Only 11g mode with WPA or WPA2 - no 11ng
« on: August 13, 2007, 01:38:02 PM »

I've had the 652 adapter for a while, but I finally just upgraded to the 655 router.  Now the problem I have is the only way I can get anything above an 11g (Rate =54) connection is if I disable WPA or WPA2 for my network.  I currently run using the "n and g only" mode on the router since I have a wireless G printer.  If I go to n-only on the router with WPA enabled, I cannot connect at all with the 652.  It sees the network, but it will not connect.  I also have 552 desktop adapters, and they work great in n-only or n and g only modes on the router.

Browsing other sites, I've only come across one other person with this problem, but he didn't have a solution yet either.  I'm running WinXP on my laptop and I've tried all versions of drivers that I can get my hands on.  Again, everything works great with my desktop 552s, it's only the 652 with the problem.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Jason

Give the 1.05 firmware a try, it's newer and seems pretty solid. As for the encryption,
If you have a G device connecting with WPA, the Draft N deivce will have to switch to WPA as well. You can not achieve N speeds with WPA. You will have to use WPA2.

I did, and firmware 1.05 gives me constant disconnects (see the DIR-655 thread).

this also happens with no encryption? do you have any 802.11G devices connected to the network?

I don't want any G devices on my network -- so if there are any I don't care about them.

How is turning off encryption supposed to let me know anything about the router's status?

If the router only works when encryption is turned off, then the router doesn't work.

He is the moderator and it looks like he is just trying to trouble shoot your problem. If you don't put all the details of your previous trouble shooting, you will find others wanting to help you ask for that very same information.

He may even ask what other SSIDs you see when your wireless client is checking out the world around you.

If you are using 1.05 you can switch it to N-only and get the same results.

(old post)
802.11N will NOT run at 300 unless you are using WPA2

Here are my Favorite settings with 1.02 FW

I have the same sort of problem. I cannot authenticate with my 655 when set to "N Only" unless I set WPA to AUTO.  The Network Magic SW indicates that it is a WPA2 Network, but I'm not sure how to confirm which mode its authenticating in.  It does act like its running at 300Mbs speed.

log into your router, and check your security under wireless settings. It will tell you there which type of security you are using.

Maybe this is obvious but if your running WinXP you have to apply the patch on the client machine for WPA2.  It is not included in SP2 or any automatic update since then.  This fixed my problems.
