Title: Looking for install wizard/ installation help. (lost install CD)
Post by: metalmouse on February 27, 2010, 10:46:40 AM
Hello, I don't exactly have a troubleshooting issue, I just need to find a way to run the setup wizard or install the router without the cd. I got this router from a friend without the install cd.

Not sure what information would be best and most prudent, but here goes:

I'm running windows 7 64-bit on my Toshiba Satellite L505D.
Just to clarify, I have the Dlink DIR-655 router.
I've got a cable connection.

Ideally, I'd like to find a way to run the install wizard, but could possibly do manual install if I could find a good set of instructions on a forum somewhere.

I don't have a lot of experience with routers, but am very familiar with other aspects of windows, installations, ip addresses, etc.

Thanks for the help.

*update* see below post for current situation. Thanks.

I think this is the setup program thats on the CD:

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/RouterSetup_dir655_410.exe (http://ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/RouterSetup_dir655_410.exe)

Haven't used it so don't kill me if I'm wrong  ;D

The Manuals can be found here:

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Manual/ (http://ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Manual/)

Thanks! I'll give that a try.

*edit*

That program seemed to work, but I am unable to complete the final configuration process within it. It keeps popping up with "Error 302: Internal Error"

I looked this up, and some solutions have been to manually set up the router from the router web configuration page. (192.168.0.1) Upon visiting this page I am prompted to enter a password for the router, which should either be "admin" or " " (nothing, as it says on the bottom of the router), but neither work.

I am about to go through the router set up again from square one, but I'm not sure if this will reset it to factory defaults.

Any ideas?

The default login is UserName Admin with no password, make sure you click the Log In button not just hit ENTER.

You can use a paperclip or pin to press the button on the back of the router and this will reset it also.

Never much been a fan of router setup programs....  Much prefer to set them up myself....but thats me...

Keep in mind that you should, from my experience, set the router up with no internet connection initially.  If you have DSL, you should verify with your ISP what its default IP settings are so you can anticipate possible DHCP conflicts.....this is not an issue with cable modems fromw hat I have seen.

Most DSL modems down here in SouthFL use the 192.168.1.XXX DHCP range, so having the default DLink of 192.168.0.XXX is no problem....or rather, should not be a problem....

CD?? Don't know what the CD is for. I just bought one to replace my Linksys WRT54GS. I have the CD, but never use the CD to setup the router. Why do you need a CD ???

Some people are more comfortable running through the wizard to setup their router than doing it manually.

Some people are more comfortable running through the wizard to setup their router than doing it manually.

What I did was: access 192.168.0.1, and then click on the Internet Connection Setup Wizard, and then just follow the steps to complete. Click on the Wireless Network setup Wizard for wireless.

I didn't know the CD could help to setup the router. It is good to know. Thanks.
