Synology DS 213j not showing up in network
« on: January 19, 2015, 12:44:50 PM »

This may be related to me being a "noob", but Iīm having what seems to me as a really weird issue. Iīve tried googling around, but so far I havenīt found one single instance of a similar problem out there.

I just bought a D-Link DIR 868L, to speed up my home network (I have up until this point used a cheap "all-in-one" modem/router supplied by my broadband provider). More specifically, I need the higher speed and quality to get proper use of my NAS, a Synology DS 213j.

I have confirmed several times that the problem lies not in my NAS. It shows up in my network and works perfectly fine when using my old router (besides the fact that the low speed of my old router makes streaming movies, backing up data and so on a real pain).

Now, hereīs my problem:

When hooking everything up with my new D-Link router, my iOS and OSX devices work like a charm (iPhone 6, iPad Mini, MacBook Pro, and Apple TV). They are all visible in the network when I log in to my D-Link 868L, and they communicate as they should. Streaming from my iPhone to Apple TV works great now, for example, while it lagged like crazy with my old router. But when it comes to my Synology NAS, something fishy is going on...or perhaps I should say is NOT going on. The NAS just doesīt show up in the network at all. Itīs plugged in correctly, and the LAN-light on the NAS confirms that itīs hooked up to...well...something. But when trying to find it in the network - nothing. When logging in to the router, itīs like the NAS just isnīt there. And I canīt access the DSM (the NASīs operating system) through the browser interface. Since I canīt see it through the router interface, I have no idea if the 868L has changed the NASīs IP adress somehow. As if this washīt strange enough, it IS possible to access the NAS from my Mac, as a shared storage unit via the afp-protocol, within the finder environment. But this happened more or less by accident (as I said, I am a "noob" here) and I canīt figure out how my Mac found the NAS, since the D-Link 868L doesīt seem to recognize it. I successfully streamed a couple of video clips this way, but the connection behaves strangely. I canīt disconnect, or everything just hangs. And if the connection is lost, I canīt seem to re-establish it. I canīt access the NAS at all through my iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, which was the primary purpose for my purchasing the 868L in the first place... :-/ Iīve tried rebooting everything (the NAS as well as the router) a number of times, but to no avail.

What the heck is going on here??? What to do???

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Is your NAS set for a static IP address on the device? If so remove the static IP address:
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Swap out the LAN cable between the router and NAS to test...

Hardware version: A1

Firmware version: 1.09

"Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router". Maybe I don't quite understand how you mean that I should go about this, but it seems that you mean that I should do it in the router web interface, by applying this DHCP reservation to all the devices found? The thing is that the router won't even find the NAS at all. It's not there. Not listed anywhere. It's like it isn't even connected. This is the whole problem to begin with... :-/

Hmm...pressed the reset button on the NAS...this seemed to solve the problem... The NAS is now visible on the routerīs web page. :-P

"On the device" By "device", you are referring to the NAS? Perhaps it was set as static...since I couldīt access it I couldīt find out... :-P Iīm gonna go ahead and try to log in to my NAS through the web interface...wish me luck! :-P

Usually if a Static IP address is present on the NAS or any client connected devices, they will not appear on the routers web page. Thats fine if you know the IP address of the device before hand. I use a static on mine. You could set up a static IP address on the NAS if you want to if your NAS doesn't need any router management or processing. I.e. 192.168.0.213, or 192.168.0.2, 192.168.21 or 192.168.0.13. Static IPs should be out side of the routers default IP address pool of 192.168.0.100 thru .199.

Good luck.

Ok!

It seems to be working now. What a huge relief! (*knocking on wood) And what a performance boost compared to my old, bottom-of-the-line, all-in-one router! Now I can actually use my NAS. Nice. :-)

Are there any notable benefits to using a static IP adress?

Thanks! :-)

Also have the same IP address that never changes and since some devices don't need any router management or much internet access, Static can be used. Also doesn't take up any router resources.

Glad it's working now. Enjoy.
