DWA652 Horrible performance in "N" mode
« on: February 20, 2008, 07:26:47 PM »

I am trying to get a DWA652 to work in "N" mode to either a DIR-655 or a Belk F5D8233 "N" router.  When connecting to either router set in "G" mode, I get close to 20Mbps throughput.  When connecting in "N" mode to either router I only get between 2 and 5 Mbps.  I have two different DWA652 cards, one version A1 and another version A2.  They both do the same thing.  When connected in "N" mode they both show 300Mbps on the router and card status pages.  I am using WPA2 only, AES, 20/40.( yes I have read the FAQ)

If I connect using a NG WN511T wireless card,  i get throughput in the range of 60Mbps connected to either router.

I have tried both the D-link and Windows wireless config tools.  Same results both ways.  I have also tried both 130 and 120 versions of the DWA652 drivers.

Am I overlooking some setting on the DWA652 driver config?

Regards,
Karl

Have a 652 on XP A1 hardware, 1.30 drivers.  Connects with no issues and excellent speeds.  Not using the DLink Connection Manager.  I installed by pointing Device Manager to the drivers I did not use the setup program.  All settings on card are default.

That's nice.  Really doesn't do me much good though.  Anyone else have any ideas?

Davevt31 response to you is very good. It lets you know it can be done and the set-up he used to get it.

Now you can emulate those things as they related to the D-Link hardware so you can find out what the real problem or issue is.

Since it doesn't sound like placement, as the other brand card works, it might be related to drivers. If you are using Draft N 1.0 firmware on the routers and the DWA-652 is using Draft 2.0 drivers (or vis versa) you may get less than stellar performance.

I started off using the 1.30 drivers installed the exact same way.  I am connecting to a DIR-655 with version 1.11 firmware. (all latest available)

Davevt31 what router/firmware are you connecting to and what Mbps throughput rates do you get connecting at "N" and "G"?

Router is a Dlink 655 running the beta firmware from the top of this forum.  I have it set for N only.  Connection rate usually right around 270 or so when checked from the router menu pages.

What is your throughput rate, not the connection rate?  I get a connection rate of 300Mbps but the throughput is only in the 1-5 Mbps range.

What are you using to measure with?

Don't be fooled by windows copy box.
Can you post DXDIAG?

I'm not fooled by windows Copy.  I have done a bunch of different tests including back to back ftp copies to a DNS-323 and using ixia Qcheck throughput tests to another box.

Ftp tests copying 24MB file.
Test 1:  Wireless G-only WN511T 9.8 seconds
Test 2:  Wireless N-only WN511T 3.4 seconds
Test 3: 100BaseT  2.2 seconds
Test4: Wireless G-Only DWA-652 A2 9.3 seconds
Test5: Wireless N-Only DWA-652 A2 53 seconds

Ixia Qcheck throughput tests Data Size 1000KBytes
Test 1: Wireless N-Only DWA-652 A2 5 Mbps
Test 2: Wireless G-Only DWA-652 A2 20 Mbps
Test 3: 100BaseT 93Mbps
Test 4: Wireless G-Only WN511T 20 Mbps
Test 4: Wireless N-Only WN511T 62 Mbps

I tried to attach DXDIAG but got a directory not writeable error.

Well this is interesting.  I just reset my DIR-655 to factory defaults and manually reconfigured my settings.   Now I am getting 80Mbps from the DWA-652.  I had reset the router several times before and tried different firmware, but always reloaded my saved config.  Guess I'll manually config it from now on.

CHEERS!

I am glad that worked. I was stuck on Drivers or Firmware. I guess a good reconfig is your friend now. I'll suggest that next time.

Learn something new every day. I wonder what it was about the old config that was blowing the performance out?

Do you have the old config still, I'd like to look at it.

I was grabbing at straws when I decided to reset the router.  Been doing this stuff since the good old days of acoustic couplers so I've seen my share of strange things.  I haven't tried using my other router lately either.  Everything was still working correctly with the 655 as of last night.   I think my old file is still around.  I'll try to do a couple more tests tonight saving and restoring my current config and the old config to see if I can duplicate it again.

I backed up my DIR-655 good config and was able to duplicate the problem by restoring my old config.  Restoring my good config fixed it so this is not an issue directly related to save/restore, but rather some setting that is in the old config file.  I have tried attaching files to messages in the past, but get an error.  Can you fix my account to have write permission or provide me with an email address to send the bad config file to?   I also tried my Belkin "n" router last night but was unable to replicate the problem on it now.  I did a similar reset to factory defaults, but since it is not my primary, I don't have any config saves on it to be able to restore it's previous bad settings.  Really wish I had saved it at this point.
