Cannot connect USB printer thru SharePort utiltiy
« on: January 01, 2012, 02:41:52 PM »

Hello:

I have 2 workstations connecting to the DIR-657 and a USB printer DELL 1700 connecting to the USB port on the router.
The OS on the 2 workstations are as follows, connecting using the SharePort Plus utility:
Win 7 Pro (64bit) connecting wirelessly and finding the printer fine.
Win XP Pro (32bit) connecting Through a wired connection directly to one of the ports on the router.

The problem lies with the XP workstation, where it detects that the printer is available (even on refreshing), however the Auto Connect status appears 'Disabled'. So I selected the printer and clicked on Properties, Optional Settings tab, checked the 'Enable auto connect' and selected the option, 'Connect Automatically only for printing' and clicked on 'Configure'. It takes a while trying to connect and eventually displays a message : 'Checking if the device's driver is installed. Please install it if it is not already installed'.

I have downloaded the latest driver and had it installed, however SharePort Plus does not seem to think so. The message stays on forever and 'Cancel' is the only option you can pick. I can surf the net, from both computers without any issues and print fine from my Win 7 computer. Any ideas how to get Shareport Plus to detect the printer driver and enable auto connect to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks!

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Also post this question in the Windows Shareport in the main forum as well.

Thanks FurryNutz for the suggestions, I tried and am still experiencing the same issue. I checked for all devices connected on my router and can only see the 2 workstations. I cannot see the printer. Per your suggestion I even reserved the IP addresses of both the workstations, turned off my firewall and antivirus programs (Vipre Antivirus premium) upgraded the latest SharePort Utility software as well as the latest firmware ugrade v1.0.1 and still continue to experience the same. Can you please tell me where do I turn the settings on for ensuring devices are set to auto obtain an IP address, from within the Router settings?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and I will post the question in the windows shareport utility forum.

Just reserve the IP addresses for each pc on the router, then make sure each PCs networking properties are set for auto obtain on the PCs themselves. Then install the Shareport utility on each PC that you want to connect to the printer connected to the routers USB port.

Thanks FuzzyNutz, I did check on my XP workstation and the radio button 'Obtain and IP address automatically' is selected. Still had no luck with getting it to auto connect. Any other settings you can think of? :'(

Were getting some odd log enties when XP SP3 and Shareport are trying to connect to the pinter on the USB port. Some timeout and No response from SXUPTP entries are need while SP is connecting and fails to connect.

Windows 7 PC has connected to the printer and prints correctly.
This needs to be reviewed by Level 3 tech support and engineering if possible.
Recommeding that this customer call DLink ASAP.

I have this router and same FW version and will try to reproduce using an HP LaserJet printer with USB.

I cannot reproduce this issue using Windows XP Pro SP3, Mac OSX 10.6.8 connected to a HP LaserJet P2014n connected to the USB port on the 657 using Shareport v4.0.0 B2 SXUPTP driver v3.4.6.0.

Both Device found the printer added the printer and I was able to print a sample page from each device to the printer.

Possible Dell printer driver and SP issue here.
Keep us posted.
