Dir-890l Wireless Speed
« on: August 02, 2019, 08:19:33 AM »

Recently, the wifi output speed has dropped significantly on this unit.  The hard wired speed from the unit tests at 300mbps.  However, the wireless connection speed never gets above 50mbps whereas before it would test as high as 180mbps.  I have reset the device to no avail.  What am I missing or is it time to get a new router?  Thoughts?

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What wireless devices do you have?
Happens with all wifi devices?
Has any software or FW updates been recently performed on any of these devices?

Is Smart Connect enabled on the router? Try disabling SC and set manual channels and SSIDs.

Wow!!!
I thought I was going crazy!!!

Exactly the SAME thing is happening here.  Have this rooter for +3 years now and suddendly, download speed in the house went from 100 MB to 30MB and even 2 MB!

Rebooted
Resetted
Swtiched Smart-mode off/on
Changed many variable
NOTHING worked yet.

The only thing I didn't do is upgrading the firmware as I keep telling myself it was working 2 weeks ago and I didn't change/moved/Added anything in the house!

Is this wired as well?

What happens if you re-load same version of FW. Try most current version as well.

ISP is Videotron (cable)
Wired to my PC

Tried reloading factory default and also updated to 1.20.... still all the same… :(

What's weird is that the upload is fine.  Can upload to the same speed all around the house same speed as wired PC… it's only the Download speed that decreased suddenly...

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Is IPv6 set for Local Only on the router? Or Automatic?
Saw an issue years ago with D-Link routers not working well with IPv6 enabled on Videotron ISP. Should be an issue now however anything is possible.
Odd that the upload isn't effected while the DL is.  :-\

I am experiencing the same problem. on a 100/100 fiber connection
download varies on wifi but mostly 8mpbs or 50mbps, but upload is usually fine but also expericing problems.
cabled speeds are fine so far.

DIR-890L    HW:A1    FW:1.21
it is connected  directly to the ISP's fiber ONT, so the 890L is the router.
the router is set to reboot every monday

our ISP doesn't support IPv6 yet, but it is set to automatic in the settings.

but maybe its the 1.21 firmware?  but the others say they're expoerincing the same problem at lower versions but with another hw revision. soo..

Set IPv6 to Local Only.

Is Smart connect enabled? Try disabling Smart Connect and check.

What devices are you using for speed testing?
Do wired PC speed tests have good results?

The router shouldn't need any rebooting. Mine never has.

Hi,

I had the similar problem before. I think I have fixed it.

The problem was at the ISP modem/router (Bell Home HUB 1000) combo which was not property put into bridge mode.

Now I got 500/500 at all the ethernet ports throughout the house.

I have 53 devices connected onto the network. 28 on ethernet.

Having a modem combo unit that's not bridge can effect speeds. Glad you were able to get it working right.

Hi

Before I managed to put the modem combo into bridge mode properly. I was getting upload/download in the range of 200 to 300M.

It is not possible to connect the WAN cable directly to the DIR890L router and use pppo setting. It will not work. The connection must go through the modem combo.

Previously, I have pppo enable on the modem combo, DHCP disable, pppo  and DHCP are enable on DIR890L.

In this configuration, I got 500/500 on modem combo LAN port, but only 300+M on the DIR890L LAN port.

It was like two pppo running on single connection.

After I put the modem into bridge mode, at the DIR890L LAN port, I got full 500/500 M speed.

Link on how to put your bell home hub into bridge mode.

https://emak.tech/support/bell-home-hub-1000-bridge-mode/

FW:1.20
HW: A1

Somehow the DIR-890L QoS Engine is not able to detect speed. I think it is the FW problem.
I used the same MacBook and speediest.net to test all the ethernet pot on the network.
