DCS-930l Wireless Signal Improvement
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:43:58 PM »

I purchased 2 DCS-930L cameras and was disappointed the wireless range wasn't better.

I took one camera apart, located the internal antenna, then soldered in a 3db omni antenna (drilled the plastic case to run the coax through).  My signal strength went from 29% to 100%.

I then took the camera and set it up in my backyard (about 80' from the in-house router) and am getting 55% signal strength.  Have it hooked to a solar-panel pack.

Will do this to the 2nd camera, once I purchase another external antenna.

Hope this helps.

I concur with that request. The mod procedure would make an interesting thread.

Try this fix of mine posted in another thread...
I've had the same problem with one camera and a weak modem/router combo...
My fix which works so well that I can even put a camera in the garage if I wanted to....was to plug in the LAN wire that comes with every camera and use only once to "sync" the camera with the router....and use it as an "antenna" of sort to extend the range...."It Works"

"My signal strength went from 29% to 100%. "

How the heck do you measure signal strength on these cams?

None of the ones I own, report it from what I can tell (5222l, 2230, 2132l)...  I doubt the 930L does.

He may be using his router to gauge signal strength. For example, the web UI for the D-Link DIR series routers present the signal strength of connected devices:  Web UI: Status > Wireless

I think it will work for sure. Was there any improvement? Share your experience.

Advanced settings -> Settings -> Wireless Setup -> Click on Site Survey

Just found it on my 930L and 932L

Related note, I am running all 3 of my cameras at 100% strength, would i gain better picture in low light by running wired? I am already planning on hacking the board with the capacitors.

Just modded my antenna as well, replaced the internal with an external one from my an old router.
Previously I was dropping frames and now the signal is solid, the signal strength went from 50 to 76 based on what the camera is telling me. It would likely work better had I not spliced the two coax connections but it's working good enough I won't bother replacing it with a single coax run. Also picked up a extra few percent by adjusting the antenna angle, might get a bit more but haven't tried all the directions yet.

I'm also was unsatisfied by wireless signal strength, and because of this i decided to add an external antenna to 930L. Now i'm very glad to see almost 100% strength of signal instead of 20-30%! Here's my modded camera (click to enlarge):

Looks good - what's the lens? Angle of view? Is it sharper focus than stock?

This cam is installed in small hall, so i decided to use fisheye lens to maximize the viewing angle (near 180 degrees for this  type of lens). Stock lens are not removed, i'm just installed the attachable magnetic lens for cellphone's camera (there's a lots of lens on ebay and aliexpress for cheap prices) in top of it.
