I've been searching for a way to access a USB drive connected to the USB port on the router, without installing the Shareport software. Maybe this info was posted before, but I could not find it on these forums.  In case anyone else wants to know, here's how to do it.

How to map a USB drive attached to DIR827 from Windows Explorer:
In Windows Explorer, go to TOOLS > MAP NETWORK DRIVE
Choose a letter for the drive (use the last ones, V to Z. Avoid mapping to the next available letter, especially if you choose 'Reconnect at Log-on', as this could cause conflicts when you add and remove other removable drives.)

For Folder, enter this:
\\192.168.0.1\Storage(A0)
or, if that does not work:
\\192.168.0.1\Storage(B0)

I assume that these names are reserved in the router for the USB port and for the SD card slot. However, they seem to be assigned randomly. In my case, initially the USB drive was B0. After a reboot of the router, it was A0. Each time it changes, you'll have to re-map the drive as described here. That sucks.
Click Finish, and you're done. The new drive should now appear in Windows Explorer as a Network drive. You can use it as any other drive on your PC. Although transfer rates will not be great.

Because the name seems to change after each router reboot between Storage(A0) and Storage(B0), I would avoid enabling the 'Reconnect at Log-on' option. Rather, map it manually as described here only when you need to transfer something to/from the drive.

If you simply want to see the content of the drive, or transfer a file to your PC, you can just enter
\\192.168.0.1\Storage(A0) or \\192.168.0.1\Storage(B0) in your web browser window.
You can play movies, mp3s, view pics, and download files from the drive.

For some newer routers like the DIR-865L series, using the (Storage(A0)) may not work, however looking at the assigned storage name that the router gives the connected devcie, using this in place of the (Storage(A0)) seems to work as I was able to Map the drive using \\192.168.0.1\Host Name Given By Router format.

Mine happens to be \\192.168.0.1\PI_DIR865L_250USB.
Is is partial user naming of the volume on the drive and the other is the naming seen when connected to the router. I think the router tryied to determine the make and model of the drive and uses it in the naming convention. You can see the router naming convention under Setup/Storeage for those routers that have STORAGE options. Older DIR series router might not support this function thus will not be displayed. Mine is listed as PI. So mapping and SharePort seem to combine the two names into a unique name for mapping and for SharePort to use.

I saw this name when using Shareport for the first time with the drive. I successfully mapped the drive in Explorer using the above format.

So use SharePort to see the entire name of the connected drive and then try to map to that name. It should work.

FurryNutz, could you provide some more information on exactly how to do this? I would REALLY like to be able to access the USB port on my router without using Shareport, but I haven't been able to make this work.

Router: DIR-655A, 1.35NA firmware
USB Device: Seagate GoFlex 250MB
OS: Windows XP SP3

I first tried to map the USB drive using \\192.168.0.1\Storage(A0) and \\192.168.0.1\Storage(B0), as described in the previous post, but neither of these worked. So I uninstalled and re-installed Shareport (on a different computer) and when I re-attached the drive, it was labelled as "VID [0x0BC2] PID [0x2000] 0" in Shareport. So I tried to map the drive using \\192.168.0.1\VID [0x0BC2] PID [0x2000] 0, and this was also not successful. FWIW, I'm able to access the drive using Shareport (from a different computer).

Questions:
1) Has anyone successfully mapped a drive this way using the DIR-655?
2) If so, do you see what I'm doing wrong?
3) You said "you can see the router naming convention under Setup/Storeage". I assume that you're talking about the router web interface, but I don't see this section. Any more info?

Not sure if Rev A routers will support the Mapping function with out SharePort. I have a Rev B and haven't had a chance to test this out. Most of this mapping comes from newer routers such as the Amplifi and Cloud series routers which support Mapping with out SP.

How is the drive being listed in SP when you connect to it? There should be a name displayed. Look for this name in SP. Post a picture of what SP looks like when it's connected here. We use places like photobucket or imageshack to store and link pictures too.

It's possible that Rev As just wont support this mapping option.

The value in SP (VID ...) doesn't work for mapping the drive, even if I quote the string. Any suggestions are welcome, but the more I play around with SP the more it feels kind of half-baked (e.g. it just locked up my computer when I tried to disconnect from the USB drive). I think I'll be looking elsewhere for a network drive solution.

Does \\192.168.0.1\VID_PID_0 work?

You might want to try a USB to LAN adapter as a work around.

Here is solution.

1\ Connect USB drive directly to all pc/laptop it will be working
2\ Assign letter in Administrator tool \ drive managmenet ,(letter between m-z)
3\ Format your usb in ntfs or if You have no time to do it just delete all files You don't recognise (dlink makes this files - sorry I forgot to wrote down their names). Has to be enabled option to show hidden fand system files.
4\ Write down You dir-645 setup, but not as "safe config" but rather write on notepad, or just make printscreen.
5\ Flash Your DIR-645 with new software: http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008detail.asp
6\ Change dlink setup as You like but not recover from config, change config manually
7\ Attach USB drive to Dir-645
8\ Map it anyway You want - shareport or explorer. From this time on every reboot letter assigned to the drive will be same. Also you will not see: drive_A1 or drive_B1.
You will see full name or hardrive as set by manufacturer, for example: ST932042_3AS_3F781 (seagate one)

I'm flashing in 4 step because previous firmware was loosing connection often

Was this for a WiFi connection?

Not only. And rather for lan. But it was also connected to jumbo frame and some network card driver parameters itself. Anyway right now works perfect, no letter changes, no loosing connection to usb hdd expecially durring large file transfer or verification after transfer. All works smooth. Also new firmware fix up my voip errors (nat disconnection of incoming calls after 32 secunds).

There is a sticky here the FAQ Library regarding Jumbo Frames. I don't think it's recommended to use them unless your connected with a external Gb switch and doing heavy traffic data management and flow.
