DIR 645 and ADSL Modem/Router for Internet
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:49:18 AM »

Hi there chaps.

I'm trying to connect my new DIR 645 to the internet via another ADSL modem/router, but having no luck.  The modem/router I want to use is that supplied with my virgin media account in the UK, a D-Link 2640R. I obviously want to turn off the wireless radio on the modem/router, but if anyone else can please help me with what default options should be changed in the DIr 645 to connect properly?

For example, does the 2640R or the 645 become the DHCP server? Do I need to change the default address of the 645? Does the 645 use a DHCP internet connection or PPoE (ie is it the 645 or the modem/router that controls the ADSL internet login details?), does the modem/router connect to the 645's Internet port, or LAN port?

Any help appreciated - I've been working on this for a couple of days without luck and tearing my hair out.

My 645 has firmware 1.01 dated July 2011. Note, I think all adsl in the UK is ppoa, so I'm not even sure the dir 645 can control the adsl login, as it only appears to have a 'ppoe' option...?

Many thanks and any help hugely appreciated!

Petrov.

If the 645 doesn't have a PPPoA option and your ISP requires that, I would see if the ISP modem has a DMZ, which most Dlink modems do have. Put the IP address that the 645 is getting in the DMZ of the modem then everything on the 645 should work. If not then I would get into a wireless AP device like a DAP model from Dlink as having 2 routers on the same line will cause connection problems. I might call your local DLink office and ask if they are going to support the PPPoA option. Any other ISP options there besides DSL?

Thanks furry, much appreciated. If it is the case that this router doesnt support ppoa, then I have to used the existing modem/router to control the adsl login... Weird that dlink would supply a router in the uk market which doesn't work with the vast majority of adsl connections in the uk.

Anyway, is it correct that I should have the modem/router act as dhcp server then? Which 645 port do I connect the modem/router into- the Internet port or the Ethernet port?

Finally, willl the LAN ports on the 645 work if I disable it's dhcp functionality?

ThankS again,
Petrov.

Yes have the ISP modem act as the DHCP server. Check to see if it has a DMZ, if so then input the IP address that the 645 gets from the modem and put it in the DMZ. Then you shouldn't have any connection issues.

If the DMZ is available, use the WAN port on the back of the 645 to connect to the modem. If not then connect the modem to any LAN port on the 645, you'll need to shut off the DHCP server on it and most of the other options too, like firewall, filters and such as they are tied to the WAN port and don't get used when using the 645 in this manor. There is a sticky over on the DGL 4500 forum about turning a router into an AP. I hope the modem has a DMZ. And, yes, the LAN ports in back will work for other devices.

Fuzzy, whenever I try to change the default ip address on the 645, i can no longer access the router without doing a hard reset. I've turned off firewall and rebooted the pc, but when I try to change it to 192.168.1.1 I can no longer see the web based setup. When I run ipconfig it also is blank next to 'default gateway'. Why oh why?

first off does the ISP modem have a DMZ?

If you change the 645's IP address, you need to change your PC network address to reflect the new IP address string your using on the the 645, so the PC needs a temp static ip address of 192.168.1.something other than 1. Then you can access the 645s web page.

Thanks -yes, the modem has a DMZ and firewall option. The 645 was assigned the 1.7 address suffix, which I entered into the DMZ line. It appeared to work, but I'd not set a password for wireless, and when I wen back to try and access the web based login for the 645 it was unreachable...

Fuzzy, thanks again for your help, I know you have no reason to help some stranger on the Internet so it's much appreciated, ta.

And I presume your suffix for the pc network I address is the same? IF so it should access the 645 router if you input 1.7 in to the browser.

What IP address are you getting on the PC?

So the 645 is hooked up to the 2640 modem/router now, and the 645 is showing Internet access via its glowing globe symbol. And in the system stats in the web based setup for the 645 it confirms that it has Internet access. But when I connect to the 645 wirelessly it says no internet access. Bah.

To access the 645 I still do it through 192.168.0.1.  I had actually changed the modem/router to 192.168.1.1, so I didn't need to change the645 in the end.  The pc that I had been accessing the routers with did not have the same address as the 645....why should it?

Thanks again,

Petrov.

Your pc should have the same address string as the 645 if it's connecting to it now. The PCs network properties should be set to automatic for both wired and wireless, it should gain an IP address from the 645 and should be in the 192.169.1.some range. Does the wired connection work with the PC to the 645? Try rebooting the PC after you connect to the 645.
