Title: DCS-5222L dead after the latest firmware update
Post by: panikos78 on February 08, 2016, 01:09:31 AM
After the latest firmware upgrade my camera froze up with a red light and is now useless as won't connect to the router or even reset.  The customer service/sales representative in Greece won't help me as camera is out of warranty which means and apparently it's the company policy not to support their products when out of warranty. This means that I have to throw it away the camera. I can't believe that I paid 200 euros for this piece of crap, it barely worked as was poorly supported by MacOS with all the Java updates you have to do to get it work. The company asks you to upgrade the firmware which renders it useless and then will not support the produce. I will never buy another D-Link product in my life.

Try this:
Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.msg163599#msg163599)

Be sure to use wired LAN cables any time for FW upgrades unless you are fully confident in your wireless signal is good to the camera.

I tried it but the camera won't obtain an IP so can't connect to the router. It's basically bricked. Its a solid red light when i switch it on owise if i switch it on with the reset button pressed it's a solid green light. Any other solutions or should i just dump it in the garbage? Why does dlink allow you to update the firmware remotely if it's only going to destroy the hardware? Conveniently to buy more cameras perhaps?

I have a bricked one also original version.

I hit the update button on the app by mistake.  I  quickly turned off the camera and it restarted fine.  Several months later i finally had to power cycle it,  and next restart failed.

The newer 5222lb1 doesn't have the remote feature so that's was a big disappointment when I bought that one.

Did you try the recovery process?

Did you try the recovery process?

I thought i had.

I just tried again. Holding the reset in while powering on,  no blue light but the red light was flashing. Must have been 30 seconds or more, it stopped flashing.  Went solid red.  Finally slipped on holding in reset button with safety pin, red light went away, now a green light of 4 honey combs.  Now to log in info router and see where it is at and if i can access.

Wow!  It's alive!   Tried plugging into laptop directly-no go. Tried wireless, as i thought i had it setup on main router. No go.  Noticed it was behaving like it should,  ir lights,  statuslights turning off.  Moved back to 2nd router wired, and it was finally seen in the list of devices in the router, and is back on my cloud list and is working!  F/w 1.01, same as my other original 5222l i have.  The user log only shows last power cycle information,  nothing is available from before.

Back in business!  Whoot! Javalawyer would be proud.

Mine still doesn't work. I tried plugging it in directly the the PC, i do se some kind of device but i can't access it anywhere. The ip is not the usual 192.168.1.x. The router also doesn't recognise it and doesn't show up.

Do you have any lights?  Solid red?

Plug into router. Push in reset pin and hold.  Power on 5222l. Keep holding reset button in for a long time.

The reset button doesn't work, even if i keep it pressed for a minute or so the camera won't reset. When i switch the camera on it will make the usual turn of the robotic head then there is a solid red light. If i switch off the camera and switch it back on again while the reset button is pressed, there is a flashing red light. When i release the reset button the red light goes off and a solid green network light switches on. In either scenarios the router doesn't recognise the camera even though i have connected it directly the router with more than one cables. I have also tried 2 different routes, an old linksys one and a new belkin one.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Try powering up normally now with network attached...

This was my initial reaction however the Dlink service in Greece said it's is Dlink company policy not to support any of the products that are out of warranty. If was surprised that this was the policy so i complained also to the sales dept and said i would never buy any other Dlink products because it can't be that due to of a firmware update that went wrong i have to through away my camera and said that sorry this is the worldwide policy. If this is not true i am happy to send the camera somewhere outside of Greece for repair and will cover the cost of same. I just want to get this camera to work again.

Try this:

Be sure to use wired LAN cables any time for FW upgrades unless you are fully confident in your wireless signal is good to the camera.

" unless you are fully confident in your wireless signal is good to the camera"

And even then, you are better off going hardwired.

I brought my camera home (just about 6-8 weeks ago) and the first thing it prompted me to do was to upgrade the firmware.....thinking nothing of it, I clicked OK and it proceeded to brick my camera.

Did I mention that the camera was sitting literally within 3 feet of the wireless router?

And none of the emergency restoring help I found online would restore it.  I just returned it to the store and got another, this time not doing the upgrade yet until I could decide if it was worth keeping or not.

At the point I get "you need to upgrade the FW" messages every time I logon to it whether on my home PC or android....and that is scary because if you inadvertantly hit the wrong button, brick city again.  How many times have we all hit the wrong tiny button on our cell phone apps? They should disable the FW upgrade via the android app! Or at least make it more resistant to inadvertent upgrading via wireless.

I am currently waiting for a second power supply from DLink so I can pull the camera down from its mount and take it to my router and wire directly.  Ridiculous to have to do this.
