DIR-657 drops WAN IP when sending WOL packet.
« on: October 03, 2016, 10:46:41 AM »

I have my home server set up to WOL. I use a phone app to accomplish this. Most times I have no problem. However, there are times that when I send the packet my server wakes up but then my router (DIR-657) looses the IP address from cable provider. I am able to access the router settings from home and the IP address is set all zero's. I have tried resetting just the router power but this does nothing. I then reset both the router and modem and this so far has corrected the issue but now I have a totally new IP address assigned. I then have to reset all my devices to this new address. Also, when I am away from home and this happens I can no longer access my home network. My server is now running all day and I have no way of putting it back to sleep nor can I access my IP cams.
One thing to note is that so far this has only happened when I am away from home (again not every time. Sometimes it goes through no problem) When I am home and send packet while on my wireless connection this has yet to happen. Help! What could be causing this?

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites
  • By-pass the main host router and check internet connection by connecting a wired LAN PC directly to the ISP modem to verify connection access and ISP speeds.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on a Router

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn on or off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
>WAN and LAN Connection Rates and ISP Speeds FAQ
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

Try this:
Go to SETUP>PARENTAL CONTROL
and chek :
None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP
Use the DNS servers provided by your ISP, or enter your preferred DNS servers.

When i used manual static, didint worked. Device Needs not reboot. But Manual turn power off for >20s.
after i  chek :

Thank you for your replies. My Parental settings are already set as you suggested and as for the other, well as much as I appreciate all the suggestions that is just way too much to deal with to try and troubleshoot this issue. It would be in my better interest to just buy a new router.

However, I have started waking my computer before going to work to be sure nothing goes wrong. I can then do what I need once at work and then put it back to sleep. I have also been using a different phone app to send the magic packet and so far since doing this I have not run into my initial problem. My best guess at this point is that the other app I was using caused my problem. Perhaps the way it was sending the packet (if they can be sent differently) caused the router to lock up. Thank you again.

Glad it's working. Also it would be helpful next if you could give feedback to the questions presented so we can get a better idea of your system and situation. It helps us give better feedback and suggestions to try to help you fix the problem.

Enjoy.
