DCS-930L severe hardware issue
« on: January 13, 2013, 06:45:16 AM »

From italian usenet newsgroup it.comp.hardware:

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/it.comp.hardware/fRf0o6OHxQQ/2VcHPFCGovIJ

Ho seguito le indicazioni di Roberto e questa sera ho iniziato ad
analizzare il sensore cmos delle ipcam dcs 930 dlink.
Il problema come ben saprete è questo, difetti sul video a forma di linee
orizzontali: http://i50.tinypic.com/2rr9bg0.jpg .
La sezione, credo, filtrante sul cmos è inesistente. Così ho collegato un
condensatore da 470uF sui piedini del cmos, molto difficili da
individuare: http://i46.tinypic.com/wujn1u.jpg .
Questo è il risultato, linee scomparse: http://i46.tinypic.com/262xy4w.jpg

Google translate:
I followed the directions of Roberto and this evening I started to
analyze the CMOS sensor of ipcam dlink dcs 930.
The problem is that as you well know, defects in the form of horizontal lines on the screen
.
Section, I believe, on the CMOS filter is non-existent. So I connected a
470uF capacitor on pin cmos, very difficult to
identify: http://i46.tinypic.com/wujn1u.jpg.
This is the result, lines disappeared:

Is there any difference between DCS-930 and DCS-930L?

DCS-932L same issue ( http://www.mediasmartserver.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MyDLink-A.jpg ) too.

The DCS-930 is the predecessor to the DCS-930L and was discontinued. Two separate models.

DCS-930L sure.
DCS-932L sure.
DCS-930 under investigation.

So, you are attributing the horizontal lines users are reporting on the DCS-930L and DCS-932L to a possible hardware defect?  :-\

From what I understood the capacitor is not defective, there is no capacitor to filter the circuit.
If this is true D-Link should have a free recall to put the capacitor, since if I do that I'll lose my warranty!!

What is seams is there is no capacitor to stabilize the CCD in such low light conditions...

Me? I should ask it to the (O(OP))... but I think is a bad hardware design, weak filter.

Thanks. Wasn't sure if he was replacing a component or adding something that wasn't there to start with.

The 930L and the 932L are not identical, but VERY similar. Can i mod the 930L the same way? Here is the two compared;

Within what range uF can I use? I see the mod is done with a 470uF.

And her is how the camera is put together... for those interested.

C38 is minus - (GND), L8 is plus +. I'm trying 330uF 16V.

Okay, now both the the 930L, and the 932L is modded pr. tip from Freeride. IT WORKS!
PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING THIS A STICKY, MODERATOR!
Almost all the horizontal noise is gone.
I cant believe dlink let so poor products out the door!
And people have been complaining over this this noise problem for so long, and then it turns out to be a poor product design, so easy to fix!

Anyway here is the mod done:
930L

932L

Need better photos and details of hows to modify it. Looks like you soldered a cap to the board? I would hate for users to just solder something to the board and blow it up.  ::)

Also that breaking into the case or modifying will void and  any current standing warranties.  :o

If You read the whole thread and click all the links, it should be pretty clear what is done.

To recap;
DCS-930L and 932L has severe noise problems in the picture in low/no light.
Someone found out the problem was that Dlink made a poor design and omitted noisefiltering the cmos signal in low light, thus introducing a lot of noise in the picture.
To rectify this, it is neccesary to solder a capacitor between c38(MINUS) and L8(PLUS) . For details, see pictures in this thread, AND BE CAREFULL TO GET + and minus THE CORRECT WAY! All necessary info is in this thread.

DISCLAIMER; IF YOU OPEN YOUR IPCAMERA THE WARRANTY IS BYE BYE. DONT BLAIM ME OR OTHER CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS THREAD IF YOU MESS UP.  ANY AND ALL MODIFICATIONS TO YOUR IPCAMERA IS DONE ON YOUR OWN RISK.

Good luck guys!

Is there a certain ferrad cap value to use?

Reason for posting here in the forums is that links can and do eventually become dead. Trying to keep local information here on the forums with out too much remote linking.
