Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Not sure about performance between DS and USB. I would presume that SD should be faster...

hello again
it's a 750Go drive NTFS format.
the strange thing is that on US dlink website there is no word about DLNA on dir-657.
but DLNA is everywhere on european dlink website.
So i flash the firmware with the 1.01 European firmware...

Still the same

i put "Olivier" as DLNA Server Name, but nothing is shown on every device :(

If you put some video files on the HDD and open Windows media player, does that application see the drive and it's contents?

You need to check to see if your media is DNLA supporting that your putting on the drive.

I'll have to load up my 657 and see how my boxee box does with it...

I mainly stream from drives attached to a dedicated online PC/Server here....

i share some Flac and avi files on the drive, everything was working fine before the dlink

on my ps3 and on my tv  i don't see any server as it used to be.

I think dir-657 is very poor with dlna, i buy it because it's a dlna certified device  :-\

IT should be working then, However I don't know of FLAC files are supported. AVI and MP4s are I believe. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask them to review your settings and configuration.

Also Not sure if that 750Gb drive will be supported either...500 is the max.

I'll put my 250Gb drive online this evening and run a quick test with my 657.

Ok, I ran a quick test with my 657 loaded with v1.02 build, an NTFS formatted 250Gb USB drive connected to the router and a Windows 7x64 PC connected to the router as well. Not seeing any media server devices or the connected drive in Networking Places nor in Windows Media Player.

I've forwarded this onto D-Link for review here in the U.S.A. I presume some information may be communicated to your side of the pond since this is effecting both sides however I don't know for sure. I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and tell them about this and refer to this thread as well.

Let us know if you find out anything. I'll do the same.

i think i found something which can be the problem with the "minidlna" server in dir-657

Set your media share directories. As the config file states, these are separated by multiple media_dir lines, and content is defined by a preceding A, V, or P. Keep in mind that Linux is a case-sensitive OS, so your directories MUST match your file structure exactly, or the files will not be found. My finished share section looks like:

media_dir=V,/mnt/share/Videos
media_dir=P,/mnt/share/Pictures
media_dir=A,/mnt/share/Music

**Important** a bug exists in the scanner used in minidlna. Enter any music libraries last, because they can cause the movies scanner to freeze.

Yesterday magicaly the name of the server appears on my dlna players, i start to listen music -> ok
restart the router -> no more dlna server

i called D-link France on Tueday, the guy on phone wasn't able to tell me if the DIR 657 was DLNA compatible, he call me back in the afternoon to tell me, if you want to have a media server you should buy a NAS, router DIR 657 is not design to share media, it's a router.
the guy was incredibly stupid.

So i hope a firmware update as soon as possible, and i will be please to test it !

Awesome info,

Where are you exactly configuring this config file? Does this work for Windows?

I would ask for a level 2 or 3 tech person next time and ensure you reference this thread and the main site information. Specs for this router is certified DLNA so any data passing thru it should work for DLNA. This router is spec'd for media sharing. It is one of D-Link first router to have this feature I believe other than the DIR-645.

I can't even get my USB drive to show up at all and I presume it should right now.

Keep us posted and think you for sharing your information...

i can not change this configuration file, i have to do it with an ssh access and i don't have one on the router.

I found the information on "minidlna" forum, it's the dnla server in the DIR-657, you can see it in the log.

i can see minidlna started in the log, but as nothing it showing up on dlna render, i assumed there is a problem in configuration file because it fit my problem.

Maybe someone from dlink can tell us if they can check this configuration file.

On my side i can access my HDD through the network share. Only dlna is not working
