Title: Forcing Gigabit Lan
Post by: lopan on September 24, 2009, 08:21:22 AM
Hello

I have a dir 655 with 1.32na firmware

I would like to force a 1000 full duplex connection between my router and computer as well as my nas.

I have a DNS 323(nas) and have forced it to 1gig with jumbo frames and 9000 MTU from the built in firmware and am running a cat 6 cable.  No problems there, working fine.

My computer has an Asus P5N32-E Sli Mobo with a 680i built in network adapter.  I have the latest nforce drivers from nvidia and have installed them multiple times.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.25.html

But when I try and force my nic to 1000 full duplex from the advanced tab via device manager it will only show up to 100 full duplex.  I have a cat 6 cable running from my computer to my router.

I have scoured the internets as well nvidias site, and dlinks but cant seem to find an answer.  Please help.

Did you try to change the cable with the other one to the NAS ?
As the DIR has an unmanaged switch, you can't set there anything.

I also have a computer with NVIDIA onboard giga card and Win7/64
I have no option to set Jumboframes.
Crippeled Thing.

It's my understanding that the switch on the DIR-655 is not full duplex, at least not at Gigabit speeds.

Also, some network cards only support full duplex at gigabit speeds, not half duplex.

Not sure it's your problem, but worth looking into.  Try half duplex 1 gigabit on the 680i.

I have tried swapping the cables, but it has done nothing.  They are both the same length, manufacturer and cat 6.

When you say it has an unmanaged switch, are you refering to my inability for force speeds lan side from the router?

And yes it is horribly broken...I was hoping when I switched to win7 64 bit in oct it would solve it...dissapointed to see it wont.

Hey

From the properties under windows device manager the nic will only allow me to force 10 full/half duplex and 100 full/half duplex.  There is no option for any sort of 1000 forced connection half or full.  Only other opition is auto negotiation.

Thank you for the response Techgee

Just tested the WAN and LAN ports on my DIR-655 with A4 HW / 1.21 FW with an Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop adapter.  Intel's PROSet utility indicates link speed to both WAN and LAN are 1Gbps, full duplex.

Not sure what all the comments I've seen about the DIR-655 being half-duplex - maybe it's specific to a hardware version or a certain type of network transfer.

Also, I'm not sure what the 1 Gbps spec is - maybe the standard is full duplex only?

Did you try both ports in your 680i?  I'd make sure you're looking at the right port.

Both switches, Vitesse in A1/A2 and Realtek in A3/A4 are normal gigabit switches and full duplex.
Also gigabit network is complete auto negociating, including crossover connections.

Specs of P5N32-E Sli  are 2 x gigabit RJ45

lopan, 2 things I'd try:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tech

I seem to be connecting at 1 gig now according to windows.  How can I tell if it is full duplex or half since I can still only select auto netotiation?

Stuff like that isn't standardized for Windows - each NIC manufacturer does their own thing.  NVidia might have a set of network utilities, bundled with the drivers or a separate download.  I've found Intel makes the best wired NICs - they have a utility, PROSet that let's one look at such things, but only for their NICs.  You could also sift through the Windows registry for settings, but that's a long shot.
