Title: DVC Should Auto Update Itself
Post by: XRaySpeX on January 25, 2017, 06:44:23 PM
An ordinary punter buys a D-Link camera "off-the-shelf" from a retail store. All he's interested in is a security camera for his home.

What does he get with it for viewing & recording it from the Internet but a CD holding an out-of-date version of DVC, 3.6.4 in my case, that is unsuitable for Win 10, & earlier, by switching UAC OFF & so preventing Win Apps from running.

If he is slightly tech-savvy he might stumble across the main D-Link Support Download site. What does he find there but an even older version of DVC 3.6.0.

How does he know that a version 4 DVC will avoid these problems and allow him to run his Win Apps? How does he know that such a version is available here for download? Does he even know that these forums exist?

No, the ordinary user will not find this site and is therefore deprived of an update that will make DVC hygienic again.

D-Link should engineer DVC to auto update itself over the Net as other software does so that the ordinary user doesn't have to worry about such things.

Thanks for the post. I presume that there maybe more at play with DVC and how it's engineered and coded. Had to fit a lot of different model cameras and operating systems. So there maybe some issues regarding updates and getting newer code so I presume D-Link just comes out with a new installer version each time. There is the core program and then a device pack to go with it.

I think DVC was meant for more advanced users or users with more advanced surveillance needs then the average home users. Small businesses and maybe some enterprise configurations come to mind.

Who know, depending on what D-Link does for future needs, maybe they will have a self up-datable version.

It's OK, it's not as difficult as I 1st thought.

On  the main D-Link Support Download site if you ask for the product DCS-100 instead of your camera model you are offered the latest DVC 4.1.1 for download :).

Regardless of what D-Link intended DVC for in respect of users' surveillance needs, I think it will be used by users with advanced router, firewall & port-forwarding requirements. D-Link as a major router manufacturer would realise this.

DVC is not dependent upon having an advanced router or firewall. DVC is a Windows based camera surveillance app only.

Sorry, I can't agree with that. DVC is only of value when it run as an image & playback (which the MyDLink Cloud does not provide) server on your home PC for access from afar over the Net. For that you require good router, firewall & port-forwarding facilities. It is pointless running DVC as a standalone system just on your own LAN.

The original designed is for LOCAL side LAN camera use. Nothing for cloud. D-ViewCam is optimized for small-scale LAN environment.

DVC has been around for a while and runs just fine with any router. Tested on several I have. Basic internet is all thats needed. Nothing special.

Then why does it provide Remote Viewer & Playback servers?

For which it requires setting of port-forwarding rules, with which many are not familiar.

Good for viewing those cameras or one camera at a time remotely.
