Title: Weird file size error showing on PS3
Post by: h00ch on January 25, 2009, 06:18:11 PM
When using the DNS-321 with my PS3, if I select "All Videos" from the PS3 menu, I can play all movies fine.  When I select "Folders" then browse to movies in my folder structure, some movies play only part way then stop.  When I check the file size of these movies, they are MUCH smaller than they should be.  Checking the file size when selecting "All Videos" from the PS3 main Video menu, looks right.  I tried logging on the the DNS-321 and refreshing the UPnP server and power-cycling the PS3 & re-finding the media server, but still shows the funny file sizes.  Any idea how to fix this?  I'd like to be able to browse to movies by selecting folders, rather than scrolling through one big list.

What is the actual file size and what size are you seeing?

One movie is about 6 GB and is showing as 1,020kB and another is about 8 GB and is showing as about 500MB.

Do you only see this issue with files that are very very large? Can you see if your files that are under 2GB have the same issue?

Not happening to smaller files that I can see.

Do you see a size limit to were you start to see this issue? 2GB or 1GB?

The smallest file that I've noticed that gets cut off is about 1.5 GB.  (but only displays about 500MB)

Does this behavior continue if you use a PC based AV server?

I do not run a PC based server.  If you can suggest one, I'll try it.

Windows Media Player 11 has one built in. Try it with that and see if the issue persists. If it does there may be a larger issue with your network or the PS3 itself.

Windows Media Player works fine, I can see everything with the proper file sizes.  Also, the PS3 will eventually show the proper file length after a couple of days, but I did see some new files that display OK using Windows Media Player that were wrong using the DNS-321.

sounds like a issue with PS3.

How can you say that?  Using the PS3 to look at files served by Windows Media Player on my PC works fine.  Using the PS3 to view files from the DNS-321 doesn't?  Maybe you mis-read my last post...

I did, I took it to mean that you saw files properly displayed with Windows media 11, but those same files were eventually displayed properly with DNS?

I misunderstood.

Ok, that being said, you wouldn't happen to have an XboX360 to test with would you?

Nope, no 360.  I have a PSP, so I'll try looking at those same problematic files on the DNS-321 through the PSP and see if I have the same problem.

What I meant was that the files I was originally seeing as the wrong size (when I first posted here) are now showing as their proper size, but files that I have added to the DNS-321 since then are showing the wrong size.

hmm
power cycle the DNS, does that help?

I tried forcing the refresh via the browser interface and power-cycling and neither works...  If I wait a few days, it eventually looks OK.

Try manually refreshing The UPnP AV media server and see if the files show a different size or the proper size now.

I'm interested to know if this is a re-occurring issue.
ECF have you seen this before, or is it isolated to his network?

-h00ch,
what model PS3 do you have?

Im looking to see if it showing the wrong information when it adds the file to the UPnP AV media server index on the fly as opposed to a manual refresh since he stated his original files he was having an issue with now show the proper file size. There was a similar issue with the UPnP AV media server on the DNS-323 with files larger then 2GB, however it did not correct itself over time and show the proper file size. this issue was fix in the latest firmware.

hOOch, Something you can try if you dont mind. Factory reset the DNS-321 when log in and run the manual refresh and see if it immediately fixes the issue with all your file. That may give us a better idea of what might be going on.

Yes, I've tried manually refreshing the UPnP server many times before, but that does not solve the problem.  If I wait 2 or 3 days I will eventually see the proper file size, but it doesn't matter whether or not I do a manual refresh.

I just tried doing a factory reset then a manual refresh and still shows the wrong file size.

Still scratching your heads?  I just copied over a few ~700 MB DivX movies and they show the wrong file size too.  I tried a refresh, still no good.  Tried a power cycle, still nothing.  Tried a factory reset, then another refresh, still the same...  oh well, I guess I have to wait until the weekend to watch them.   ::)
