Guest Access - Guest mode
« on: February 21, 2011, 01:56:10 PM »

Can someone reference me to relevant documentation for the DAP-2553 Guest Mode?

I have an SBS2008 server environment that is acting as the DHCP and DNS. I am trying to add the DAP-2553 to the network to provide internal wireless and wireless guest internet access. I have upgraded the firmware to 1.21 which now shows the Guest Mode under filters but it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

Hi,

I think the guest mode works when you enable multiple SSID's , but i think it still needs to be seprated by VLAN..

Should be just enable guest mode then input a PW for it. the Guest mode SSID should appear on the clients devices and it should be able to connect.

I recommend contacting your local D-Link support office for additional help.

Has anyone figured this out yet with detailed instructions?
It is not as simple as selecting Guest...

We are running a Comcast Business router as our DHCP, which in turn is connected to our main switch, a cisco sr216. We have a small office staff so we don't need anything fancy.

I have the DAP-2553 plugged into a DLink DSS 16+ switch in my office, do I have to plug the DAP into the Comcast gateway?

I would contact DLink support on this. Seems like you have some traffic items that need to be configured correctly on the DAP for clean access for guest and main clients.

Most configurations are as follows:
ISP Modem>Host router>networking switches>wired PCs and wired devices like DAP's.

Also review the user manual for the DAP. It should have some information on settings.

Thank you for the quick reply, I sent an email support question but no response yet.
I was hoping someone had the solution already.

I know it has something to do with setting up multiple VLANs and the settings there, but the manual is useless in that area.

I have tried a couple of things that I found on Dlinks support site and other forums/blogs and have factory reset the DAP twice because I locked myself out.

My network is configured as follows
ISP Modem/Gateway>Main switch>Switches in each office>DAP on one of the office switches

Seems like this set up should work.

One thing I would do on the DAP, won't put any passwords on the unit until you know you have it set up correctly.

What mode is this DAP working in, AP or bridge? I resume AP looking at the diagram of your set up.
If you connect the DAP directly to the main switch, does it work then? Might help to narrow down operation of the DAP from the switches.

no reply from Dlink Support as of yet,

The DAP is in AP mode.

I can connect on the Primary SSID and the SSID1 I created, but both have full access to the network. so for now I have them both passcoded

I found this here on the forums but the link in the last post is dead.

Just got off the phone with business class tech support.

It is not possible to create a secure wireless connection to the LAN with access to network resources and a separate SSID with internet only"guest" access with this device alone.

does anyone know of a device that would do this? maybe a business class wireless router?

Currently our Router is a SMC Comcast Business Gateway

Might check out the DSR series router. I would call DLink sales about this router with specific questions about this router series and if there is any other routers that can do this. Let us know what the say.

Thanks for the feedback.
