Title: Rev. B1 ... open source software ?
Post by: arklab on May 18, 2009, 09:44:51 PM
I understand that the rev. B1 will/may support "open source software".

In general, what advantage would/might this bring?
What disadvantages?

Does it refer to firmware, or the "setup screens" - or both?

What are some prominent versions of open source software?

I understand until it is released this must be general info. and "conjecture", but it might be helpful to begin learning about such things now.

Now this is purely conjecture as I haven't been given access to the hardware yet either, but the normal process is that you can upload a firmware from the likes of DD-WRT or Open-WRT and have the full set of functionality they offer.

This would of course change the "setup screens" as well.

It is important to note that D-Link will not support units with non D-Link firmware on them.  So much like funplug for the DNS line, you will be on your own support wise in exchange for the functionality and configurability allowed by the 3rd party software.

Thanks -
I suppose at least some folks find these useful.

As I understand the support issue, if you were to flash back to Dlink firmware, support would again be available.

Can't flash back?
Well we can always use another paper weight!   ::)

In my experience with other products flashing back hasn't been an issue.
