BT folders are unlocked?
« on: August 09, 2010, 03:31:45 PM »

Have been playing around with my DNS 323 for a couple of weeks now. I have enabled Dlink's Bittorrent addon. I notice that my Bittorrent folder is unlocked and there is no option to let only users access it.

When I have friends over for a LAN party etc, I don't want them accessing my BT files (or even viewing them). Is there a way to lock the bt folder?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

When you say it is unlocked, is the folder shared with no restrictions or do you access the folder from within the Volume_1 (or 2) share?

If it's the later remove or protect the Volume_1 (or 2) share and optionally share and protect the BT directory.

The folder is shared with no restrictions. I have 2 drives in a RAID 1. So I have only Volume_1. Only a folder inside Volume_1 named "Data" is shared. I have usernames and passwords for two users who can use access them. But if I choose all accounts to be able to access the "Data" folder, then even "Data" is accessible with no restrictions.

I assume that if "Data" folder is set to be a samba share for all accounts, it should be accessible for all usernames only. But what I see is that "Data" is accessible without even asking for username & password.

I have fun_plug installed. So I have a "sshd" as a third user.

In firmware version 1.08, you will be prompted for credentials even on shares set with "all accounts" access. People here usually don't want that new functionality, sounds like you do. For me, it doesn't bother me :)

@jamieburchell: How bout the BT folders? If the BT folders are locked in 1.08, I will go back to 1.08 firmware from the 1.09 I currently have.

1.09 firmware is 1.08 firmware with online backup.

I don't use BT so I don't know what the DNS-323 does with this folder. I assumed it just creates a standard folder that you can share if you want to, and in that case it would follow the same rules as any other shared folder on the box I.e. Prompt for credentials.

When BT is enabled, a folder Volume_1/BT is created and is a samba share with no restrictions. And I can't change the permissions on the share! I will post a screenshot once I get home.

Anybody else notice this problem? Any solutions?

Normal. Either replace it with Transmission or just move the files after they download.

Aw thats bad news! I can move the files after the download is complete. But what about the incomplete downloads?

I have been trying to install Transmission. Couldn't get it to work. I should try harder!! :) :)

Transmission shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to get up and running and is (IMO) significantly better as it uses fewer resources.

Incomplete downloads are basically useless and IIRC are locked anyway until completed. Not sure why they would be an issue for you.

Don't do that when I'm drinking coffee and over my keyboard!  :o ;D  Now I have to clean the keyboard. ;)

There's probably a market for "accident/splash proof" keyboards, especially for those of us who have such videos....

What, did I go too far?  :D
