DIR-857 QoS keeps disabling itself (among other issues)
« on: July 20, 2012, 02:51:06 PM »

For years I've been running my network on a DIR-655, which died a few days ago. I've replaced it with a DIR-857 and have run into a number of problems (router frequently rebooting itself, losing time settings, etc.).

I think I've got most of the issues resolved but a couple are still plaguing me:

QoS will not stay enabled. I am using a Motorola Docsis 3 SB6121 modem. The firmware for the router states 'Measured Uplink Speed :   Not Estimated.' When I enable QoS it then states 'Your broadband internet connection has surpassed the uplink measurement requirement.'

The router will reboot and initially qill show Stream Engine as active but after a few minutes it will then turn QoS/Stream Engine back off.

I'm running firmware 1.01 and have tried everything - rebooting, resetting to factory defaults, etc etc. I don't have any specialized settings other than having my wireless security set up, WISH turned on and the router set to sync with a time server (which originated because the router was constantly losing it's time settings).

Anyone have any ideas?

One other issue that I'm having is that my DNS-323 will not connect to this router at gigabit speeds, only at 100mbps (I have a thread about this issues in the DNS-323 forum as well, although my unit was connecting to the DIR-655 at 1000mbps just fine).

What ISP speeds up and down do you pay for?
DLink is aware of a QOS issue if your uplink is 2Mb or faster:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=46674.0

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router and wired devices, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using Comcast. According to speedtest I get 35mbps down and 5 mbps up on average.

I was aware of the 2mbps up limit from reading the threads here but I hadn't seen anyone else with the issue of QoS actually disabling itself.

At the moment I'm trying out a Linksys EA4500 but I can't say I like it too much so far. I may go back to the D-Link and try some of your suggestions.

I can't believe that the DIR-857 has been out for this long and yet they haven't ironed out these issues with the firmware. I also can't believe they shipped a product with that low of a limit on the upload speed for the QoS.

There is some debate on weather having a cap on QoS is a bad or good thing.

Let us know on what the status is on this. in most cases, if one devices or maybe a few are online at the same time and are just going general internet, then QoS may not be needed and can be disabled.

Once again, thank you for following up.

I ended up not liking the Linksys too much and returned it. I'm using the DIR-857 but still having issues.

I've had time to implement some of your suggestions but not all (haven't had time to set up static IP addressees yet, and frankly it bothers me that I have to do this. The DIR-655 never had these issues).

I'm still having issues with the router randomly rebooting itself. It seems like it will work fine for most of a day, or maybe two days, and then it will just start rebooting itself several times an hour. And this is not even under any kind of heavy use.

I've seen people mention a 1.02 firmware but the D-Link website only has the 1.01 listed. Is the 1.02 available or was it officially released and then pulled for some reason?

I'm still having the issue with QoS refusing to stay enabled as well (not that it would be doing much for me, given that my upload speed is well above 2mbps).

I'm wondering if perhaps I got a bum unit and should exchange it?

I highly recommend setting reserved IP addreses ON the router for ALL devices, even though it may seem that it should work either way, having reserved IP addresses on the router prevents IP conflicts and ensures each devices gets it own IP address every time it connects and helps in troubleshooting.

Sent you a PM.

Review the new FW post.

The router was continuing to act up (rebooting itself) so I went ahead and updated to the new firmware.

I cannot speak as to the overall performance or stability of the new firmware as I've only had it installed for a short time but unfortunately I have to report one very nasty/annoying bug: It constantly, and I mean constantly kicks me out of the routers UI/settings page and either back to the login screen or an error/unable to load screen. It's a race to get settings saved and half the time even hitting save fails and sends me to the 'unable to load' type of screen and I have to log back in and try again. Extremely annoying and frustrating.

QoS also still will not enable. Perhaps it is some hard coded issue where it simply will not enable due to my 5mbps upload speed?

I did go ahead and set up reserved IP's for all of the devices on my network (4 wired, 1 wireless (iPhone) and one both wired/wireless (laptop).

I'll be loading my 857 up here soon to see whats going on.   ::)

I have a DIR-857 and lately also upgraded to the 1.0.2 firmware. Before upgrading (and after upgrading) it has been crashing constantly. For me it seems like the wired connections continue to work but the wifi is definitely completely gone each time it crashes. It was not like this when I first got it but it's possible it happens under heavy load as recently as I have been transferring a lot of data through it - both to the USB drive that was connected (and which has now since been disconnected to try to rule it out as a problem) and through the WAN connection.

I have just disabled all the QoS settings and will see how things go.

So far I am totally unimpressed with this piece of junk. I previously had a Linksys and had a much better experience.

Link>Welcome!
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
So far others are not seeing what your experiencing.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I wanted to issue an update: I ended up having to trade the original DIR-857 in for another unit as it became increasingly problematic. I've not had many problems with the new unit so I'm fairly confident that the original had a hardware defect. I'm still running the factory installed firmware (1.0?) and will update it at some point in the not-too-distant future, hopefully with no issues.

Glad that you got one thats working. I recommend not updating unless you are exhibiting problems that are resolved by what newer firmware mentions that they seem to fix. If your running well at the moment, keep what is loaded. Your not missing out on anything.

Enjoy.
