I just replaced the two RAID 1 drives in my DNS-323 with larger drives. I needed to read a file off the old drives so I connected one of them to a spare SATA port. The bios sees the drive and the Device Manager indicates it is properly installed but it does not show up in Windows Explorer. Why?
Does the DNS-323 use a file system incompatible with Windows 7 (NTFS)? If so, how does one recover data from a DNS-323 RAID 1 array should one of the drives or the DNS323 fail?

Hey I did that last night, just go here http://www.ext2fsd.com/ (http://www.ext2fsd.com/) and DL ext2fsd and install it. start the program and assign it a drive letter.

If a drive fails in a RAID1 array, the data should be accessible exactly the same way as it was immediately prior to the failure of the drive - that, after all, is the "raison d'etre" of RAID.
If the DNS-323 were to fail, then the data should be available, from your back up - assuming that you have one.

I downloaded and installed ext2fsd. I ran it and was able to assign a drive letter to the ex-DNS323 drive. However, when I try to access the files on the drive using Windows Explorer, a dialog pops up stating it is necessary to format the drive. Obviously, formatting is the last thing I want to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thats odd it never asked me that question. I think I just selected the largest partition and assigned a drive letter to it. Try it with the other drive and see if it reacts the same way. I used the right drive, not sure if it makes a difference?

My error, I installed ext2fsd wrong. It works perfectly and I was able to recover the data I needed. Even more important, I now have confidence that a RAID 1 array will indeed provide a means of recovering data if one of the two drives dies.

I know this is an old thread but recently my DNS 323 began acting up (middle button just flashes) and am wondering if I can use this same method by putting my drive in an external box and accessing it?
