Title: DIR-645 losing connection wired/wireless
Post by: TheTech on January 14, 2012, 03:42:47 PM
I have a new DIR-645 that at night when we are sleeping looses connection with the cable modem. I have a older DIR-655 that works flawless. I was getting the new modem to get better wireless reception which it does, but i need the network to keep connected 24/7. Any help would be appreciated.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Hi
version is 1.00
Stand alone Modem
Cox cable-Motorola SB6120
We have a laptop,netbook,3 android phones and an android tablet a WII and Xbox360, not all connected at the same time though.

I checked all other settings you mentioned and the only thing I had to change was the endpoint independent and added the IP's to the reserved list

I haven't ran into this with any other router I have setup I am beginning to think it is a compatibly issue with the modem.

Shouldn't be, I have 657 and have testing it on a 6120, 21 and now on a 80. There the same platform as far as FW goes.

Swap cables out to be sure? Cat 6 is recommended.

Hey how does the 6180 compare to the 6120? My main reason for getting the 645 was to get better coverage. Maybe I should check into the 657 as well but I do like that the 645 has a firewall.

the 80 and 8 channel bonding. 20 and 21 are 4.

All routers have firewalls.

I am going to return the router. I am a computer tech and have looked through all settings. there isn't anything that should make it loose connection.

I will, Any recommendation? I currently have a DIR-655 and was just looking for better wireless coverage.

What kind of coverage are you looking for?
Any need for 5Ghz radio on your devices?
What modes are you using on the 655? This will dictate range as well.

One thing you might consider is using a DAP model AP with your 655.

We have a 1 story house with a basement and would like to have whole house coverage. I think we can get the coverage with just a router. the 655 does cover the house but the 645 had a stronger signal so there where fewer drops
current modes

WIRELESS LAN

Wireless Radio :Enabled
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b
Channel Width :20MHz
Channel :9
WISH : Active
Wi-Fi Protected Setup :Enabled/Configured

I would change the mode from Mixed all to Mixed G and N.

I would also recommend using the 655 has a host router and use the 645 as an AP.  ;)

If I can get the 655 to cover the house that it my goal. I cant justify the cost of the 645 if I am going to just use it as an AP.

The 645 acting as a AP would only ensure maximum coverage and stability working in concert with the 655. You can do vs versa too.

For my set up, I use the 655 as the host router at one end of the house and another AP towards the other end in the living room.

Placement is crucial if your going to have the 655 be the only item servicing WiFi. Central is best. However be aware that other things will impede signal coverage, building materials and external interferences.

How big is your house? Sq ft?

It is just roughly 1500SqFt sheet rock and wood. and the 655 is centrally located

1500 feet should be ok to cover by one router I would agree.
Any other wifi routers near by?

there are several wireless routers around but what gets me is that even the hard wired connections drop out also.

Can you see if there are any log entries dealing with disconnections or reconnections on the WAN side. I just helped a guy on a 815 who found out that the lease time on the modem to router was always expiring at 59 minutes. Is supposed to be longer. I'm wondering if possibly something is happening between the ISP modem and router.

OK I can check that after work. I would really like to keep it as the through put is allot better that my 655 both wired and wireless.

OK we might try and get with you to do that. I thought about trying the 657 but you said they run the same platform as far as the firmware so I would probably have the same issue.
