Title: New 202l not recognizing usb hard drive
Post by: desktopj on June 21, 2016, 01:05:00 PM
Brand new unit. Updated FW twice. Reset to default twice.
Setup doesn't recognize brand new WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB. HD lights but no light on usb port on 202L. Setup never shows  HD in either usb port, never beeps when plugged in. Tried wizard setup and via IE Explorer.

HD checks out on other devices.

P.S. The is the second unit I've tried to get working. The first one's ethernet port was DOA and I returned it to the vendor.

Thanks

Does this USB drive have a external power adapter or just the USB cable that connects to the DNR or a PC?
Do you have the DNR powered off before connecting the USB drive then powering on the DNR?

v2.03.02 USA
Just a cable. I plugged in HD while powered per instructions.

New problem. Replaced usb 3 cable with usb 2. Horay, fouund HD. Started format, got to 4% and DNR started beeping and error popped up saying format failed. Ejected HD but it's light stayed lite so powered down DNR. Powered up DNR, started format again - same thing. Powered down DNR, plugged HD into laptop. HD trashed, even WD utilities can't erase/format it. Not happy.

Ok. You need to find a USB drive with a external power adapter. There may not be enough power on the DNR to power a external USB drive of this size. Usually 500Gb or less drives shouldn't be a problem. However 1Tb and bigger drives, they usually need external power adapters to help on the power. I presume this maybe the issue here. I have a 1Tb drive connected to my DNR for testing, it has a power adapter and works.

OK.
That should be something that's noted in the specs. Especially since they state a max of a usb 4 TB drive per port without any such restrictions mentioned.

Thanks,

Oh, and I did resurrect the drive. Went back to a usb 3 cable and Win10 was actually able to repair it. Who'd thought?

Glad you got the drive working. Ya, specs would have been nice. Alot of various USB drives and types out there.

Once you get a power adapter USB drive, should be ok on the DNR.

Just a quick note. Dug out an old usb external HD case powered  (vantec ) and a used 1 TB drive.  That formatted and works properly, as you suggested. Thanks

Interesting, I had no problems with the 3 TB ultra portable. Formatted to 2.7 TB with FAT 32 in the F/W.

I have a weeks worth of 2210L recording so far at 1920x1080 30fps on Excellent video quality.
