Title: dcs-2230, lack of options wich make this camera suck big time!!!
Post by: mobne on November 26, 2012, 07:21:17 AM
I have the 2230 with 1.1 firmware.

I think there is a lack of options in it?

Max filezise? Why does this exist at all? Should be up to the user how big files you want and not to the firmware. Limit with events now is 5mb and with recording 50mb in 1.1 firmware.

When the Sd card gets filled up. Is just stops recording. Why is there no option to make it overwrite the oldest files? Now i must manually format the camera time to time to precent the card from getting full.

Id also would like it to only make 1 long videofile for as long there is activity happening.
For an example, if i set it to trigger every 20s, it would be nice if it just kept on recording untill its no activity for 20s and then stop.

In regard to your experience with the Zavio camera, how is the latency like between video feed and reality on a wifi network?

I am thinking of getting on and putting it on a 10mb+ wifi, just not sure if the latency will be small enough for what I do

I also think it is a lack of options, see also my recent thread (motion detection and events deletion).
Delay between event is limited to 99 seconds. Why? In case some authorized guy comes and triggers events you can be flooded by events e-mails. A longer delay could permit to disable the event once you get the first trigger and check it e.g. by e-mail.
I also don't understand why events are limited to 3.
I understand we have 3 profiles, this is reasonable, but I could need more events, e.g. standard working day (so that events are not generated while you are at home), non working days (events on all the day when you are away) and for each of them I would like to define different notifications (e.g. e-mail sending and video recording on SD). Recording time is always the same e.g. 8:00 - 18:00 inside an event, so if you need different times for different days you have to manually change the event. With more events you could set separate events (e.g one for monday+wednesday, another for other days) and enable / disable them, may be with a flag directly in the window where all events are listed (i.e. without the need to enter the event for enabling/disabling it).
Dreaming of an impossible firmware? I don't think so...

By the way, is there a way to submit these issues to D-Link? Which is the best channel to do this?

Maybe anymore more events, the camera can not handle it.

Maybe, the memory card, is already full with the f/w and there is no more space to add these features without a redesign of the hardware.

This is a 2 MP HD cam, not an SVGA.

Anyways, you get what you pay for.

You could have more events and just limit the number of active events.
In 2013 I also expect you can delete a directory. If you have lets say triggers for 12 hours in a day, in a week you have to manually delete 84 things. As you have to move up and down in each day and in each hour of each day, this makes literally hundreds of actions!
If you ever took a look at the setup file you would have seen there are many options not available via the user interface, I suppose many options are there but are not implemented in the F/W, but as a firmware writer I can assure that with few lost KB we could have, for example, what I ask.

Well, then download the source code and play around with it.

Anyways, Dlink is pathetic. they only have 1.00 F/W for d/l
