Title: Shareport installer - nothing is installed?!
Post by: beforetheinternet on January 09, 2014, 05:07:59 AM
I am trying to install D-Link Shareport application v.1.15 onto my Mac running OSX 10.6.8.  This installer is provided in the "support / downloads" support site for my D-Link DSL-2870B dual-band router.

I double click the installer, and it says "Welcome to the D-Link Shareport Installer". I click on the "Install" button, and Mac OSX then asks me to authenticate as an administrative user. I do that, and then nothing happens. Nothing is installed, the installer appears to just silently die.  Looking into the Mac Console, it appears to die with error -60031 which is the Mac security services authorisation tool failing to execute.

Is this a known problem? Is shareport supported on 10.6.8?  Do specific modem models require specific shareport versions or will any version (that can be installed!) work?

Also there is no documentation provided with the installer - is there a user manual for SharePort? Is Shareport required to read and write to a USB drive plugged into the DSL Router? Or is Shareport merely optional?

Thanks.

Try installing v3 or v4 of the Shareport program? I haven't used v1 however I know that v3 and v4 do work...It's possible that v1 is only 32bit and you maybe running 64 bit OSX...

Thanks FurryNutz - I posed this question to D-Link support who told me I do not need to install Shareport at all, the Mac natively supports SMB and if I have turned it on in the router, and configure everything correctly, I can access a USB drive plugged into the shareport.  This works for a storage device, but not necessarily other types of devices (e.g. a printer).

However I did find that the DSL-2870B cannot read HFS+ formatted disks.  It does nasty things to the router, normally requiring a reboot to get everything working again.

Correct, some routers and modems don't support printer connections. You could try to see if the SP app works with a printer connected. If the fails to connect and work correctly, I recommend putting the printers USB connection on a D-Link DPR model printer server with a LAN connection.

Yes, most D-Link modems and routers only support NTFS or FAT16 for USB HDD.
