I thought cable modems only updated firmware on reboots?  Maybe that's not true though.

They do update on reboot, first it downloads the firmware than it installs it and than it reboots. Hope this helps.

Well I meant that it only downloads and installs the update on a manual reboot, when establishing communication with the ISP.  If that wasn't the case, wouldn't one occasionally see internet drop outs when those firmware updates happen?  Maybe they do it at off times.  I bet Trikein knows...

Apparently they can update and auto reboot. Was just done to mine 18+ hours ago...I had no hand in the reboot either.

As furrynutz stated above your ISP can reboot your modem at any time. I have had this happened to my cable box and modem.

Yea, they can do it anytime they want, usually its rare though. When their getting a firmware ready for finalization, they will look at certain areas and push it out in chunks. Usually they will monitor and look for any problems for about 48hrs, and if so, will revert back. As for the modem losing connection as it updates, yea, everytime. Technically speaking though, theres two kinds of firmware update though. Well..actually theres about 5, but I will stick to the kind my ISP uses. One is when you power up, it makes sure the the firmware that is in place is compatible with the network in the area. That isn't to say that is the LATEST firmware, just above what ever "bar" they happen to set. Eventually they get around to moving the bar up to the latest tested firmware, which causes the modem to update the next time it sync up to your ISP. This could be on a reboot, or network test. The second kind is manually pushed to the modem.  This is usually done when they make a change to the network and the firmware update is needed to be compatible. This is probably what happened in Furry's case. Its hard to say. One thing I can tell you, its not as clear cut as the ISP's lead you to believe. This isn't out of dishonestly though, most of it is the average representative doesn't know, or he does know but its so damn technical, it would take a year to explain it.

Hahaha. 4500 been doing great. I actually took a tip from someone here and put it on top of my Silverstone case (with two case fans on the top) and its been keeping it nice and cool.

But I had a idea..its really crazy, and I have no idea how I would do it, and if I am allowed to do it..but I was thinking of building my own forum. Try to invite some people from here, AVS, DSLM, BC, SC, OC, and other large mainstream tech forums. Try to have a hardcore Geek think tank that could be a fall back, just for other geeks, when they run into problems there trying to fix for other people they can't figure out. I actually know a few people that run forums, who could probably set me up. Hmmmmm..thoughts?

My thoughts hmmm, sounds great but it would be challenge getting people to go over there but yea I like the idea. What I do to keep my DGL 4500 cool is that I use the mount it came with and place it on top of that and it remains cool. I love my DGL 4500 can't wait for the next generation for some reason.

Yea, the only new one so far is the DIR-632 which is odd. I mean I like the 8 ports, but if your someone who needs 8 ethernet ports, you most likly already have a switch. And if you have a switch, why upgrade just to safe room? Just seems too middle of the road for my tastes.

The 632 is a nice looking unit. Hmmm, could be a preview of things to come. I think the 8 ports is a bit over kill but on the other hand having those ports could come in handy for those who might not have additional switches and for those who might need connects at the router too. I've got a 24 port switch however still connect both xbox's direct to the back of the 4500.  ;D

Just read the Data Spec on the 632, wonder why they didn't include 1Gb ports? There only 100Mb.

Bahhh. I got to vent here. I just tried getting the new Thunderbird program set up on my PC, and I am sorry, that thing is the biggest POS I have ever used. The autoconfig figure is more fail then UAC. ::kicks it:: Even when deleting the entry from  the :config it restores from back up and forces my incoming to IMAP. If I try to override it, it still tries to use the authentication and ports of IMAP. ::rages::
