First off, I assume both the DNS-323 and DNS-321 share the same code base for the firmware, because I'm getting the exact same issue found in this post http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1958.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1958.0)
My hardware is as follows. A D-Link DNS-323 (hardware version A1) with 2x Western Digital 500GB drives (model WD5000AAKS)
I've got two Hitachi 60GB drive that will format in RAID1 just fine, but I'm unable to get my two Western Digital 500GB drives to do the same. Regardless if they are formatted one at a time, JBOD, RAID0 or RAID1, it always hangs at 94%.
I've already updated the firmware to rev 1.05 and reset back to factory defaults. From there, I disabled power mangement and set the page timeout to 90 minutes. I've tried setting both drives to SATA-1 transfer mode using a provided jumper. Using a diagnostic utility from WD, I ran full tests and erased both drives with a low-level format. I've also tried this using IE7, Firefox 2, and Firefox 3. No go, same 94% formatting issue.
Any suggestions other than returning my two drives? Or should I hold out for an updated 1.06 firmware rev? Please fix this soon, I really have a lot of data I need to dump someplace safe. :'(
-
I had this problem with Internet Explorer...if I let it sit another hour, then reset the device, it worked fine. Alternatively, if you access the setup wizard with Firefox (what I did on my 2nd device), it works fine.

I've also tried this using IE7, Firefox 2, and Firefox 3. No go, same 94% formatting issue.
As I've stated above, I tried three seperate browsers. I've even cleared out IE, Firefox cache and ensured all browers are set back to default settings.
For what it's worth, I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit (Ya ya, I know...).
-
Please try these steps if you see a format hang up in 94% during RAID fault tolerance test.
1. Use 1.05 firmware
2. Clean the web browser cookie (tools-->internet options-->delete cookies).
3. Do the raid1 format again.
Try another browser if you still see this issue on your PC.
-
Using a diagnostic utility from WD, I ran full tests and erased both drives with a low-level format.
Have you tried removing all partitions from both drives as apposed to using utilities? I just tested the 5000AAKS model and did not see this issue on the DNS-323, DNS-343, DNS-321.
-
Have you tried removing all partitions from both drives as apposed to using utilities?
Just so we're all clear. A Low-Level format erases everything on the drive. Regardless of what file systems or partitions are on a drive, once low-level formatted, it's gone. Technically, all sector bits are flipped back to zeros.
When you format a drive the long way with ether an OS install or NAS device, it's classified as a High-Level format.
So to answer your question, a Low-Level format supersedes any manual partition removal. Without question, it's a thorough wipe to bare metal.
-

Interesting. What DNS-323 hardware rev were you using? Mine says A1. Also, did you run the web interface from XP or Vista?
-
I have similar problem. What I did to fix the problem is to take the drive out and connect it to a computer, delete all the partitions and then format it from windows. Once the drive is formatted, I put it back into the NAS and format it again.
-
Guys, I've already flushed my browser cache from their individual settings. In fact, I've even cleaned out all temp files too with CCleaner. No go, same issue.
Any other suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem with some Seagate 750GB drives. 94% hang every time attempting to set them up for RAID1. I got my DNS-323 today and have now spent a good part of 8 hours wrestling with this thing trying to get the thing formatted.
I've upgraded to the 1.05 firmware, I've deleted cookies/emptied cache. I've physically removed the drives , reset the device , re-installed and it has happend over and over now.
I tried formatting both drives seperately where it hangs at 94%, but on reboot the drive is accessible and readable. Now whenever I try a RAID format it fails.. but the drives are still individually accessible. If it was actually doing a format, they should end up after each failed effort as unreadable especially trying a RAID format.
I'm also somewhat troubled by the fact that every single menu item you click on leads to a broken page with a redirect to get to the correct menu tab. I mean it works, but surely every single menu page having a broken link on it was noticed when the device was being shipped ?
The device is HW version B1, shipped as F/W 1.03 now upgraded to 1.05.
The drives are : Seagate Barracuda 750GB 7200RPM 32MB SATA 1.5Gbs (ST3750330AS)
Using XP / IE7
I can see many mentions of the 94% failure to format on various forums on the web, so this is by no means an isolated occurance.
I'm sitting here looking at yet another 94% failure. At this stage the device is basically an expensive paperweight and there doesn't seem to be any other options to try. The device simply won't format these drives correctly and imo it isn't actually even trying to format them as the drives formatted seperately are remaining readable after a failed RAID format attempt.
-
Yet another 94% failure, trying to format both discs together under the RAID menu but as seperate discs. Up to the 94% mark could see both drives periodically flashing.. at 94% activity stops and this message displayed.
"This document has moved to a new location. Please update your documents to reflect the new location. " Under the progress bar.
Location was a hyperlink to here ; http://192.168.1.102/web/formatHD/format_disk_status.asp?id=3647845
Clicking on it just displays another progress bar frozen at 94%.
Reboot device and sure enough both drives still seem to think they are ok and seperately accessible. I also see that the device names are different (one shows as DNS-323 which I had renamed it to, the other still shows dlink94F-876 which is its default name) yet another indication that the format isn't actually doing anything.
edit - so downloaded Mozilla as it was suggested as a possible part of the solution. Under Mozilla all the broken links at least work, so those are definately caused in some way by IE7 (had popup blocker turned off still happened). Trying a format via mozilla at the moment.
edit edit - hung at 94% trying via Mozilla to access device.
-
Similar also to problem reported here
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1872.0
I tried the suggestion there to do multuple restore to factory settings/reboots then reformat. Same problem crashes at 94% again.
-
Also noticed that last attempt that you reach a point where the progress bar continues to move but the drive activity lights no longer flash, they are just steady blue but no evidence of ongoing activity. I've just watched it on this current attempt go from 70% to 85% without any activity light flashes from either drive. Earlier in the process the 2 drives would alternate visibile activity. And of course it hung again at 94%.
-
So just to sum up the 10 glorious hours I've spent today on this stupid device.
I've tried accessing the DNS323 from multiple PC's with multiple browers. I've tried the drives in the device solo, in pairs in normal, jbod, raid1,raid0 and they all result in a hang at 94%. No matter what I do, the DNS323 reports back that the drives are in the unit in 2 volumes both identical;
Volume Name: Volume_1
Total Hard Drive Capacity: 737329 MB
Used Space: 24 KB
Unused Space: 737329 MB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volume Name: Volume_2
Total Hard Drive Capacity: 737329 MB
Used Space: 24 KB
Unused Space: 737329 MB
If I go to the Tools>RAID menu option it remains stuck on "change the hard drive configuration or format the newly installed 2nd drive" and the option to Set RAID type and format is availiable. Clicking this just loops over and over with a hang at 94%.
The drives seem to think they are working, but there is no way I can trust any data to them as they've never reported back that they have completed formatting correctly, and the system still seems to think the 2nd drive isn't formatting even though the system menu says it is.
Done for the day giving up.
-
So back again trying again.. same problem the following day.
I've now found this thread here
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1920.msg9378
Under point 15 it appears that these DNS systems can get themselves totally screwed up with the partitions they create and for whatever reason the formatting they have internally to them can't reinitialise a disc properly. From the problems I've seen here with the drive labels not reformatting, and failed formatting still producing readable discs I'd conclude that is the problem.
Now my only solution appears to be to buy another hard drive enclosure for the sole purpose of deleting a partition on the discs before putting them back into the dns-323 (if I'd had a spare drive bay I wouldn't have needed the dns-323 in the first place). There is no option in the menu to delete a partition or to recover from a failed format attempt as per the suggestion there, that really needs to be in the tools availiable to the command console.
-
I give up with this pos. ???
I went and bought an external USB cage to put the drives into, and sure enough they had multiple corrupt partitions on each of them. I deleted the partitions on the drives and put them back in the DNS-323. Booted it up and it started with the request to format via RAID 1 ... which I did and guess where it hung ? Yep 94%.
The drives when I put them into the USB cage each had 3 partitions on them , 2 of around ~540MB and a 640GB or so one, all 3 of unknown type.
So I've now bought this device, 2 hard drives, an external single USB drive mount.. for a grand total of zero useable storage. >:(
All it has done after all that effort is to leave me again with ;
Total Drive(s): 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volume Name: Volume_1
Total Hard Drive Capacity: 737329 MB
Used Space: 24 KB
Unused Space: 737329 MB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volume Name: Volume_2
Total Hard Drive Capacity: 737329 MB
Used Space: 24 KB
Unused Space: 737329 MB
It completely fails to create a RAID array and under the Tools>RAID section it is still stuck on ;
"Change the hard drive configuration or format the newly inserted 2nd drive. "
I have no idea if the drives are useable or stable as the device never completes formatting them and half the time when I power it up it prompts me to format the drives.
-
I just like talking to myself.
I believe I've fixed it. Though completely assbout how I had to do it.
Found post on a Linux forum about a similar problem being fixed by reverting to firmware 1.04. So downloaded 1.04 from d-link us site (not on aust site) , flashed back to 1.04. Reformatted drives under RAID, hung at 94% but when you click the broken link it continued on and said success. Drives display as single RAID 1 volume now.
However, device now inaccessible with easy search when you to to map the drive , comes up with login box and after a long pause comes back with device inaccessible. Reboot, same.
In desperation flash back to 1.05 , don't reformat. Now device is mappable and still says RAID 1 present and in correct size. No idea though if it has formatted correctly.
Is there anyway now to do an integrity check of the formatted volume ?

You mentioned you have Seagate drives. In that case, download the SeaTools and run them to perform a low-level format. This will reset all drive sectors to "zeros". Whatever data, partitions, or file systems you had on it will be totally erased.
I would recommend downloading the bootble DOS iso and boot from the CD created with it. I've never tried the Windows version, but give it a shot if you have trouble with the DOS version (some motherboards are incompatible it). Also, be sure *not* to format your system drive unless you feel like reinstalling Windows and recovering lost data from previous backups. So be careful with this utility!!!
You can download them here http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/ (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/)
-
Yah I had/have SeaTools though it wasn't detecting the drives in the DNS-323. When I put the drives into a USB drive bay it picked them up no problems and that is what I used to reset the drives.
As per my notes, the device appears to be succsessfully configured now for RAID1 though I still don't really trust it. I have copied data to it and tested accessing it from multiple access points now though.
For whatever reason the problem appears to be caused by the 1.05 firmware as the thing that finally fixed it for me was reverting to the 1.04 version, doing the format under 1.04 then upgrading back to 1.05. Still screwy though as after the reinstall to the 1.04 firmware you can access the mgt console of the device and it appears via EasySearch but when you try to map a drive it locks you out. The upgrade back to 1.05 fixed that , but why should it have been neded ? Who knows.
Is there an EXT2 utility I can use to verify the drives in their configured state before I transfer all the actually important data to this unit ?
Best advice seems to be to avoid upgrading the firmware on a new unit until your drives are formatted, then doing the firmware upgrade afterwards. I believe where I went wrong was following the instructions to upgrade the firmware before doing the format of the drives in the first place.

Correct, none of those utilities will directly access the drives through another form of abstraction such as a NAS device. In fact, I'm suprised that it even managed to access the drive through though a USB bridge (your external drive bay). None the less, it worked and that's what counts.
Is there an EXT2 utility I can use to verify the drives in their configured state before I transfer all the actually important data to this unit?
I'm not sure if it will help, there there is a utility that will mount EXT2 drives in Windows. Check it out here at http://www.fs-driver.org/ (http://www.fs-driver.org/)
Best advice seems to be to avoid upgrading the firmware on a new unit until your drives are formatted, then doing the firmware upgrade afterwards.
So I've heard. But like you, I'm still not confident that I can rely on it. I'll wait till v1.06 or otherwise stated by D-Link. I've already purchased two 500GB drives. I'd don't want them going to waste. Besides, I need to offload my files. Perhaps I'll just use one formatted in NTFS to store them for now.
-
I'm having the same issue. 2 WD 750 drives and get get them formatted. Ready to add them into computer case and do software raid there. I'm very disappointed with the 323
-
Got them formatted!
1) Went back to 1.04 firmware.
2) Formatted as single drives
3) Then formatted as Raid 1
4) Loading data now and staying with 1.04 until 1.06 proves stable.
Cheers
Mike

You can connect the drives to you PC and remove the partitions using the Windows disk utility and then place them back into the DNS-323 and format.
-
hi folks,
well I've had the same 94% format stuck problem... really really anonying! >:(
However I have now fixed it. Hope this information helps other with 94% format issue :)
First off Installed 2x 250 GB Hitachi Deskstar drives one is HDT722525DLA380 and orhter was HDT725025VLA380 SO one was on the compatable drive list and one was not.
Then Tried Samsung Spin point 500GB HD501LJ drive.
In all Cases drives would stick at 94% when formated. I tired each drive induvidually, in raid 0 and 1. I tried each drive in each slot. I Zero formate devery drive (low level format took about 2 hours per drive :o). All attempts were conducted on a 100Mbps wired network.
I used Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3 browsers on my freshly installed Windows Vista Ulitmate operating system.
I tried firmaware 1.05 and 1.04
STILL HAS SAME DAMN PROBLEM!
Kick the Dns 323 box around the room for a few hours and it still didn't work :P
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So next morning and a few hours sleep I thought I would tried something different:
1. I got firmware 1.05 from D-Link Australia for DND-323 with Hardware B1 not A1 as listed on other D-link websites. My DNS 323 was hardware B1 version.... god knows if the firmwares 1.05 is actually any different.
2. Installed both 250GB drives in DNS 323 (BTW these drives hald already failed to format so had several partitions on them form the DNS the previous day).
3. Connected the DNS-323 and my PC together via a 100Mbps switch I had instead of the Tenda Cable router I had been using.
4. Fresh install of Windows Vista Ulitmate on PC
5. Installed only my chipset drivers and lan drivers on the pc. NO graphics card or Sound card drivers. No updates from windows update were installed either. (Actually I hadent even registered the online at this point - still on 30 days activation thingy).
6. Installed D-Link Easy Search 4.2.0.0
7. Logged in and started format USING INTERNET EXPLORER 7
8. hold brath were at 93%, 94%, and rapidly thougth 95%-100%.
PARTY!!!!!!
now I think the real reason It formated this time was I used the switch instead of my Tenda W302R wireless cable router. If anyone else is having trouble with the 94% issue I would try and connect the DNS-323 direct to your PC and nothing else on the network (I assume it will work - maybe need a patch cable or something?).
I used the switch cos I was going to install it this way eventually anyway and use a networked printer scanner thingy...
Now I've got past this annoying 94% format issue what a really 8) product! Torrent working, streaming music, photo and videos to the Playstation 3 - no issues yet!
Still early days and some issues are present - starting a torrent locks my pc form the drive untill I reboot it - but looking damn promising yeah!
-
I got firmware 1.05 from D-Link Australia for DND-323 with Hardware B1 not A1 as listed on other D-link websites. My DNS 323 was hardware B1 version.... [exploitive deleted] knows if the firmwares 1.05 is actually any different.
I've got hardware version A1 which uses the Marvell 88F5181 chip. The B1 uses the newer Marvell 88F5182 according to http://wiki.dns323.info
Despite what the Austrailan FTP site says, both dns323_firmware_105 files for A1 and B1 are the exact same file size. In fact, I downloaded them both and the one from the US site too. All three generate the exact same MD5 hash of "ee32a92228e22c6ea0a94ed88a5135a2". I suppose dlink compiled a single file that's cross compatible between the different hardware revisions. Or maybe not which is why some of us are having such problems with drive compatibility issues.
-
Yup, the 94% bug got me too!
Updated firmware to 1,.05 before any drives connected, tried to format using Raid1, and stopped at 94%.. Drives are 1Tb Seagate. Tried every configuration possible, diferent browsers and so on.
After quite a few call to Tech Support and try this and that, finally got someone at level 2 that really knew this stuff.. The trick is to format the drives with "standard" option first, once i did that it stopped at 94% for quite a awhile but Easy search now showed volume1 and 2-- to use raid log into the storage device and format to Raid, the process completed and all is good. I ordered 2 of this units, the second one with 500Gb seagate drives, i repeated the process again and was flawless.. pain to have to format twice but does the job. Overall seems like a great unit, the FTP part works well, and some features are really nice to have..
-
I had the 94% problem initially....
here's what worked....
-- flash backward from firmware 1.05 to 1.04
-- in the user interface go to >>> Tools >>> System >>> Idle Time:
-- change "Config Inactivity Timer" Value to 90 minutes and
"Download Schedule Inactivity Timer" Value to 90 minutes
-- once the Drives are formatted and you select your RAID configuration, then
you can flash back to firmware to 1.05
Post here if this works / doesn't work for you....

Hi there, here's what i did when I encounter the same problem with you in formatting the drive to RAID 1 then hangs up to 94%.
First I tried to reset the DNS-323 when the drive hangs up to 94%, then format the drive to Standard Individual Disk, after formatting to the drive to Standard, I tried to reformat again the drive to Raid1 and it was successful. Hopefully this trick will help you.
-
I hit the same wall with 94%... But what I did then is I left it overnightin this state. In the morning - voila -it was formatted. I had to manually reboot it though...
I'm guessing on some drives it goes to a lower level of formatting, and it takes quite some time to format those huge volumes.
-
I've had similar issues on both the DNS-323 RAID1 and the DNS-343 RAID5 (haven't tried other RAID combinations). I've managed to get a *full* RAID format with f/w 1.05 whenever I bump up against the 94% hang by performing the following steps:
1. Save the DNS-323 Configuration.
2. Reset the DNS-323 to factory default.
3. Power-off the DNS-323.
4. Remove the HDD's from the unit and use a disk utility to remove *all* partitions that appear on each HDD.
Windows Disk Management, Paragon, or other HDD utility should allow you to do this.
5. Insert the HDD's back in the unit - preferably not in the same bays they were in (i.e. swap them around).
6. Power-on the DNS-323.
7. Log onto the DNS-323.
8. Run the Wizard Configuration utility to prepare your HDD's.
A) When I log into the DNS-323, I am usually presented with a
message that the HDD's are in the incorrect order; I change
the Address Bar URL in my web browser to:
http://<DNS323>/web/formatHD/raid_wizard0.asp?id=9706342
<DNS323> = The NetBIOS name of the DNS-323 or IP Address
B) Format each HDD as separate volume to confirm the HDD's are not defective.
C) Reformat as RAID of choice.
9. Restore the DNS-323 configuration (optional).
Notes
~~~~
- I suggest powering-off and powering-on the DNS-323 at least once between format cycles.
-
Here is my experience.
a) FW 1.04, never tried 1.05, waiting for 1.06 ever so patiently
b) Hooked up through a Linksys WRT54G Router
c) Tossed in 2 new seagate 1.5 TBs . (fw CC1H)
d) One had been preformatted to NTFS on a PC but otherwise unused.
e) Logged into the DNS-323 through the Web Interface using Google Chrome browser (which I quite like).
f) Started the formatting for standard (as this is all I can do with the 1.5TB drives under the current FW).
G) ProgBar jumped to (the dreaded) 94%.
h) I waited patiently figuring possibly that: 1. these are BIG drives, so formatting might take some time. 2. That the Progress Bar simply wasn't capable of accurately following this.
i) after about an hour, I noticed that the blue light drive activity indicators on the front had both calmed down and that the web page reported completion.
So, it may be possible that some of your problems may be related to the buggy progress bar and that you need to be patient.
-
Pretty much the same thing as the poster above... I formatted them as standard drives (1.05 does not yet support RAID1 1.5tb). The progress bar jumper quickly to 94%, then it took about an hour and a half for the process to finish. Formatting 1.5tb drives is very long! First, the led of the right bay HDD blinked for 45 minutes, then the led of the left bay for the same time. After all was done!
Using FW 1.05, Seagates FW was SD1H.
I guess you just need to be patient.
-
Hi everyone,
Just a quick comment... I've experienced same issue "hangs at 94%" and what finally worked for me was using firefox and disabling antivirus and firewall - then I was finally able to format two 1tb wd hard drives in RAID 1. Hope this helps (This is on a 343)
-
I got this problem with the wizard. But I tried different thing and my RAID1 work now.
(two 500 Gig Sata2 in RAID1 - Mirror)
To solve this problem do the following
1 - Format your disks as Individual Disks (default option in the wizard)
2 - Follow the steps and watch the disk light on the DNS323 during the process
3 - Try to write on each of them with the windows file sharing
4 - If it work, continue to the next step, if not you probably have an other problem
5 - Now format in RAID1 (Menu - Tool / RAID)
6 - After starting the format wait for the process bar to reach 1% and then close all the DNS323 web pages
7 - Unplug the network cable on your DNS323
8 - Now watch carefully the blinking lights on the DNS323
9 - Wait until it the disks lights stop blinking for 10 minutes
10 - Follow the next step ONLY IF THE DISK LIGHT ARE ALWAYS OPEN FOR A LONG PERIOD
11 - Press and hold the Dlink button on the DNS323 for 5 secondes and release it
12 - The power light will flash and the DNS323 will shutdown
13 - After the unit is shutdown open it back and wait 2 minutes for a good power on
14 - Enjoy
Remenber - It's like making microwave popcorn
add me to the list. i had some issues and had to factory reset my box. after the reset, the same HDD's that were working for the last few weeks are now foobar.
i'm using 750GB Seagates (ST3750640NS), the format (RAID 1) with a second pair (not original) was successful on the 1st try. i'm on fw 1.07 and did not change versions or try and do anything else.
USA
DNS-321
2 Seagate 1.5 TB
When I tried to configure the hard drives (No Raid) the application jumped to 94% and stayed there for a while, then became unresponsive. I upgraded the firmware from 1.00 (Came with the product) to 1.01 to 1.02 one right after the other. Although the firmware description didn't say they addressed this particular issue I did it anyway. When I tried to configure it again, the progress bar didn't shoot up to 94% then after sometime, around an hour but I wasn't paying attention to the time, it completed successfully.
PS: I also tried to format the hardrives via external hardrive enclosure first then configure it which didn't work. I saw that on another forum.
On another note: After the configuration successfully completed, it did not map the network drives, nor did the connect option work when trying to connect to the volumes. I had to connect to the volumes (volume_1 and volume_2) manually by mapping the network drives in windows explorer.
\\DNS321devicename\volume_1
\\DNS321devicename\volume_2
I hope this helps.
Hi All,
I recently experienced this 94% format issue while attempting to rebuild a degraded RAID 1 array after replacing the failed hard drive. I was using fw 1.06 with two Seagate 7200.11 500GB hard disks (Model ST3500320AS).
The problem occurred when I logged in and was prompted the format the new disk right away. When I formatted using this prompt the progress would hang at 94%. After doing this a few times I decided to skip the format at logon and go straight to the admin page. I reset the unit to factory default settings and then went to the RAID config page and formatted the new disk. Fortunately the format succeeded this time and I was able to rebuild the array.
Hopefully if anyone else has come across this issue while rebuilding a degraded array, this solution works for you.
I installed a WD Cavier 1.5TB drive and it hangs at 94%. After upgrading to version 1.02, it still hangs. Do I have to upgrade to 1.01 first, then to 1.02?
The drive is brand new out of the box. Did I need to format it first?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
I'd test the drive on a SATA connection to your system and make SURE it's OK with the WD diagnostics first.
Hi,
Just want to post this old topic to share my success in few words:
Use Firefox.. I'm a Opera user, but I was able to format my two hard disks (500GB).
DNS-321, not firmware rollback, nothing. After some fail in IE and Opera, I've tried Firefox and it work!
Peace
