Title: DIR 815 problems
Post by: paulpliviu on June 22, 2012, 02:22:53 PM
So i've bought a D-Link 815 on 21st June(day before yesterday) and my connection drops every 10-12 hours and i have to close and open the router(the 192.168.0.1 site won't even work)...i'm using PPPOE connection..

so far i'm very dissapointed..i've bought a D-Link because i heard it's the best on the market and i play online poker so i need a stable connection all day long and more important i need my IP to remain at one value for a long time and not change every 12 hours(i have dynamic IP)

Make sure the ALWAYS ON option is selected if your using the PPPoE for internet connection?
Some people miss this option.  ::)

yes..Always on is selected..

and i also have to mention that i have firmware v.1.00 from 6/8/2010(the one which came with the router)

oh..and i dont know if it's normal or not but the router is kinda hot

Ok...
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
What region are you located?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0)
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
If your not using 5Ghz, you can turn this radio off.

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended. (http://www.networkcablingdirectory.com/articles/structured-network-cabling-id_1151.htm)

These routers do run a bit warm considering the newer CPUs they are using.

Also, are there any router log entries when this occurs?
Need to see if there is an issue between the router and modem if we can.

Is the following MAC address belonging to the ISP modem?
78:ac:c0:88:55:25
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Seems like something is happening between the router and modem.

Any chance you can call your ISP and ask them specifically if they see any issues on there end with this time frame?

I might go back to unbridged mode on the ISP modem and use the DMZ on the modem for this router and see if you still exhibit a disconnection. Any chance you have a nieghbor, friend or family member with internet that you might try this router out on? See if problem tracks or not.

Also possible that this router is faulty however lets see if we can narrow it down some.
Also let us know if some of those suggestions work.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

ok.i'll wait another 12 hours(i've deactivated the 5Ghz mode) and if it's still disconnecting we'll do teamviewer

and i don't have any modem.it's just the cable from my ISP.

Oh? Can I ask who is your ISP?
So you just have a LAN cable from the wall outlet to the router?

my ISP is RDS and my location: Romania(Europe)

Ok, seen some other routers over there having issues with your kind of ISP service.
I would call the ISP and see if they can take a look at some of the logs during that time frame to check. They should see the connection dropping.

Keep us posted.

another problem...the shop from which i've bought the router repaired the router but now i cannot connect through PPPoE anymore....
when i go to Status it says Busy(at the Internet Status) and stays like that for 5 sec then it says Disconnected...i click Connect and it does that again...i cannot connect through PPPoE..

Have you manually setup the router for the PPPoE connection and make sure the ISP modem is correctly bridged. Once this is done, power off both modem and router. Power on modem and let it connect to ISP service the power on router. It should connect. Call your ISP to make sure the modem is correctly bridged.

hello again.i am having the problem again...and this time is my 5th router...with the previous 4 i had the same problem and they have all been replaced in service....

so every 10-12 hours i lose connection WAN/LAN/Internet and i cannot enter the site(192.168.0.1)...and the only solution is to close and open my router..

ONE more thing...if i type something in Service Name(Setup-Internet) it will not connect to the Internet(i go to status and it says Busy and then Disconnected)...but if the Service Name field is blank i have no problem connecting to the internet

Seems like this is a configuration between the 815 and your ISP modem. I would contact your ISP and make sure the single line levels are correct going into the ISP modem. I would ask the ISP to check the modems logs for any connection problems. Then I would have them help you configure the PPPoE connection on the router correctly. If the ISP modem isn't bridgeable, then use the onboard ISP modems DMZ. They should be about to do that. If this is your 5th modem, this tells me the problem is else where on the system.

If you'd like more help here, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

yes but its very strange since the people at the Service confirm my problem every time and they replace my router...and on the site from which ive bought the router there are also some reviews and they say that it works fine with the ISP i have...

I would presume something with the ISP service, ISP Modem or how the configuration of the 815 is being done is the problem. Is there anyone around there that can come help you set it up and check the configuration to make sure its set up well?

well i doubt is the ISP because once the connection is lost i cannot enter 192.168.0.1 anymore...when i had the older router(a TPLINK or something) it would let me enter the config site even if the ISP connection was down...and one more thing..when the i have the problem the icon in the right bottom screen appears with a yellow exclamation mark meaning theres something wrong between the PC and the router...

at my old router it would appear with no exclamation mark even if my Internet Connection was down but my PC-router connection was ok..

and yes..can you check if my config is right ?with TeamViewer ?

User needs to update NIC drivers on PCs.
Configured Wireless settings, turned off 5Ghz radio, enabled SPI, Set Auto Uplink speed. Speed tested was good up and down. Set up reservations for PCs. PS3 would not connect until it was set for DHCP on router. Then it would connect. This should connect either way. So it's DHCP for now.

v1.00 is loaded however there is no more current official released fw on the RO web site as of this date.

Should be able to test router with current reconfiguration and see how well it works. Router is connected to a wall outlet with ISP services, no modem at users place.

I have a problem with the 2.4ghz band. It's not working at all. Even the led is turned off. I've checked in the settings area and it's marked to be on. It's a hardware problem or it's just crazy :-)?

Would you download your regional FW file from here:
http://www.dlink.com/ro/ro/support/product/dir-815-wireless-n-dual-band-router (http://www.dlink.com/ro/ro/support/product/dir-815-wireless-n-dual-band-router)

Do a factory reset with a wired LAN PC connected.
Load the FW .bin file unpacked from the .zip file using IE or FF. Disable any browser add-ons and 3rd party PC security.
After the FW file completes loading and the router reboots, do one more factory reset and set up from scratch.
Set no WiFi security on the 2.4Ghz radio and test to see if you can get any devices connected to it.

Let us now how it goes...

I've done this, but I think it's a hardware issue since the led for 2.4ghz doesn't light up.

Yes I agree, I believe this unit needs to be RMAd with D-Link.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional Linksys support office and ask for help and information regarding this. Ask for an RMA. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Ok thanks. Depending on the cost since it's out of warranty, I'll probably end up buying a newer model :-)

Ya maybe your only option. The only other suggestion would be to just disable the 2.4Ghz WiFi radio on the router and connect up a wired DAP-1360/1522 model wireless AP to replace the function of the 815s radio thats failing if you wanted to keep the 815 as a router.

Let us know what you decide to go with.
