lag spike every minute
« on: April 23, 2020, 02:36:22 PM »

Hello
I just got the D-Link DWA 171 AC600 MU-MIMO USB wireless adapter for use on my desktop. About every minute I get a 3000 ms lag spike. I tested with my laptop connected to the same network in the same area with no problems.
I've googled and downloaded the most up to date driver for this adapter with the correct hardware version "C1" and the drivers for my motherboard.

I've also tried disabling the WLAN autoconfig as detailed here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/how-to-disable-wlan-autoconfig-for-proper-internet/fd8da170-5c68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

I've also searched this and other forums for similar problems and tried many solutions with no luck. Wondering if anyone else here has had this problem and found a solution. Thank you

Be sure the adapter driver is up to date from here:
https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DWA-171

What mfr and model host wifi router is the adapter being connected too?

Is this seen with other wifi routers?
Connect it to a different PC or laptop to see if the problem follows.

Thanks for the reply,
I fixed it actually by disabling windows update in services.msc, in case anyone finds this later.
All I know is that it's a router from Telus.

I have the identical problem, also with a Telus Wifi router and DLink AC600...

Disabling Windows Updates does not fix this for me.. is there not a better way to remove this 3000 ms pause every minute?

I have sent a support request to DLink technical support in Canada and will report back if I get a resolution.
Now that I have trapped a few pauses with Procmon, I can state that my pauses are precisely 4000 ms, not 3000.
They start with:

2021-06-13 9:13:38.4159618 AM  DeviceIoControl\Device\MUP

And end with

2021-06-13 9:13:42.4129500 AM  DeviceIoControl\Device\MUP

There appears to be a timer involved... exactly every second, there is a DeviceIoControl\Device\MUP command, and every 60 seconds this leads to 4 seconds of download interruption.
Is this a Windows thing?  Or is the DLink driver triggering this?

Don't know...
If you can find the chip set mfr, Qualcomm, Realtek, Atheros...You could try to download chip set mfr drivers from them directly and see if you notice any differences. I know that Realtek and I believe Atheros have drivers for there chip sets. Not sure what model is in the 171 though. I know years ago someone posted using chipset drivers for I think the 131 or a older model DWA that worked vs using D-Links drivers. If you can see or find the model of the chipset, might be work testing to compare and let D-Link know. Maybe ask support what chipset this is using.

What Rev is your 171? A B or C?

Mine is Rev C.  Will give Dlink support a chance to respond... I am way out of my depth here.

I checked the driver, mine is actually newer (directly from DLink support).   1030.40.xxxx

For downloads, it does not really matter, but for Zoom meetings, a 4 sec pause every minute gets annoying..

You might try this while you wait on D-Link and see:

When I try to install the driver, Windows says that "it has determined that I already have the best driver installed" and does not allow me to proceed.
