The following procedure describes how to configure a remote backup between two DNS-325 devices.

Notes

• Both DNS-325 configured during the development of this procedure were running firmware version 1.02
• This procedure assumes the existence of populated data directories on the source DNS-325 and directories on the destination DNS-325 where the backup data will reside.
• A bug in firmware version 1.02 requires the manual reentering of the remote server password in the event of a restart or power outage.  The backup job summary will indicate a failed status if either of these events occur and the remote server password is not re-entered
  

Setup NAT entries

This step is only required if backups will be performed over the Internet. Log into the router web interface and forward ports 22, 873, and 62057 to the DNS0325  internal IP address

Configure the Remote Server

To enable the remote backup service, the remote server needs to be enabled on the destination DNS-325. The destination DNS-325 is where the backup data will reside.

• Log into to the web interface on the remote backup NAS.

• Check the box labeled Enable remote backup service and enter a password of your choice.

Configure Remote Backups

This procedure will identify the directories that will be backed up to the remote (destination) DNS-325. These steps must be performed on the source DNS-325 (i.e. DNS-325 containing the source data to be backed up).

• Log into to the web interface on the source DNS-325 containing the data that needs to be backed up.

• Click the Remote Backups option on the left side of the screen
  
• Click Create
  
• Click Next on the welcome screen
  
• Select NAS to NAS in the Service Type selection and Local to Remote in the Backup direction selection

• Enter a backup name in the Task input and use the Folder Path option to select the data directory that will be backed up.
  
• Click Next

• Enter an IP (not a hostname) in the Remote IP entry.  The IP must be the Internet IP for remote backups or the local network IP for local backups. Enter the password that was previously entered in the Configuring the Remote Server section, check the Enable Encryption checkbox, and click Next

• A Testing message will display and if the IP, NAT entries (for Internet backups), and password are correct, the following screen should display with a Remote Path dropdown. Select the destination directory on the remote NAS and click Next

• If necessary, select the required Schedule Mode and whether or not to run the backup job now.
  
  
  • If the backup job contains a substantial volume of data, using a remote connection will take a long time to complete. The initial backup should be performed over a local network to minimize the initial copy time. To perform a backup over a local network, temporarily change the Remote IP entry to the local network IP. Remember to change the IP to the remote address prior to performing a remote backup job.
    
  • If many jobs are going to be created one after another it is wise to NOT run the backups because running backups will prevent subsequent jobs from being created until they are completed.
    
  
  
  
• Click Next
  

Schedule Settings

• Complete this step by reviewing the summary and click Finish. The backups can be run manually in the Remote Backups screen by clicking the Backup Now icon.
