DWA-556 and DIR-655 connection speed
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:17:51 AM »

I read the sticky and am attempting to get the 300 mbps speed.  With the settings below, I log into the router and check the Wireless Status - I have between a 94-100% signal, but I'm only getting around 108mbps (occasionally it bumps up to 162mbps for a moment) rate.  Of course when I check the wireless status in Vista, it shows connected at 300 mbps, but the router status shows the true speed of 108.

What do I need to do to get a consistent 300 mbps rate?

Here are my specs:

DIR-655 Router
Latest Firmware
802.11 Mode : Mixed n and g mode
Transmission Rate : (Mbit/s) BEST
Channel Width : 20/40 Mhz
Authentication :WPA Personal
WPA Mode : WPA2 Only
Cipher Type : AES

DWA-556 PCI-e card
Firware version 1.30

Windows Vista 32

Where are you seeing the 108Mbps speed? Windows or D-Link utility?

The 108mbps speed is displayed in the web-based D-Link utility.

I.E., when I log into the router, I go to Status>Wireless and then it shows 108 in the Rate column of the Wireless Client list.

you're good then. The router is showing data rate, the windows is showing connection speed.

Okay, I'm going to show my ignorance - what is the difference between the speed and rate?  Are they essentially the same or not?  I.E., is the connection speed that Windows is showing the theoretical max, and the data rate shown in the router interface is the actual?

If so, how do I get that data rate up closer to 300?

Thanks for your help.

Connection speed is the "theoretical" capability of the connection.
The data rate is the actual transfer rate given environmental interferences and distance factors.
