Intrusion Protection System (IPS) performance question
« on: September 17, 2018, 08:45:02 PM »

I had to download some files from an FTP server.  But I couldn't download any files.  Then I remembered I had this same problem a while back and I solved it by disabling IPS.  I forgot that I had re-enabled this Intrusion Protection System.  So I was not able to download from FTP sites until I remembered this issue and so I disabled IPS.  When I was finished downloading I decided to turn it back on.  When I turned it on, a message appeared stating:

"Enabling IPS/IDS would result in performance drop.  Please confirm"

I'd like to know how much of a performance drop and how to measure it.  But first I'd like to know how important is it to enable this feature?  How successful is it at detecting and preventing malicious attacks?  If it's not very effective why not turn it off and reap the performance benefits?

Some basic info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrusion_detection_system

I presume any additional prevention system may have some impact on networking to some degree as traffic has to be inspected, looked at, check and see if it's a thread or not based on a data base and other factors. All of this has to happen very fast.

D-Link will have more information regarding this. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this.

We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.
