Wireless device recommendation
« on: February 09, 2013, 06:30:22 PM »

Hi,

My problem is accessing a public router.

I have had no success using free firewalls and paid versions so I thought to find a router like device that would solve my problems of dropped connections and security concerns.

Because my laptop has a Wireless G adapter that is located 65 feet away from the main router (and have been told that it is at its maximum reach) I suffer from random dropped connections and a weak signal strength. Living in the suburbs probably does not help much with so many houses around and so many networks and wireless devices running all the time.

I am looking for a wireless solution that will bridge/access/repeater (have been told these 3 types provide the same function) to the main router and be able to create a new network with its own private password and firewall. I definitely need all listed requirements and the ability to configure which computers can access the wired ports would be nice as well. The ability to use it as a main router for future applications would be nice as well.

I called the DLink Customer support and was recommended models DAP 1525 and 1522 but because of the phone cutting out I could not understand them when trying to gather more information.

Is there a reason why Canadian box stores do not sell either of these devices? Are they new to the market or are they old and have already been released and discontinued?

Is there ANY device or devices that will do this without involving wires or a powerline soluction?

Ya 65 feet is quite a stretch for distance. You need something between you and the main host router that will help you boost the signal, One of those models mentioned should help greatly.

Here is a list of whats available on the Canadian web site and all seem to be available at various e-tailors there:

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for that link Fluffy.

Now that I know of the technical terminology where:

The Wireless ISP (WISP) mode is a combination of the Bridge and Gateway modes, in which the router still relies on the main gateway to provide access to the internet, but it retains use of the built-in firewall and DHCP services. This is ideal for when you want to limit or control access to the LAN or internet for an individual subset of users.

So are you wanting a DAP that does WISP?

Hmm, there's alot of options. Whats your price point? Im just going to talk about Dlink options here, but explore the arena.

Off the top of my head there is the DAP-2360 . And on the lower price range maybe the DAP-2310. Or if you want to drool... the DAP-3690.

Thank you Fluffy for bringing the DAP abbreviation to my attention. I have no idea what it stands for. I looked it up on Google to find nothing related but I am gonna take a guess. Does it stand for Direct Access Point?

I am looking for a WISP that will provide a wireless solution tol bridge/access/repeater (have been told these 3 types provide the same function) to the main router and be able to create a new network with its own private password and firewall. I definitely need all listed requirements and the ability to configure which computers can access the wired ports would be nice as well. The ability to use it as a main router for future applications would be nice as well.

I can see that over the three weeks I have been searching for a device that now a big box store sells the DAP-1525 and am guessing that because Canada is a little behind the US in having the new technology released in retail that eventually we will get more selection to WISP type router devices without having to go to an online store.

My budget for this device would probably be around the $200 CAD if it can do what I need it to do easily and consistently with no problems and yes the DAP-3690 would be out of my price range. And I can see that the DAP 1160 and DAP 1360 could be in my price range but I would want something with todays dual band technology with all the other stuff that todays router technology has to offer without having to put a lean on my vehicle.

That DAP-2310 would not be of interest as it only has one ethernet jack at the back.

As to what of the two types of WISP selection settings I would want to use is a mystery. In the manual it lists WISP Repeater Mode and WISP Client Router Mode.

DAP is just a model designation for DLink model APs, i.e. Access Points.

There are some models that don't support WISP and some do. I think the 1360 or 1522 does. I think maybe the DIR-505 or 506L may do WISP as well. I would contact DLink sale or support to ask specifically which one does.

If your looking for dual band support, the DAP-1533, 1525 and 1522 all handle that.

Some light reading:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)

It is good reading material however you may want to update it as last I spoke with a DLink Rep the models DAP-1522 and DAP-1525 both support wireless connectivity to the main router when used as a bridge and does not need to connect to the main router using a wired connection only.

That is the only typo that I can see.

I await DLink customer support to contact me as to what device is needed for the application described...

Is a WISP the same as a client router or client bridge when shopping for a device to meet my needs?

I believe is a feature of a client bridge or AP.
