit- I entered the wrong DNS server settings. Entering the correct DNS sever IP addresses fixed the problem.

Yes, my procedure was.
1.08 firmware, factory reset.
Flash 1.10.
Factory reset.
Configure 1.10.

Hardware revision B1.

1. Sending test EMail notification doesn't work. (anonymous, SMTP port 25) Edit wrong DNS server settings Doh!
2. Custom ntp server address (ntp.adelaide.edu.au) gives error message when "save settings" is clicked.Edit wrong DNS server settings
3. 45C and no fan. Edit looks like the fan kicks in at 46C.

I do not have any bugs!

Running (2) x WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (4k drives) in RAID 1, newly installed and formatted using 1.10.

With the new beta firmware, it sometimes shows up as being available for my PS3, but then gives an error when I try to connect to it, then can no longer be found.

As well, WMP11 initially saw the NAS after I had configured the media server, but now will not detect it either. It seems there's something fishy and buggy with the device and the media server.

I installed 1.10 without any problems.

A few things I've noticed (still haven't fully dug into it yet, though).

I've got a C1 rev, with a single 1TB WD Green drive.

- Fans come on around the 44 - 45 mark, which is fine with me.
- Light dimming still doesn't work, but I don't recall if there was a fix for that
- I have a lot of trouble connecting to the 323 from my machine (win 7, 64-bit). It doesn't appear on the network half the time. I don't believe this is a 1.10 bug, because I had a similar issue with 1.08. Would be nice if you could fix this, otherwise this thing is totally useless.
- Torrents seem to work better than in the past, but I've only done one so far. I'll try others to see if I can duplicate the bug I had where the torrent wouldn't download.

I would be interested to know what else we can expect in the final build. My 323 has been off for months because it barely works (because I can't connect, as described above). I'm pretty close to selling it and getting a Synology (at twice the price).

I just loaded 1.10 and here are my quick observations:

1) The print server no longer works.  I can see the printer attached to the 323 but cannot print.

I updated three 323's and all had the same issue.  I didn't go through the hassle of going to factory defaults yet but on one of them I rolled back to 1.09 and VIOLA!  I can print.

2) The sorting of video when viewed from my DSM-520 is alll mixed up now.  Could this be related to the box now being DLNA 1.5 certified?  (I don't know very much about DLNA's cert # but 1.5 was established in 2006!  I realize that DLNA is likely just an interoperability spec but is it more?  Is DLINK using an old UPnP version?)  A file named 11 appears before 01.  It's as if the sort was changed but I have no access to change it to what I want.

3) I too had an access issue with W7 64-bit that I didn't have previously.  It only happened once so there isn't any pattern yet but I was moving a file from my PC to the NAS and half-way through I lost access (in a way).  I could see the files but couldn't do anything with them.  I couldn't do a copy and replace or move and replace.  Nor could I delete the file I was trying to replace.  I had to power cycle the box.

My understanding is by performing a factory reset all of the configurable parameters are reset to factory default values. I always factory reset as it gives me certainty that all of the configurable parameters will be compatible with the installed firmware.

It appears to me that F/W 1.10b does not report file permissions correctly when I access the unit using a terminal session under OS X.

Environment:
    Desktop: OS X 10.6.6
    DNS-323: H/W B1, F/W 1.10b, disks are 2 Seagate 250GB in standard configuration.

Steps performed:
    Installed F/W 1.10b
Reset system to factory default settings
Did several things including file transfers
Accesses the unit using a terminal session under OS X  and reviewed the information on the transferred files.

All files, both the new and pre-1.10 existing files, showed permissions of 777 (rwxrwxrwx).

I have reverted back to 1.09 and all files permissions look reasonable.  I then repeated the steps to install 1.10b and the file permissions are reported differently/incorrectly.

If there is a Unix user that could confirm this it would be great.

I don't see the same thing. My drives were formatted using 1.10.

Open finder, select a file on the DNS-323 that is in a password protected directory eg: a users directory, and select "get info". What are the permissions?

If the file is in the root directory of Volume_1 and everyone has read/write/execute access, 777 is to be expected.

Log into the router to find out the IP address for the DNS-323 and the DHCP IP address range.

Log into the DNS-323 and give it a static IP address that is outside the DHCP range of the router.
eg: If the router IP address is 192.168.1.1 (this may vary with different model routers), and the DHCP range is for example 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100, give the DNS-323 an unused fixed IP address between 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.254.

Let's say you have given the DNS-323 the fixed IP address 192.168.1.200, refer to the DNS-323 as \\192.168.1.200
If you have a password protected directory that you want to connect to, change the server address to suit. eg: \\192.168.1.200\directoryname
A shortcut can be created that points to \\192.168.1.200 or even map the DNS-323 as a network drive using \\192.168.1.200

F/W 1.10b does not work correctly with my: 2 SAMSUNG HD204UI (2TB), formatting freezes at 13%
This is a AFT Drive (4k Drive).

Environment:
    Desktop: Windows 7 32bit
    DNS-323: F/W 1.10b, disks are 2 Samsung 2TB in standard configuration.

Steps performed:
    Installed F/W 1.10b
Reset system to factory default settings
Start at HARD DRIVE CONFIGURATION, this screen gives progress indicator when formating in modes: Standard, JBOD and Raid 0 and 1. But haltes at 13%
The NAS becomes unresponsive. The webinterface does not work anymore and the nas need to be switched of from the power to boot again. (reset button does not respond)

Solved the problem for my SAMSUNG HD204UI (2TB) by not using ext2, but ext3 (raid config/format).

Workes perfectly. I'll test the new config this week on performance. Seems a nice update (thanks Dlink!)

I'm using ch3snas hardware so missing out updates for AFT / K4 because conceptronics discontinued providing upgrades for this hardware. The dns-323 workes nicely on the ch3snas. Used http://nas-tweaks.net/128/flashing-the-conceptronic-ch3snas-with-the-firmware-of-the-d-link-dns-323/ to flash my ch3snas.

I started a new topic assuming that the contents of this one were related to its title. Will post here as well:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just updated two boxes to the 1.10 BETA. My media lists seem to load faster when streaming to my PS3, however I can't seem to view any photos in this manner (will see if a refresh fixes this). Also, when navigating media folders on my PS3 I notice that any spaces get replaced by "%20". For example the directory:

"Video\Pirates of The Caribbean" shows up "Pirates of The Caribbean" until I actually navigate into the folder, at which point it reads "Pirates%20of%20the%20Caribbean". This renaming occurs for folders only. File names with spaces remain unchanged.

This did not happen in FW 1.09. I don't like it. I did NOT reset back to factory settings, I know I should have, but it hasn't seemed necessary thus far.

Any thoughts?

If user accounts, passwords and directory access permissions have not be set up again after the factory reset, 777 access is to be expected.

After a change I always Restore to Factory Default Settings and recreate the same environment.  The files are stored within user subdirectories.

I have two 323 units. The first is my primary backup for our two machines (Windows and OS X) at home and it is running F/W 1.09.  The second machine is used as a secondary backup and for testing.  If I copy a file from the primary to the secondary machine, the permissions are reported as being different on the two systems when viewed in a terminal session.  Finder shows Sharing & Permissions as "You can read and write" on both machine.

This situation will probably not bother me.  I may have made a typo the first time I installed 1.10 so I took the system back to 1.09, did the grunt work and upgraded to 1.10 again.  Being retired, I have time to try other things if it will help.

I don't know. This device is so flakey it is unreal. I also don't understand how they can fix/add one feature and break two more in the process. D-Link really needs to get it together. Please stop adding new features until you at least have a grasp on the ones already implemented.

Just installed beta 1.10 and for the most part have no complaints. However....

When streaming video to my Sony Bravia using the UPNP server, the fastfwd/rewind functionality no longer works. This worked just fine with 1.08, but now seems to be broken. Playback (of .mpg files) works OK except for this issue. Anyone else seeing this?

I have reset to factory defaults and re-configured the server, also refreshed it. I'm not sure what else to try.

Thanks in advance.

I have a similar issue when using the UPNP server on a PS3: fastforward/rewind works but resuming play will sometimes cause playback stuttering and prevents all audio from being heard.

I have suffered with this problem of the DNS-323 not showing up on the network for a long time. Try logging-in to the DNS-323, go to the LAN settings, apply and save the network speed, you don't have to make any changes! The Admin interface will save the settings and log-out. You can then connect to the DNS-323. This is a pain and it happens on two DNS boxes I have - I posted a message about it before and other people seemed to have the same problem. I have just learnt to go through this process every time I restart my equipment  :(

Well, I transferred some MKV's over last night. Had to say that it was painfully slow. For 42GB, Windows was quoting around 7 hours, it was shifting at approx 1.9 MB/s. This was from my Windows 7 laptop, wireless to the router, wired thereafter. I got a marginal improvement going completely wired, but even that was only 2 MB/s. I have set the NAS as RAID 1, ext3, using 2 brand new Samsung F4 2TB HDD's.

I'll try some detective work and see if there is a problem elsewhere.

How should I test Advanced Format disks with F/W 1.10?

I have 2 WD10EARS drives, installed them in a unit running F/W 1.10 and formatted the drives as RAID 1.  My plan was to copy 27 large files to the unit and see if the time increased as the drives contained more data.  The transfer process failed on the fifth file.

My environment is OS X 1.6.6.  Data is being moved from a 323(dlink-nas1) running F/W 1.09 and standard disks to a 323(dlink-test) running F/W 1.10 with RAID1 formatted disks.  The files are 4 GB tar files that are created nightly and stored on dlink-nas1.  A shell script on the Mac controls the transfer.  The error message is "bad file descriptor".

Based on this test I would say there is still a problem, but this is my first experience with these disks.  I am willing to try other tests.

I have the exact same models here WD10EARS. I am in the process of filling the hard drives (im running Raid0) and I will do some speed testing when they are around 80-90% filled.

Thats good news.  I am running WD20EARS in a RAID-1.  Interested to hear the outcome.

What is the "sleep" timeout set to under System Preferences, Energy Saver, Computer Sleep?

Hi Dlink,

Are Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2TB now officially supported?  They're 4K drives and came out last December. The exact model number is:

Vendor      Model
Hitachi      HDS723020BLA642

The issue I'm having is that when I first put the drive in the NAS, I get the purple light. I was able to format the drive using EXT3 and after rebooting the drive light went back to blue.  During formatting and now when I'm trying to copy data over to the Hitachi drive from my old WD Caviar 500GB drive, the NAS frequently hangs (file copy stops). No web access and no SMB connection either.  I need to manually unplug it and restart the device.

FWIW, the NAS is attached to a Mac running OS X 10.6.6 with a cross-over cable (no router in between) set to 1000 Mbit transfer rate and Jumobframes enabled (MTU 4000).  This configuration has been working reliably with the WD drives. Only when I put in the Hitachi drive I'm having these issues. I've tried both FW 1.08 and 1.10 beta 5. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Historically both configuration settings are set at 60 minutes.  I would not think this would be a problem regardless of the value since I am moving 27 files with an average size of about 4.1 GB.

Thank you,  I appreciate and suggestion.

Then why D-link reps AND D-link website still promote DNS-323 as a solution to home data server as a long term solution? In addition, isn't it illegal here in Canada to say that a prodcut will have at last one year warranty and turn around and say "anyone that buys a product based on what it might do in the future is wasting their money." Companies get sued for this!

According to laws, since my receipt reads I brought this yesterday from a registered D-link authorized dealer, they must provide support for at least one year EVEN if the product is discontinued.

Has anyone successfully gotten the print server to work with 1.10 beta? I'm having the same problem as  mobilejukebox. Although I can see 'lp' when I browse for printers on the device, when I attempt to create the local port per fordem's technique (\\ip_address\lp), Windows complains that "The network name cannot be found". This has always worked for me in the past. Neither does it work when I attempt to install per D-Link's instructions.

I have been running 1.10beta for about 2 weeks now.
I have noticed the following:
The fans do not kick in when the drives have not been accessed in awhile. The temps were at 45C and no fan, but when I went to get a file, the drives spun up and the fans turned on.

Also, when the bittorrent is running for awhile the transfer rates decrease, even with no files being transferred. If I stop and re-start the service, my transfer speeds go back to normal. Is there a way to start and re-start this service automatically?

I stand by my statement that you should never buy something based on future potential capabilities.

Have been using this new 1.10 build since it came out with the bittorrent beta addon.  My impressions.
1.  The temperature setting to kick off the fans is too high.  I have a small fan in front of the drive going to keep the temp down.
2.  A couple of times the drive has become inaccessible and have had to reboot.  The hard drives are fine by the way.
3. The printer worked fine after the update without having to reinstall in Windows.  Not sure why people are having problems, then again I have the drive on a static IP address.

**sorry to those who have noticed the double-post**

Yep, I'm well aware of where it should be. I have two boxes, "MEDIA" and "DATA" on MEDIA I have no printer attached and under status:

Manufacturer:  None
Product:  None

[Clear Print Queu(s)]

But in DATA where my printer is attached USB:

Manufacturer:  Canon
Product:  MP510

... nothing else!

Will reset to factory and reload my settings. **cross fingers**

@luisito_ortiz :

my two 323's, PS3, and main pc all have reserved ips.

update:

I have reset to factory settings without success. When I unplug my printer and go to status page:

Manufacturer:  None
Product:  None

[Clear Print Queu(s)]

when I reattach my printer via USB:

Manufacturer:  Canon
Product:  MP510

NO CLEAR PRINT QUEU BUTTON!

I would love to blame my printer for this, but I was able to print in 1.09 and could print until recently in 1.10 beta.

For me it's all about suport for AFT 2TB drives.

Has anyone tested 1.10 (release 06) and confirmed that the AFT issue is gone?

I'm dying to replace a tiny 250GB drive with a huge 2TB, I'd do it today if I knew the AFT issue had been resolved.

I'm trying to avoid going through another format when the offical 1.10 comes out (no idea when that is by the way??), as I'd have to find somewhere to store it's data while re-doing the format and set-up again.

Let me ask you this - where is the data NOW?

Just so that you get where I'm coming from - you have a 250GB drive in the unit now, and you're dying to replace that with a 2TB drive.

If you already have the 2TB drive with data on it, you're going to need to find someplace to put that data, whether you do it tomorrow with the 1.10 build 5, or you do it a week from now with the 1.10 build 6 - you can wait impatiently and twiddle your thumbs, or you can can move forward with the project, which may work, or may have to be put on hold, in which case you wait impatiently and twiddle your thumbs.

Option 1 gets you nowhere, option 2 might get you where you want to be now, and if it doesn't you get to wait - and the data remains where ever it is right now.

I loaded 1.10 beta 05 on after 1.09.

Observations. PS3 media server function no longer operational.

Faster to see the directories but nothing in them. Numerous refreshes and reboots to no avail. Also note that Seems to be some problem with PS3 indicating at time protocol errors.

reverted back to 1.09. Noted that it seems buggy. DNS323 not always found.

reverted back to 1.08b09 and find it is working perfectly.

Also noted that the gui freezes at times on 1.10. Periodically wanting to do rebuild of drive in RAID which was not happening on 1.08b09

Drive access at times ridiculously slow as if it were running on a 10Mbit lan. Running gigabit.

On a positive note Windows 7 sees DNS 323 properly in DLNA. Not reliable in other versions.

Let me ask you this - where is the data NOW?

I have around 500GB of data spread all over the place, on my laptop, on low capacity external drives. I've been wanting to consolidate everything on my NAS box but held off because of the AFT issue.

If I clear the small 250GB drive, replace it with the brand new empty 2TB, upgrade the firmware, reset to factory settings, format, shift the 250GB back (which I'll store on a mates 1TB ext drive) + the 500GB. And then find in 2 weeks that the beta release hasn't fixed the AFT issue, I'll have 750GB of data on the new drive that will need to come off again so I can upgrade and re-format.

I just wanted to know if the AFT has been resolved and tested by Users.
From notes for 1.10 rel 05 it sounds like it has, just wanted to hear from and end user.

Will there ever be 3TB drive support? I purchased the 323 and 2x 3TB drives to be horrified that it doesn't support them fully, yet it is listed no where a max drive capacity without checking the firmware revisions (which I didn't).

Can any mod confirm in 1.10 3TB size support otherwise I need to return this device ASAP and look for one that does.

Thanks!

Greetings.

I just installed 1.10 beta 6.

I have a Windows 7 Pro 64 machine that has a drive mapped to the DNS-323.  A sub-folder on the DNS-323 contains all of my MP3 music files.  I have added this path to Microsoft Media Player.  My music shows up just fine on the Windows machine.
My problem is that when I enable streaming, while the name of my library is visible to the other Windows 7 machines on my home network, these machines cannot see any other files.  Media Player keeps saying: "No files have been found on this remote library."
I'm combed the internet and applied every single suggestion that I have found to address this problem.  No luck so far.

My question is: was this beta firmware release scoped to address this problem?

Hi, Anybody knows if Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB - WD2002FAEX is compatible with the latest 1.10Beta firmware? I want to set this in RAID 1 configuration. Thanks.

Finished testing (formatted using RAID 1 EXT 2 1.10 Beta b7),  WD2002FAEX drives were noisy and generating a lot of heat for DNS 323. Had to take the front cover off to make the drives cool.

On the 323 that I reverted back to 1.09, a couple of weeks ago, I installed 1.10 rev 6.  Again the printing function goes bye-bye.  To get it back I had to reset the box to defaults and delete / reconnect to the printer.  Not a big deal but annoying and time consuming.

A new issue I'm noticing is that about 30 minutes in to a video the connection to the server terminates with a message "you have become disconnected from the default media server".  I'm streaming the video to a DSM-520.  I've played this video before under firmware 1.09 with no issues.  I've got two other 323's with 1.10 rev 5 and verified this issue exists with 1.10 rev 5 as well.

My suggestion would be not to play with Beta code then. Wait for a full release then you only have to configure once every year or so. Also, if you save your configuration, if you go back to a previous release, then you can simply load the associated config file.

So looking over the features/updates of the Beta 1.10.  It shows that there is support for 4k drives.
Does that mean that it will work with Western Digital Green drives, such as;
WD20EARS Caviar Green?

Edit, sorry did a bit more reading of other posts, and it looks like they will work.

R.

Well you could wait for the new drives with Thunderbolt Support....

A problem I was having with the previous beta build while using upnp with Windows Media Player on Windows 7 was that the dns-323 would only show the first song of each album. Does anyone know if this is an issue with the dns-323 (versus an end-user-problem) and if yes, did the beta 10 build resolve it?

I'd like to ask D-Link Multimedia if there's a new function/option through the formatting process in fw 1.10 to set the sector size to 4K or the NAS does that automatically.

Although we had to wait a long time for the AFT support, I'm happy that D-Link finally made it. Thanks.

It is automatically set to 4K. All drives including non-aft drives are now aligned as 4K.

If I upgrade my firmware to 10.? and buy a new AFT 2T drive and format it @ 4K, can I still us my old 2T drive that has not been formatted 4K @ the same time. So I would have one 4K formatted drive and one not 4K formatted drive in the same DNS323 at the same time, would this work?

Are you using it in a Raid? If you are using it in a raid then the answer is no. If it is a stand alone drive then when you format it in the device it would format and align as 4K. If you wanted raid you have to format both drives and align as 4k in order to not corrupt data.

A wee clarification. Is this going to affect existing non-aft disks (either in RAID or not) after a firmware upgrade?

No I am not using RAID, I would be using a new 2T AFT drive with an existing 2T non AFT drive with data on it. I would remove the old 2T drive and insert the new 2T drive to format it, than replace the old 2T drive.

Just in case...

No not necessarily. If you have non-aft drives now and load 1.10 it will continue to work fine. If you decide that you want to format the drives then it will align them as 4k even on non-aft drives. Through our testing this does not cause any significant loss in performance.

If you are running firmware 1.08 with drives in RAID 1.
Update to firmware 1.10.
Some time in the future one of the drives fails.
You insert a new drive.
Now the questions:
1. Will the new drive be formatted 4k?
2. Will there be any issues?
Title: Re: New firmware (1.10) release date for the DNS-323?

In that scenario the answer is No. The new drive will not be aligned as 4k since it would cause issues in the Raid with the other non aligned drive. It would be aligned as a regular 512byte drive.

If your unit currently has 512byte drives installed in RAID 1 configuration.
You have a drive failure in the future.
You can only buy 4k drives.
You have a problem.

Well over a year ago this question was asked. I dont think you will see it soon. Personally Synology will soon be getting my money, many more features and regular firmware releases. I think the DNS 323 is restricted by its hardware now.

At this point, the guy supporting this is probably being overworked to fix the bugs from the newer NAS boxes, and will probably get to DNS-323 1.10 whenever he has a chance.  Lets consider ourselves lucky that we even have a recent beta available for a product this old.

Hello D-Link,

please release a new Firmware even in beta stage. Although the latest 1.10b7 is running not bad, the 1.09 offers more stability and reliability so far. As I am very satisfied with my DNS-323, I just want to add two new 2TB drives, but for this I must and want to use 1.10. The new media server is not as kompatible as the present one and I still have random network losses.

Please do me a favour...

Thank you very much in advance and have a nice day!

I just picked up a third DND323 and 2x2TB drives. I upgraded to 1.10B7, formatted the drives, then loaded the more stable v1.09. You may want to consider that option too until a real/fixed/stable v1.10 is available.

I have 2 DNS 323s.
Primary is 3 to 4 yrs old with 2x500GB WD Blue Caviar drives in Raid 1.  One just failed, and is 4 months out of warranty.
Secondary was purchased in February with 2x2TB WD EARS drives.  To be configured in RAID 1 and become the Backup drive to all the computers in the house (and to backup the Primary DNS323).

1) If I flash the Secondary to fw 1.10b7, format the drives and then return it to v1.09, will there be any performance issues? (I am not using uPNP, nor any media server on the secondary.)

2) I need to replace the failed drive in the Primary, ASAP.  I am looking at getting 2X 2TB drives (WD EARS) and using fw 1.10b7 to format it (after backing up all the data to the Secondary).
Again as in #1 is there data issues or would it be recommended to stay with v 1.10b7?

Neither is running any ftp/itunes/media server. there is No Funplug or other enhancements on either of these.

I think DLink has lost the interest in releasing a new bugfree firmware for the DNS-323. For them this device is pretty old and they want to sell their newer DNS-320/325.

It is a pity. They have started so enthusiastic but came to an end too fast.

Well, this will reflect badly on them. If I don't see an official release of their 1.10 firmware then I'm not buying a D-Link NAS next time. The idea is: Why would one buy 320 or 325 knowing that down the short road one would be abandoned? I for one would like to know that when I buy something I would expect full and loyal support from D-Link.

Even if dlink are giving up on the DNS323, I wish they would just finish off doing the 1.10 firmware and then say they are calling it quits.

This going forward to FW 1.10 to format discs and then reverting to FW 1.08 to operate them is cumbersome (and in the venacular 'doing my head in!)

For firmware - yes, I think thats a short road !. The unit has served me well, but the experience with Dlink on this product and some others has led down a different road. Seeing my friends synology 2 bay device, makes me want to change as soon as funds allow ! full gui, no bugs etc etc...

I am running Jcards Alt-F 0.1B7 since a few days and I 've won the following experiences so far:

- a little more complicated web interface (you must read and understand what you want to do)
- much more and detailed adjustment options
- wide variety of usable file formats, even interchangeable (ext2 to ext4, convertible)
- nice Samba and nfs integration
- powerful user and directory management
- better energy options (now I cannot even hear my DNS-323 when it is n sleep mode)
- great choice of installable packages (from funplug and Alt-F)
- overall a lot more features than from DLink
- up to date kernel compared to DLink version

The author jcard has already announced a version with GPT handling. This means that the DNS-323 can handle hdds > 2 TB :o) I can say the firmware is more reliable as the latest beta from DLink and as stable as the actual stable version 1.09.

Thank you Jcard, shame on you DLink.

Beta 1.10 wouldn't be abig problem for me. But it should be a functional beta. As I  already said: I am using Alt-F firmware, which offers much more features and even allows use of drives bigger than 2 TB.

I am satisfied with my DNS-323 and the firmware support through Joao Cardoso is great compared to DLink (what is support?).

Hi,

In my opinion it is a very strange behavior from D-Link to launch a beta version of af firmware and not in the end make a final version with as few bugs as possible - Then it would be ok for D-Link to say that the product is out of date and no more beta or final firmware versions will be made in the future.

But on the other hand, D-Link has never written that they won't make at final version of the current beta, but it sadly really don't look like it is going to happen !

D-Link used to have a great employee that kept people updated on how the new firmware was going.  Whomever they have now seems to not care anymore and on top of that, there is no sign of new firmwares past beta 7.  Since this is the 3rd or 4th D-link product I've had problems with, I've decided to give up buying their crap.  I'll stick with Netgear routers (Even if they are buggy as hell in the beginning, but they do update every quarter) and synology NAS boxes.

I guess you allready know this but just to be sure - valid for 1.08 at least.
If you have created a share directory (=anything but Volume_1 or Volume_2 - root of drives) lets say
SHARE1 = volume_1/Share
and
SHARE2 = Volume_2/share.
If you copy between the share folders like SHARE1 to SHARE2 in windows explorer it will be EXTREMELY SLOW.

If you instead navigate via explorer to voume_1/share. Ctrl+c, navigate to Volume_2/share, Ctrl+v
it is A LOT quicker.

This becomes even more apparent if you copy things inside ie SHARE_1.
Lets say you want to move a directory from SHARE_1/Movies -> SHARE_1/MusicVids it will be VERY SLOW
Cut&paste a 10Gb dir this way will take hours if on wireless - I guess it sends the data to your PC and then back to NAS unless it is some quirk in the FW)

BUT if you navigate via file explorer to Volume_1/SHARE/Movies, ctrl+x, navigate to Volume_1/SHARE/MusicVids, Ctrl+V
it will be INSTANT (cut and paste a 10Gb dir takes about 5secs this way)

So are you copying the files by navigating via volume1 or do you try to cope directly to a share?

"" The point is, some people don't want IP camera support, automated 24x7 illegal downloads of p*** and access to a lifetime's worth of photos from any destination on the planet. ""

Interestingly enough, the DNS-323 and 321 could actually do all three of the things you mention through fun_plug and various ported linux software.       They were nice boxes until the firmware stopped keeping up.
