Can't get internet through the router
« on: September 08, 2010, 04:17:12 PM »

Hi, I just purchased this router and am having a problem getting it to read the internet. I am having to plug the DSL modem straight into the PC to get the internet just to post on this forum.

It seems like my router is reading that the DLS modem is connected to the router, but then not letting it establish the connection to the internet

I am getting the following message under device status:

"The addressing of the internet side learnt thru DHCP conflicts with the addressing selected f or the LAN side"

I'm not sure what that means or what my problem is and thought one of you all might know what to do or what my problem is.

Assigns my pc the ip address  192.160.0.199 (Under the devise status still

additional info:  Firmware 1.21NA  and hardware version A2

Under device info "Wired" its says  ip address 192.168.0.1

any input would be appreciated

I would have your ISP help you set up the DSL Modem as it seems your modem has it's own router and becomes redundent and introduces a dual NAT issue and may cause some internet connection issues. Have the ISP help you bridge the dsl modem to the 4500. You'll probably be entering in PPPoE information in to the 4500. Your ISP will help you. You'll be using the Basic/Internet/manual section of the 4500. Let us know how it goes.

LOL ok let us know how it goes. I know it will probably fix your issue. Review the gaming and gamefuel sticky for other information.

Its a car boat...not such a great car, nor a great boat. Modem/routers are the same way, try to stay away from them if you can. The Fuzz is right though, disable the DHCP server inside the modem/router, the issue is the modem/router is giving the Dlink router a IP that it itself is trying to give to computers connecting to it. You could work around it, but disabling the router part in the modem will give you much better performance and dependability. Good luck.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. However, I decided that I will send the router back, a little to complicated for me. Thanks again

I'm going to try one last step if you all think it might work and this might be my only problem. My old router used the ip address 192.168.1.1, the dlink uses 192.168.0.1 (which is the exact same ip address my dsl modem uses) Will switching the dlink ip to 192.168.1.1 fix this issue im having trying to connect to the internet.

I tried contacting my isp and they said the modem would not work with there service if bridged it (don't know why they just said it wouldn't talked to 3 different people there too)

My only other option imo, would be to changed the ip address example:

Modem: ip address 192.168.0.1
Router (New ip address once I change it) 192.168.1.1  (this could work, however one of you all might know right away if that will work or not)

Thanks again for you alls time and help.

I was thinking that the dlink used 192.168.1.1 as the primary ip address for their routers, so this may be the issue I was having and maybe not, we will see I guess

Thats a shame, What ISP service name is the DSL ? What brand name and model is on the DSL Modem? Just curious. Never heard of DSL Service not supporting the Bridged mode. So, all it is, It's PPPoE account information that could be setup on the 4500 and there is an RFC bridge mode that needs to be enabled on the DSL modem. This effectively turns off the router on the DSL modem and makes it act just as a modem and passes the data and PPPoE to the 4500, then the 4500 will do the rest. Sounds like the ISP marketing is wanting to market there HW and not help there customers use other HW. My 2 cents.

Yes you can change the IP address if you like on the LAN side of the 4500. The WAN or internet port side of the 4500 gets it IP address from the modems they are connected too. The 192.168 does not have to use used either. I've set mine to my house address, which start at 6.0.#.#. Gets it out of th 192.168 range, possible conficts like your seeing and easier to manage and remember.

If your ISP is unwilling to help you bridge the DSL modem or if in fact the modem can't be with there service then you are probably right to return the 4500 as it's features for you and the dsl modem could be incompatible. Sucks to say. I really like this router for gaming and movies.

It's the local phone company (I'm from a small town and that is the only option or I would have something else). Yeah, I'm just going to return the Router and try other things to help with my gaming with the old router. Maybe I'll just end up running a cat5 cable straight to the  system and see if that helps.

Just trying to get my connection a bit better playing Modern Warfare 2 on PS3 and I normally have 3 bars (light green) out of 4 possible (Dark Green) max and sometimes dip into 2 bars (yellow), but hardly ever.

Our internet speed is just 3.0 mbps (pretty much max you can get atm from the provider without paying way to much) Maybe I can take the advice from some other post and set up a static ip address for the ps3 still and open the ports and see if that works. Was kinda excited about the gamefuel stuff, if my wife gets on the net while im playing i start lagging really bad and she gets offline b/c of it (she was excited too so she could still surf while I played)

Oh well, thanks for your help.

I emailed dlink customer service to see what they say, if they say the same thing you guys do, about bridging the modem, i'll just run off a copy of what needs to be done and take it to the dsl provider. I'm thinking they just don't know what to do and I'm getting the run around.  It's a Westell 6100 modem (One of the employees gave me direction to bridge the modem, but another employ and a senior employ said they wouldn't work in bridge mode)

I haven't been on here in forever.  However, this caught my eye. :)

ALL DSL modems are capable of bridging, unless they developed a certain firmware which disables these functions.  Which I HIGHLY doubt.  And it can easily be done from the users end.

Can you please post a screenshot of the config screen?  That'll kinda determine how you can set it up.

Good news and maybe bad news.

Good news is, I changed my routers ip address so that it wasnt the same as the modem and now I can get online through the new modem.

Possible bad news: is that the correct way to do it, to utilize this router fully?

If you are like me, and you believe that the DGL-4500 should be the only router, then the next step would be to put the Westell into bridge mode.  So it ONLY acts like a modem.

I'm fairly new to setting up a semi high tech router like this (old cheap netgear before this one) Does it significantly decrease performance or what does having the router in the modem do?
