Title: DSL-2750U consistently losing connection to devices
Post by: björn on March 26, 2015, 02:45:19 AM
Hi, my DSL-2750U seems to drop it's connection the whole time. We watch movies on our Samsung Smart TV wirelessly from two different Windows 8.1 pc's in the house.

It used to drop the connection every now and then, but it seems to be getting worse and worse and today we simply cannot browse files on the pc's. As an experiment to see if it's maybe the TV, I also try browsing files on the pc's from my phone when this happens and even the phones can't see any files on the pc's.

I've searched far and wide and have tried a whole bunch of different things with no luck. This is what I have tried so far:
- upgraded the firmware - AF_1.72_R01
- changed the channel from 1 to 6
- changed the bandwidth to 20MHz in both bands
- switched off 802.11n Protection
- factory reset
- changed WPA encryption from AES to AES+TKIP

I don't have WPS enabled as I am not really sure what that is and whether that would make a difference. I'm from South Africa. This is a standard router, not the one supplied through a telecommunications network.

Can someone please advice as to anything else I can try? It's driving us nuts.

Does this happen with wired connections as well?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

What is the distance between the modem and devices?

Hi, sorry, I never got a notification about this reply. Now that I'm fedup with the problem all over again and trying to see if the internet has been able to come up with a solution, I came across this. I'll work my way down from the top.

I'm in South Africa

Never used wire ever. How would I connect a phone to a router with a LAN cable?

Did not factory reset after firmware upgrade. Is this a requirement?

These are my speeds: Rate (Kbps):   up - 4096    down - 509  (don't laugh, it's SA, it's still expensive here)

MTU - 1492

Can't want that "always on" setting anywhere?

SSID has been changed since day 1.
Wireless modes?
If you're talking about "802.11" mode, my options are: 802.11n auto, 802.11g only, mixed 802.11g 802.11b, 802.11b only

I've tried different channels, no luck.

Everything is up to date.

No cordless phones or other devices in the way.

One other router in the area, sometimes I see another DLink too, but it must be far away, don't see it often.

I don't seem to have any of those options as far as I can tell.

Set Auto N for wireless or test single mode G.

Wire LAN cable connect the TV and PCs. Phones don't support LAN cable connections.

ok, it was on auto, i changed it to g only for testing.

there are two other routers in the area according to InSSIDer

why should i use cables if i bought a wireless router for the purpose of using wifi? i don't want to go buy long cables to connect all my devices. what's the point of having a wifi router then? i could have saved some money then and just bought a non-wifi capable router? i thought dlink was supposed to be "the router" to buy? no shot phones don't support lan cables. my point exactly.

sick and tired of issues with this router, don't see why it does not just work out the box. this is 2015.

Nothing was said about a phone. You meantioned a TV and PCs and streaming movies on TV.
2.4Ghz isn't recommended for streaming movies or gaming. 5Ghz would be best for this. You could add a DAP model AP that has 5Ghz to the modem for best streaming performance however you would have to upgrade those devices to 5Ghz for support. If the TV and PCs have LAN cable support this would be preferred. Wireless let alone 2.4Ghz can't not match performance and speeds of LAN cable. LAN cable is best for streaming and gaming.

Ok sorry, I'm just feeling irritated with this thing. Your reply mentioned "Phones don't support LAN cable connections", and it just felt like you're stating the obvious.

Ok you're giving me valuable info which I was not aware of. I can't find it now, but there's a setting somewhere about 20mHz in 2.4Ghz and 40Mhz in 5Ghz, I'm sure I set mine to both or something like that to try and see if I can get past this issue. Does my device only support 2.4Ghz then? This is actually a bit weird that you say 2,4 is not good enough, I mean, we've been streaming media to the TV for ages, with the occasional disconnect, seems like it's streaming fine, except for that one thing at the most annoying times possible.

What about it dropping it's internet connection regularly? Even my ISP says they can see I connect and disconnect all the time, even though I don't. Don't think I mentioned this in my original post, just thought it might all be related for some reason. They've asked me before to get the router tested but it tested fine, no hassles. Hence the reason I feel it's a configuration issue, or even firmware...

I don't think this model modem supports 5Ghz. I think it's only 2.4Ghz only.

You need to reference your Products Mfr support site information on whay frequency they support. Some devcies may not or if they have a LAN cable connection, it's possible to install a 5Ghz bridge device and connect the device to the bridge then the bridge would connect to the 5Ghz wireless. However in your case, you'd need to add 5ghz DAP as a AP to provide that frequency on your modem. PCs and Laptops can be upgraded to 5Ghz with adapters or wireless cards that support 5Ghz.

Streaming mabye ok on 2.4Ghz however things like external interferences, environment and configuration can effect wireless performance and it seems that in your case wireless works for a time then something stops. This is the reason for suggesting using LAN cable connections which is less suseptibe to these kinds of conditions. Also internet connection with the ISP service is important. I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Ok cool. Would I be able to find the info about the wifi frequency in my device's manual? Would hate to upgrade and then only find out my devices aren't compatible. Especially the tv, as it's obviously not a cheap thing to upgrade. I got it around 2013... so hopefully it can operate on that range? My notebook is more or less that age too. My phone  I got last year... strange that my old notebook from 2008 running vista barely ever gives these issues.

My ISP actually fixed the lines leading up to my house beginning of the year. I had the same issue at the previous place I lived with this same router.

I've seen a lot of posts around the internet with the same issue with DLink routers, but no-one really has a solution besides messing about with various configurations that end up not working.

Manuals might have specs. You'll have to check and see. Or look at the Mfrs web site or contact the Mfr on the phone.

Ok, so last night I had some firsthand experience on this issue, and I can only pinpoint the router as the cause of the problem. My wife was watching a movie, streaming from my pc (not over internet, just local network), I was talking to a friend on Skype on my phone.
Again, the tv lost connection to the router and at the same time that happened, I lost connection to my friend on Skype for a few seconds. It happened at the exact same time.
So it seems to me like the router is resetting it's connection or something to that effect every now and then. I'm sure there must be some kind of configuration option to prevent this? Why would it be doing that?

I tried changing the type of connection on the router from Auto n, to b and g, to g only and to b only, over the weekend, on all the other settings, two of the phones in the house cannot get any internet connection through wife. So auto n seems to be the only option that works for all devices.

Come to think of it, this is also consistent with what my ISP mentioned, that they can see I am disconnecting and reconnecting all the time.

Does the modem feel overly hot to the touch?

it's warm underneath, but wouldn't call it hot.

Only think I might try is a factory reset and set up from scratch.
If the problem continues, maybe test some LAN cable connections instead of using wireless for streaming and see if anything changes.

IF the problem still continues, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

ok i'll try the factory reset.

i'm not really sure how using a cable will prevent the wifi from doing that, but will give it a try.

out of interest, why are you asking if it's hot? what is too hot? what would that be an indication of?

Keep us posted on how it goes. At some point I would recommend considering getting into 5Ghz wireless for streaming if LAN cables can't be placed. I prefer using cables for most things including streaming devices. Also the use of PowerLine devices could be included to help with LAN cable placement.

Seen some routers affected by heat and fail due to it. IF you think yours could be experiencing this, you can always place a laptop cooler fan under the modem and test. I use one on general purpose for my router all the time.

Ja, this router is like 2 years old, don't really want to replace it right now. Cables are just a pain in the butt. I try to avoid additional cables like the plague.

Will try the cooling thing too. Did not even know this was a thing.

Thanks again.

Heat issues are usually seen on dual band items however less prominent how.

Give LAN cables a try. Wireless can't perform like copper cabling.  ;)

Looks like I fixed it!

I restored the router to factory default settings. That still did not fix the issue.
Then I changed Bandwidth to 20MHz in 2.4G Band and 40MHz in 5G Band.

Haven't had a single drop since. I also asked my ISP if my line is still dropping and they report that since the 15th (when I made this change), there has been no irregular disconnects in my logs.

So simple, and I have been battling with this for close to 2 years now....
